Tried a refurb? Your budget will go a long way, and server hardware can have a pretty insane lifespan especially if you're not that core-count dependant. You'll be able to load up on storage!

I tried putting one of my characters in SIMS 7 into a room with no doors or windows, but I got in trouble. What kind of game is that?

Really not sure. I believe that the DB hosting infrastructure is a bit more 'true' cloud, with the RDP session hosts being more old school. How much we can actually tell though, I'm not sure - and which is the actual bottleneck?

They can, but that wouldn’t be at zero extra cost.

'Floating' ground. So the earth potential in that building, for whatever reason, isn't the same as in the building you've run an earth cable from. So, there's a potential difference between the earths, and current can then flow. If you touch the earth cable you may get a shock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_ground This does apply to network cabling as it may be shielded.

I've just retired my first batch of Crucial M4s that I bought in 2012 (every PC bought since then had an SSD fitted). They were 64GB, and actually worked out okay once we got rid of Windows 7 (which was a monster space hog by the end). Failure rate of those in 11 years - 3 out of 120, and all of those were early on.

Do Exam Boards not provide software for exams anymore?

Pearson PoP SecureAssess LIBF e-test I greatly dislike them all, and still have to suffer them on and off. We have a VM that hosts them. -
My Crucial M4 128GB, one of the first SSDs we had here: 61328 hours Still at 95% health.

We use Class Charts to do this. Usage of SIMS itself is pretty limited now, which is just as well as we use Connected and I’d have been dismembered by now otherwise.

Kiosk Mode Survey - iPad or other touchscreen tablet
3s-gtech replied to lmgtfy's topic in How do you do....it?
I can give you some components that I think will help, like a page refresh timeout (in case it's left half completed) and a basic form. I don't have a complete page to give you without building it from scratch which would probably be heavily critiqued for being crap! Start by having a table available in your favoured database (like MySQL). You'll need PHP running too. Then use a framework like Bootstrap so that you don't have to build the styles yourself.. -
Kiosk Mode Survey - iPad or other touchscreen tablet
3s-gtech replied to lmgtfy's topic in How do you do....it?
Are you thinking of writing and hosting the survey software? Pretty simple bit of code if you have the resources. We have similar built in house across the site for other purposes - mix of touchscreen monitors into mini PCs, Microsoft Surface/Surface Go, little mini tablet PC. The forms are based on an on-site IIS. -
Training - whether gym, track or just out and about, keeping fit. Does my mental health even more good. Fixing and making things - no end of broken stuff (not PCs!) to work on, mostly cars. Not as relaxing, but very satisfying.

I should mention another factor with ours - we upgraded to modern CCTV and were able to use our old 1Gb infrastructure (mix of OM1, OM3 and some OM4 fibre, old Cisco SG300 PoE switches and our lovely 5406zl2) to run it completely independently of the main network. I think we had to run one new fibre in total. Had a major bearing on the project cost, which we could offset against the new switches. The advantages of having multiple fibre pairs to cabinets! We also found that for short runs, the OM1 does indeed support 10Gb with acceptable SNR.

The IPC and clock speed improvements we’ve seen over the last few generations have certainly moved things on from the stagnation of 2nd-6th gen Core. Driven by AMD more than Intel whose tick-tock strategy became tick-tick-tick… We have a number of recent i3 machines (11th and 12th gen) that are plenty good enough for our needs. Most demanding thing we use is Premier Rush and Animate. Whether they’ll last 7+ years is another matter, but we tend to demote them to less demanding areas as they age.

We went to 10Gb backbone throughout in 2020, 1GB to desktop. 1Gb WAN in 2022. For most things, we don’t notice the backbone improvement. We would when imaging, if my MDT server was also on 10Gb but it’s not. The WAN connection was another matter, as we were throttling 100Mb constantly even with traffic management. We are still a very much on-site services setup, but I needed to remove the bottlenecks before any movement on that.

Allowing site/port through smoothwall
3s-gtech replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Check that you can access the site correctly without going through Smoothwall. If it’s not working, you’ll get the 504. -

Give over; you're still a young, dynamic rebel what with your TokTiks and whatnot. -
That is significantly more advanced than the system we've just replaced And yes, VLC is like a multi-tool, except it'd be one made by Snap-On and Milwaukee and every part of it would be the best version of that tool available.

You big nerds Good to see you make up your network cables with boots on.
-
If the 3rd gen will do what you need, then I usually recommend them as they're simple and cheap. They're very old now so check compatibility if you happen to need other functionality but Airplay works fine with up-to-date iOS and MacOS. That enclosure is natty.
-
You shouldn't need the remote. If you try to connect via Airplay it should wake up the Apple TV and present the code screen.
-
Apple TV plugged into the screen's HDMI? Won't disrupt the wifi connection. Cheap too. You'll need to make sure it's in a weatherproof container of course.
-
Still IIS here. Does what I need, but obviously if you're trying to reduce server footprint onsite it's not the best solution.

There are Powershell scripts that you can run that will remove certain apps for all users. That’s the only way I know of doing it post-image - it’s a good system though and you can push it via GP.
