  1. Do you need to do this with fat images? I ditched fat when I went to MDT back in 2020, and have never missed it. Don't get me wrong, thin is sometimes slow - but being able to update images in modules is awesome. My task sequences just get a new WIM in them when one comes out.
  2. Our two old Dell server based Smoothies went like this when the iDRACs died (they were screaming, being a 1U server). Very unlikely that's broken on a new one, but it's possible that it has lost some settings and is running flat-out as a fail safe.
  3. Kids don’t want to stand out, especially for something that’s not cool. They’ll get a nickname like ‘shoeshine’ that will stick. Smart yes, but within reasonable bounds of uniform standards - school is not the military.
  4. We got fleeced into doing that in the police. Pointless waste of time, makes you look like a dork. Don’t make your kids look like dorks.
  5. So I sign in on the phone browser, get a notification at the top from Microsoft Authenticator, approve it, and absolutely nothing happens in the browser. Sometimes works if I try multiple times.
  6. Ideal use case. They really need a Device Management License to tie them to your Google Workspace, where you can then set the device restrictions and policies, then they just kind of work.
  7. Entra Admin Centre. Protection Authentication methods Registration campaign Disable I'm not sure how effective this will be at stopping them from turning off SMS, which simply isn't an option yet. My experience with Authenticator is awful - it just doesn't work in iPhone.
  8. If you can do it as a new server (spin up a VM, install SQL 2019, disable connections to old DB, copy DB over and attach it with the proper routines, test connection to it) then go for it. This would need to be done out of hours, with the backup of being able to switch back to the old server if it goes wrong! I did similar using Hyper-V snapshots to upgrade the existing server (which is obviously much easier!) which seemed a bit risky but it worked perfectly when I rolled back.
  9. My brother’s engineering workshop was all Makita, but he was struggling with certain tools lasting any time with that level of use. He switched to DeWalt with good results, though still has a Makita impact wrench. In his line of work the Ryobi stuff wouldn’t last. You may watch MCM on Youtube - they’re sponsored by Ryobi but do have to frequently replace their harder working gear.
  10. (Microsoft) Office 365 is still the branding of the subscription-licensed productivity suite - Office 2019, Office 2021, Office 365. It was more confusing when that was shared with the online services infrastructure, now just Microsoft 365.
  11. Yeah, thousands of licenses. I could script the licenses being revoked but haven't needed to yet - if you do that there is a risk that any online services like OnDrive will be emptied/deleted.
  12. I recently went for Ryobi One+ for a strimmer ('brush cutter'). It's okay. With something like a mower, you'll need the higher capacity batteries to make it worthwhile - I paired mine with a 5.0Ah battery and a fast charger which added a lot of cost. The smaller batteries are ideal for smaller power tools though. Ryobi are very much a mid brand. Milwaukee and DeWalt are far ahead, and Stihl make some very decent electric chainsaws etc. Where Ryobi are ahead is choice and variety of tools.
  13. ^This. Our leavers accounts stay inactive and disabled, when they (often) come back Salamander just reactivates them.
  14. It's the same engine basically. I just tell people Edge is Chrome (for most purposes) which seems to satisfy them. They won't have updated these specs since Edge moved over from the EdgeHTML engine.
  15. You can't do that directly - it's a quagmire of e-waste dumping and I think ethically is a bit messed up nowadays ("what do we do with this useless old junk?" "Give it to Africa!") You may be able to work with a charity to facilitate donations, depending on the spec. Or a WEEE compliant recycler if they're as ancient as ours are. Whatever you do, you want those WEEE certificates.

  17. Air flow will work, if you can drastically improve it. AC should be unnecessary unless it's in a very warm space otherwise (near boilers/water tanks/sweaty teenagers). Can you vent it to outside (high in the space), with a large vent low in the door to draw in cool(ish) internal air? I have a similar switch cabinet with three big PoE switches in it. I drilled holes in the plastic front door, which allows me to keep it secure but vent much better.
  18. Probably, not sure with our LEA. Two years left anyway.
  19. One of my least favourite things of all is that people still come to me when it messes the bed. When we hosted it, I could do something about it (or moan to our data manager about running a routine!) Now, I say there’s nothing I can do (other than email support) and you can see the irritation this causes. Great - I love being made to look useless. We could build a better MIS ourselves. We almost did.
  20. It has been canine excrement since the start of term. Slow, crashy and frustrating. At least we have plug-ins for lesson registers etc.
  21. I have a database that feeds a page on our intranet, a list on our homepage for students, then a public list for parents. Staff can add and remove their clubs from this list. Written in PHP and MySQL. You may be able to achieve this with a Google site and form though.
  22. You have no power here! *ribbit*
  23. Do you have one of those neck rewinding tools? Theirs sounds like it’s on full extension, which is perilous in a new job.
  24. Mixed day. Some staggering lack of preparation, despite CPD day last week, but some things went well. Tomorrow is year 12 induction and that’s always busy. Someone managed to break our new copier, and I touched it last when the part fell off. New one for the engineer, hadn’t seen that snap off before!
  25. £6 per device or thereabouts.
