Ah, thought you meant firewall appliance. Windows firewall is fine there, it's essentially working internally as you have a VPN.

As you've found, you either need to set a reservation in DHCP, or potentially a network location profile in MacOS (which can use a config selected by the user from a list) - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202480 together with a static. It sounds like putting Windows on his Mac would be the best solution, though if it’s M1 that puts limits on the OS abilities of Windows as it’s not full featured. Your current setup is too techie for the Head though, IMO. Can be fixed. Edit: don't put RDP itself through your firewall as a protocol. Even a web gateway is a risk, though reduced.

Do you have snapshots or similar turned on?

We ditched generic accounts - if supply are in, we get a named account set up for them. From a safeguarding, traceability and DP viewpoint it just seemed like a better idea. It also stops other staff abusing those accounts to log students onto a staff PC (“they needed to get on Youtube!”) Does’t take too long to make an account for them, but some advanced notice helps!

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/231953-sims-connected-viable-option-now.html Short answer - no. Stick with what you have if you must keep SIMS.

Some .exe work fine (like VLC) where they have decent switches. Some are downright obtuse. You can always install with script or GPO post-deployment, though of course it's best to get the thin image as comprehensive and flexible as possible to save some time.

Just hit this issue and just tried it - so far so good - 60 seconds of pinging has got the task sequence working!

for /f "tokens=1-4 delims=/ " %%f in ('date /t') do ( set dd=%%f set mm=%%g set yyyy=%%h ) "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\CommandReporter.exe" /USER:username /PASSWORD:password /SERVERNAME:simsconnectedIP /DATABASENAME:schoolnameDFEnumber /REPORT:"SIMS_report_name" /PARAMS:"Detention DateDateDate %yyyy%-%mm%-%dd%T01:00:00?" /OUTPUT:"\\servername\outputfolder\report.xml" Should have included my current date code first time!

/PARAMS:"Detention DateDateDate %yyyy%-%mm%-%dd%T01:00:00?" Here's a pull from the batch file that runs one of my reports. Does this help? The Parameter id is an unknown - I'm not sure how you get that out.

I’d heard of the others, that one got me! It’ll be always on my mind from now on.

Where’s that Superman and the joke GIF?

I *think* the design is a lot more standalone from your current infrastructure than you’d think - these are a datacentre in a box rather than a server rack. That also means that installation isn’t just plugging in a box! The connection to a network could well require orders of magnitude better than what you have, and it’s not just sticking it on a VLAN. It does make a lot of sense in heat terms though - all heat coming from a computer is waste so why not use it? I wonder if they’d work in warm-air heating applications too?

ChromeOS may be a great solution for you - especially with a small investment in management licenses for each machine. Massively cheaper than properly MS licensing them.

Mine are on Windows 10 still ,but just have autoadminlogon set in the registry with a local user, then Xibo set in the Startup items. This has been basically foolproof for something like 15 years here, but I have frozen the Xibo version as 1.7 does everything I want.

Don’t worry about caddies in desktops. SATA SSDs weigh so little they’ll happily sit shoved somewhere in the drive bay (or stick one screw in if you must). See if 2x4GB is cheaper than 1x8GB - the extra to 10GB won’t make any difference in reality.
-
Ah, it's new. Then no you shouldn't need to do that! Are you using the Dell install media? This manages the OS install - seems that you can have issues if you just slap in an install disc.

Can you bang an old PCI-E graphics card in, see if that works? Sometimes needs a riser, but usually not.

Adding another SATA drive hangs the whole computer ?

Yes, I’ve had this. The disk is dead. You may be able to access the contents by changing the disk controller (for one that is exactly them same, including firmware!) It’s one of those situations where your backups are what saves you. -
M365 and G Suite can co-exist really nicely, but it takes time and a lot of tweaking to get it all to a place where you're really happy with it all (and familiar with it). It took me years of slowly adding integration and automation - our Google stuff auths via M365 but even then it was weeks of work tweaking the Google admin side, especially to support Chromebooks. The Microsoft side is managed with Salamander here (so there's a cost), as well as my own scripting, Powershell tweaks and managing AADC (plus legacy Exchange server onsite). I'm very pleased with the result, but I had the massive benefit of doing all this because it 'seemed like a good idea', rather than being driven by anyone else, with no time limit or pressure. That saved me some stress when we went into lockdown, by huge coincidence!

GDPR or Data Protection Act?
3s-gtech replied to Gongalong's topic in Data Protection & Information Handling
Yes, DPA. GDPR was adopted into UK law as the Data Protection Act 2018. Either is correct to an extent, but DPA is more so. -
'User Profile Sign on Service failed the sign in'
3s-gtech replied to mahmad's topic in Windows Server 2012
Can you access the share where the profiles are stored from a client PC? Roaming profiles are one of the more complex fields for this - but unlike a single mandatory profile, you can at least be fairly sure that you have a single point of failure here - the network location is offline, or the share permissions have been changed etc. Unlikely that every user's profile itself has been damaged. -

What type of profiles? This tends to happen if the user profile can't be accessed - e.g. a roaming profile share is offline or a mandatory profile has the wrong permissions. -
Looks like - the code tags stop ‘smart’ formatting. I think you have ye olde backtick and apostrophe together.
