Enabling this limits a profile size to half the RAM capacity of the device being used. So 2GB on a 4GB machine 4GB on an 8GB machine etc. We limit what extensions students can have, and we don't use Android apps, so that keeps us within limits with this for most things. You just have to be aware of that if you enable it.

Having the 1000Mb leased line is absolutely a given. You might want to carry less over it and then have the rest of the capacity for future expansion. So you could have a 100/1000 service, 200/1000 etc

We use the Google Sync tool. Works very well on the whole, and Bromcom have been really good at picking up any issues we've seen with it when we report. So if you're a 365 school, I'm sure it would work very well, based on the Google experience!

Agree. However, I would suggest that most tools have the actual features most schools need and would use and a lot of the time. Having worked in multiple schools, its a desire to use a tool that people look at first, or this idea that you "need" a tool where you've already got the facilities elsewhere. For example, everyone rushing to pay for Zoom last year when they had Google Meet and Microsoft Teams already.

Firmly disagree. Firmly. There is no way so many inter-operating systems will work as smoothly as replacing them with as few parts as possible and absolutely no way those individual parts were being utilised to their fullest. Of course, you'll still have to plug in systems now and then but if you don't need to add extras because it already is part of a service, then why should you do so? Paying to duplicate things you can already do is a huge, painful waste of resources. One case in point. If I have Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, it is worth looking at Teams Telephony or Voice to replace the VOIP system due to the ease of management and operability compared to buying in a completely separate system and trying to bolt it into what I have. Do they have as many features as a fully featured 3CX system? Probably not, but the interoperability will be far better.

Hows Windows XP running there? If "we're tied in" is a reason not to explore other solutions - in the IT space of all things - then why aren't you still running Archimedes or even BBC Micros? Change Management is a key part of the job.

Currently our design technology department have a 2D Design > Boxford workflow, which we are barely able to keep working on Windows 7 machines, let alone getting it up and running on 8, 10 or 11. Does anyone use any CAD/CAM services that are cloud based for their design technology workflow, and does anyone have any recommendations as to what we should be asking DT to do in 2021/2022 instead of holding out on Windows systems that we soon won't be able to afford to support in the future?

Doesn't matter what other people use, it's really about what you use in the school already. If you're a Google Workspace/Meet School or a Microsoft 365/Teams School, go from there.

You also shouldn't have to show best practice. It's plainly obvious that if Timmy Timpson has "[email protected]" as their username and "generic1234" as their unchanging password, then Alan Alanson's account is fair game. I've had fights with Children's boards that ask to use school DFE numbers as passwords on Word Documents (to be fair .docx) with the school's name as the file name - and Police departments who file domestic report incidents using .doc files with generic passwords for the entire force area. Schools aren't half of it. The DfE need to decree a requirement for 2 Factor Authentication for staff, sharpish.

This is the other end of criticisms Google get. In this case they announced something and gave a date before it was truly ready and now you have delays like this... on the other hand they announce features as "coming soon" and don't give a date and then also get criticised for it. It'll be fixed soon enough.

I think they aren't reading the criteria correctly there. Plus, are they literally coding in exam conditions? I'm pretty sure they're not treating exams like a speed coding competition. Surely the coding part is delivered as coursework?
