We have teachers who come from all over Kent and they are all in, It took me 30 minutes to walk, an engineer who was scheduled to come today lives in Margate, he had to go via Maidstone then to us. Parents are ringing up and keeping their children off school because apparently they cannot make the trip across the town/local area because its too dangerous. All our major roads have been gritted and are clear, minor roads are clear but patchy in places.

Roberto Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I'm a little hacked off with the local radio. They had someone on there talking about how terrible it was that schools shut when it snows, and they were reading out texts from people agreeing with them. I texted in to say that a) we were open, and that b) when we were open the last time the snow was bad, parents complained that we were open, as did one of the station's other presenters, and as such I thought they were being a little unfair by blaming it all on staff. Oddly enough they didn't read out my text. Gits. Having said that, we're open as normal today, the buses are running as normal, the roads are pretty much clear, and as such I don't understand why so many schools in the area are shut, at least those that are in towns rather than villages.

Roberto Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 (edited) Well we're a college so we're dealing with young adults - who apparently still can't cope with a bit of snow. It's depressing. I was out driving last night and the snow was settling on the A14 and A1 and in places the drive home in the dark on that surface was a properly scary white-knuckle ride even thought it had been gritted, with people sliding about all over the place - some due to idiotic driving but some down to the weather and the roads. If it had been like that this morning I'd be in favour of places shutting. But there was no problems at all that I saw in my 20 mile drive to work today. Edited January 21, 2013 by Roberto

john Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 The M6 Toll was good for skating and sledging last night, watched a boy racer in his Clio decide that Lane 3 looked better than the gritted Lane 1 and proceeded to go slipping around the place hehe and then when I was getting bored of the 20mph in Lane 1 I just stuck the Off-Road mode on the car on and used Lane 2 and quietly and carefully passed about 20 cars and the gritter lorry oh and the idiot boy racer who by that point was trying to keep up with me with my heavy duty snow tyres vanished into the Lane 1 queue, must have realised that he wouldn't beat a 4x4 with snow tyres. Certainly interesting weather we are having, I drove from Yorkshire to Surrey yesterday afternoon / evening and then back up today and such amazing contrasts, Surrey had more snow than we did at home in Yorkshire, Birmingham seemed to be a Snow central last night on the way down and today Manchester north seemed to be sleety /snowy. Very weird

It is still snowing, quite heavily, and it is beginning to stick. According to the forecast, it isnt supposed to last long though. I of course walked the dog in the pouring, freezing rain and got absolutely soaked! If I had just waited a bit I could have been frolicking in the snow
