At my last school we had users with rather a lot of PSD files (Graphics Dept).

We liquidated anything that looked iffy. Clawed back nearly 10GB - nobody came crying so it must have all been rubbish.

i had a school call me earlier their user drive had 4k left ive been at them for ages to tidy up their user areas so ive been letting it fill up hoping when they break it they will think about it more

Perhaps move your year 11 data off the drive once exams are done.

when we get short of space I just quietly move something large like photo collections that I have been told are vital...I don't delete them just archive them off to some offline storage (ie my hard drive) and wait to see who squeals.

 

Last time I did that nobody said anything...ever!

I did exactly the same thing with all the 'important' Art photos - no one has ever said anything

We only have about 600mb to go on one of our shares! Talk about juggle act.

We ended last year with a few mb of space left on both the staff and student file stores, thus year I am not worried about those thankfully as my shiny Sun SAN solved those issues for us this year.....

iDisk or Treesize are awesome applications for finding where the space has all gone - it could be that a quick conversation with a couple of users could recover you enormous amounts of space. Also consider things like BMP2JPG, Image Resizer (use with caution) and compressing a few embedded images in Office files - you might surprise yourself with how much you can get back with minimal impact on users and only a few hours of your time.

Look at SpaceMonger as well for a good GUI for seeing who is hogging the space, I may have to run it soon as Im down to my last 8TB :-/

Got about 20GB between two servers.

 

Have been using BMP to JPEG, Image Resizer, and doing searches for MP3 collections etc.

 

We just need to last 5 weeks, and then its shiny new servers

I was just thinking the same thing.

 

Before I installed a new server last October half-term I had spent most of the year running with less than 10GB free on the data server.

I had to have a clear out at one of my schools, when server space dropped to 0! It was set up so that the staff's "My Docs" sync with the server; JDisk Report (my tool of choice) showed that a couple of teachers had GBs of what (from the folder names) appeared to be personal photos on there. I pointed this out, but over a week later and there's been no change...

 

New govt directives that Reception have to take scads of photos and vids aren't helping, either.

Tell them they have 3 days to remove them, or you will do it for them. If you're feeling generous, offer them a CD to burn them to; if space is so bad that people can't save school files because of all these personal ones, remove them now - your first priority is to the business operation of the school.

I've managed to obtain a 2nd hand server from another site that I'll set up purely as a file server for stuff like machine images. This is apparently a better idea than some effort being made at housekeeping and/or external drives being bought out of the offenders own pockets. (To be fair, I have seen some of the staff take the message on board.)

Then say it to them politely, but say it nonetheless - being a very senior member of staff doesn't permit you to disrupt teaching with your holiday photos.
