Just a quick question. Do you issue PGCE students email address's when they are at your school?

We don't generally give them email addresses, but if they have to use the VLE which is increasingly likely then we do, tbh though most of them don't use it.

Yes we do...not quite sure how this ties in with the whole confidentiality agreement/rules about "looked after" students i.e. those from broken families etc. You can of course just give them limited access to things (i.e. create a "student teacher" group in exchange so they only see the messages they need to and nothing else).

Generally no but if someone needs one for a specific purpose then we will consider it.

We give e-mail addresses, we delegate control to HoDs and the co-ordinator. We used to give just webmail access, most of ours never touch the VLE.. much like the teachers.

We have generic ones which are used for each person. IE we have 3 PGCE students each year and its set like this

Each persons email details are sent around the school the day that they arrive.

Well I generally try and operate of the principle of granting least privileges for people to do their jobs and here, in general, PGCE students don't need an email account.

 

The idea is that in the event that if resources are misused I don't want the school to be in the position where someone could say 'why did they have access to those resources in the first place?'

I totally understand! They're very limited on resources they can access, only the department area they're teaching in usually. I just think email is used for sharing important teaching resources. It's also used for network notifications. We disable the email addresses as soon as they leave.

We do as it integrates them in slightly better, but we also give them the full IT & DP talk as part of their PGCE induction & get them to sign the AUPs.

We provide them with e-mail addresses here, they wouldn't be able to do their job properly if we didn't as the majority of communication is now done via e-mail. The trays in the staff room are now used for external mail coming into the school only.

We're a primary school, and yes we do, but as with other posts, they rarely use them.

We provide full email and VLE access and some MIS access. After all, the point of a placement is to simulate the real world (sorry, the real school environment) and if we can't trust them now, we probably shouldn't trust them when qualified. They get a proper induction and AUP, naturally.

We provide them with email addresses but do not include them on any distribution lists - apart from all school staff as not much confidential stuff is sent to everyone!

 

Most of our PGCE students only want it to write up there uni work!

Any teaching students get a domain login with teacher access levels but nothing else. They have their own email addresses which if needed I can add to the staff mailing list.

 

Some get involved and really use the system some never even log in. It's a mixture really.

 

As a side note, I helped one of our recent trainees with installing Linux (Mint) on a Dell laptop he'd got on eBay without and OS. He's now purchased windows 7 but wants to keep linux, so was emailing me today to ask for advice. I felt very proud. He'll be one of the good ones (and was a PE trainee of all things!!)

We tend to start them off with basic visitors account - which actually have less access than the students.

 

If requested we have a staff visitors group which gives them read access to our shared area (eg dump) and the staff and pupils sites on our VLE.

 

Next step is an email account. They do not go into any "normal" school groups, apart from deparmental ones if requested.

 

Although it was a faff to setup, we can now finely control what they have access to. The most they ever get is access to the departmental mailing list. No emails about the school or students gets directly to them. Of course we can't technically stop others forwarding it on.

Hijacking the thread slightly, was just wondering how many schools actually issue PGCE's laptops. We currently give them logins, emails and limited to access to shared areas and VLE. We have 4 laptops available to loan for lessons but they are complaining they want one each! Granted they need them to teach because every classroom has an IWB and laptop docking station (not fixed computers) but there are plenty of other computers to plan etc on. Some are happy using their own laptops in the classrooms which is great aslong as they plug all the cables back in to the docking station

We dont give them laptops, they can use the PCs we have darted around, with the webmail login page for their emails, and if they need a laptop for the lesson, they use the staff members laptop who is supervising the lesson.
