You're thinking about the public interest wrong, this is not a public interest decision. To me you do clearly have legitimate interests to use the data in this way though, even though that seems to outweigh the privacy interests of the subjects.

If you have the cabling to do it, I'd run both switches together and connect all your edges to both, with RSTP (properly configured!) to manage the links. Then you have a hot spare and won't even notice a failure, instead of a cold spare time bomb. It's too easy for cold configurations to drift and you don't want to discover dead cold hardware when the primary fails.

You could transfer the car into a limited company and own 50% shares each. I do not actually recommend making it this complicated though 😄

This not a FOI matter, it's a data protection issue. Make a subject access request for all personal data held about you including but not limited to CCTV data and remind them of their obligations not to weed or filter such data before disclosure. If you only get that one moment and not your other recent comings and goings from the house you know they almost certainly weeded. Complain formally to the governing body and the information commissioner in the meantime. Talk to Citizens Advice for help getting the text right. (Not legal advice, NaL, get legal advice, Citizens Advice, etc.) Monitoring a private house like this is an outrageous abuse and if the view of your front door is reasonable it's probably possible to see in through the front windows to some extent as well...

Yes, the POTS connection was a key feature when I bought it ten years ago, no calls on that line any more but useful with a UPS for an emergency. Handsets are named and you choose from a list when making an intercom call or a transfer.

I have one at home with three mixed handsets and the SIP from A&A and it works really well. It's not like having a multiline trunk with presented numbers though, you set up multiple SIP accounts for it to connect to and then define which handsets use them. Works really nicely for home but it's quite old now and there are no updates being developed so firewall it completely.

So the only thing that matters is the contract and whether it has been executed with "reasonable skill and care". What you've purchased is a working smartboard with agreed functionality for a warranted minimum amount of time, and that's what they are providing. But I agree SMART aren't doing their reputation any good here. A reasonable person would know that the board isn't going to be used in anger over the summer holidays to flush out any issues, so if it has failed in a week of proper use that does seem to indicate a quality problem. You could try try that on them. And presumably the board was bought from a distributor and not SMART directly so the contact is with the distributor or installers presumably? In which case that's who you dispute with, you don't have a contractual relationship with SMART (whatever the distributor tries to argue to the contrary).

You mean in a graphical environment? If your other aim is to make no changes, these two are not compatible and running a desktop as root is dangerous enough anyway. sudo in a prompt is a much safer alternative.

Eww, please don't. If you have sudo, you can already get any kind of shell you like with its built-in options. (See also "sudo bash", which is another sacking offence.)

It works fine for me enabling pam_mkhomedir via pam-auth-update(8) and then adding umask=0077 to the generated line in /etc/pam.d/common-session. Rule out your authentication thing doing weird magic by testing with a plain 'su' operation, check you don't have extended ACLs on the parent directory, and check you don't have another line in /etc/pam.d anywhere.
