Hi

Quick Poll:

I'm Network Manager for a secondary school. approx 1050 students, 460 ish PC's running Server 2003 (in a VMWare ESX enviroment) and Windows XP (Mix of thin client / VM and thick clients).

Staffing is an issue at the moment with us, or lack of it :boom:

Would be interested in knowing what the staffing is like in other secondary schools of the same sort of size (Network Manager, Technicians etc....)

Cheers!

At our School we have around 1,100 Students around 100-150 Staff - around 650 Desktops and around 70 Laptops

1x NM

1x Assis NM

2x Techs

;) there really is on three of us.. i cant really say too much.. someone is very slack put it that way lol

We cope very well though, considering we have just built the network from scratch, and are having to also fully develop a Learning Platform.

1x IT Manager

2x Snr IT Techs

2x Jnr IT Techs

There is no 'NM' - not really, the duties of an NM are split between the 2 senior techs.

Running Server 2003 R2, 2008, Hyper-V. Windows XP SP3. 700 PCs tops - around 60 of those are laptops and 20 netbooks.

Just moved to a brand new fully virtualised (on Citrix XenServer) Windows Server 2008 R2 domain with XP clients.

It's just me (the Network Manager) and my assistant. He only moved from being part time to full time at the start of July as well!

Secondary school with about 410 students, and around 80 staff.

We have around 550 machines - yes that's more machines than we have students. We have an extremely large quantity of laptops - about 2/3 of our machines are laptops, only around 130 desktop PCs.

There's 3 of us - myself as Network Manager and 2 very good techs. Very hard work at the moment, as we've just rebuilt the domain and moved away from RMCC3 as well as setting up our new Business and enterprise area at the same time. We are now at the troubleshooting stage where the kids have come back and nothing's working quite the way it was planned to, although so far no major problems which is good :)

This thread is a repitition of about 5 others i've seen.

Becta recommends I beleive around...

1:150 for a badly run school

1:300 for the best run school

By best and worst I mean tools used to support the job. Like remote support, imaging, knowledge bases etc etc.... If you want to see roughly how 'well' your team is doing can I suggest you go on the becta sight and download the FITS assessment spreadsheet.

around 700 PCs

around 150 laptops

1xNM

1xSenior tech

1xJunior tech

we occasionally have a 6th former helping us and we certainly notice when we do (worked with us for well over a year now, has his own PC in the office and is more than trustworthy enough to allow administrator access, he's practically a second junior tech)

We do need an official 4th man really, we cope but it's stressful, the NM does the ordering and liasing with suppliers, manages budget etc

Senior tech does the server maintainence and management, software installs, does assistant NM work like liasing with suppliers, acts as 2IC when NM isn't here, also maintains the website.

Junior tech does some web work, and the day to day running about replacing ink cartridges, fixing broken PCs amoung other things.

6th former does the same as the junior tech but can also help in a few of the senior techs tasks (for learning purposes mainly)
