Nick_Young Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Hello, I have been asked to come and help sort out some ICT problems within a school in Norfolk. I was really surprised to find that there was not a stand alone ICT support department?! Instead the ICT system and network management and first, second and third line support is covered by 2 ICT teachers that teach for at least half of their week? Can you guys let me know what the ratio of ICT technicians to computers/users is at your school, schools you have worked in? Thanks in advance for any responses, Nick
ZeroHour Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I can make this a poll if we get some examples of ratios etc to post as options. We could make it more general, how many IT staff to PC ratio?
mossj Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) This was discussed somewhere else... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/school-ict-policies/4000-computer-tech-ratio.html But becta guidlines are: Badly run network - 100:1 Well run network - 150:1 Edited April 27, 2009 by mossj
rad Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) We have 850 workstations inc laptops, 100 IWB and speaker systems, 120 Printers. 2000 students 250 staff. 2 x technicians 1 x admin (printer credits passwords etc 1 x manager (technical as well as software install etc) Edited April 27, 2009 by rad
Nick_Young Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 That would be great! looking through a Becta paper on implementing FITS, they had 6 schools that had these ratios of PCs to ICT Technicians: 90-1 100-1 130-1 140-1 150-1 195-1
Soulfish Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 With around 400 machines and 1200 users (students and staff) we've got 1.5 technicians (myself and someone part time!) although that's moving to two of us full time in the summer. From that you've got 200:1 ratio
CHR1S Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 2 schools on 1 site 4 networks 6 servers 150 ish PCs/laptops 1 Network Manager/ICT Tech/Dogs Body/ anything else (Me) Seems to cope ok
Nick_Young Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 Has anyone heard of a school without a full time technician?
fafster Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Has anyone heard of a school without a full time technician? Nope. Even some large primary schools have one.
mossj Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Theres two schools(primary & a Highschool (that closed down)) in the area we used to support that didn't have one (we just went there once a week)... does that count?
Nick_Young Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 This is a Secondary school with 700 users, 250 pc's 60 laptops 20 interactive whiteboards and no full time technician? I was just rather suprised!?
elsiegee40 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Has anyone heard of a school without a full time technician? Most primaries, round here. I'm part-time, running the library within my 20 hours per week.
wesleyw Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I thought it was 50 to 1 for an inefficient IT Dept or very old equipment 150 to 1 for an efficient IT Dept with new kit? Wes
dwhyte85 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 250 PCs & Laptops (give or take a few), 2 ICT technicians & me managing, I do as much support as my time allows so realistically 2.5-ish, haha. I think considerations need to be made for your network too, I would rather have 400 computers, 2 members of staff and myself with HP printers, standardised builds on PCs, Dell laptops, SMS and lots of other really cool bits than my current network setup of a mixmatch of Toshiba, Acer, HP, some makes i'm not even sure about, although in time it'll be what i want...
localzuk Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 320 computers (desktop, laptop, and thin client) and servers, 40 phones (and the phone server), 20 printers, 32 IWBs, lighting in drama and hall, PA system and i'm sure a few more... 620 pupils, about 80 staff who use computers. And there's just me.
kiwimatt Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 we have 9 servers 2 networks 450 pc's 2 techie types we manage ok but have our crazy times , sometimes they are even work related
EduTech Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I thought it was 50 to 1 for an inefficient IT Dept or very old equipment 150 to 1 for an efficient IT Dept with new kit? Wes your brother said your kind of right, you shouldn't have an inefficient IT Dept you shouldn't just keep hireing people. and as for us 700 Computers, 1x ICT & Network Support Manager (sorry we have to use the FULL title, or we get shouted at ) 2x Technicians 1x Trainee Technician James.
witch Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I work in a Junior school as a part-time tech, but I am also in a large middle school which goes up to Year 8 and therefore has a heavier IT requirement, and I am part-time there as well (15 hours in each school) I don't know of any senior schools around here that don't have full-time techs - but then they are quite large schools (upwards of 1600 pupils, mostly) I can't imagine how a senior school copes without a permanent tech - even a part-time one would at least be dedicated and not rushing off to do other things
mossj Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I thought it was 50 to 1 for an inefficient IT Dept or very old equipment 150 to 1 for an efficient IT Dept with new kit? Wes Its in the thread I linked but I'm farely sure its not 50:1 that would like being having a techie for every two IT rooms...
RichardDS Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 600 PCs 100 Laptops 2040 Students 2 IT Technicians 1 Media/Art Technican 2 Administrators (SIMS.net, VLE, Website, Intranet, Sharepoint, etc.) 1 Supervisor (Me) 1 Technical Manager (Budgets, Policy, etc) If you count the ICT Technicians, the Media/Art Technician and me that is 175:1. If you count the whole team it is 100:1.
SwedishChef Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 roughly 850-900 devices(desktop, laptop, and thin client) 25 servers (including 13 terminal servers, 30-40 phones (and the phone server), 1400 pupils 200 staff (roughly, I think) ...Me, a deputy Manager and two technicans. :-)
FN-GM Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 1 Network manager 3 technicians 27 Servers 900 Clients Plus lots of other toys like IPTV system, cameras etc
teejay Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 15 Servers 540 Desktops 120 Laptops 74 IWB's 47 Printers 2 Part time technicians 1 Full Time technician 1 Full Time Web/Media technician 1 ICT Manager (me)
