How many technical Staff do you have ?

I've been asked to get a "feel" for how many technical staff are need to run our network as it expands.

 

Currently we have 3 1 network manager and 2 Technicians of different grades

 

We have approx 500 workstations and 1200 students.

 

how does that compare ...

 

I'm trying to argue that we need a "speciallist" on SLT as with a "burser" after all who would have a teacher looking after the schools money...

 

(I know you can't really assess as people have differnet needs but it would be good to get a feel for what works)

1... me... just me, the Network Manager! Workload can get pretty heavy sometimes!

 

300-ish clients (inc. laptops and thin-clients), 14 servers (6 of which are Citrix servers).

 

I currently don't get to manage cross curricular stuff. Ideally, I would sit on SLT and have more responsibility and I would manage 1 competant technician and an apprentice/lacky. This would allow for more developmental work, rather than firefighting and being dragged here and there to sort out niggly little things.

Thanks It looks like a real spread of computer to tech ratio but basically always less than 4 bodies

 

interestingly BSF suggests that all schools have 1 technian on site for every 200 students ... so they are going to have to put a bigger office in the basement..

Erm ... my answer has been put up before ... and it is not close to the 4.5 million minions that Ric_ claims I have answering to my every beck and call.

 

We will even be back up to full strength after New Year. The new Asst Net Man who joined us just before the summer had resigned a fortnight ago after being of long-term sick and so we have appointed a new person ... hopefully he will appear on here very shortly.

 

This means we will be back up to ... 1 NM, 2 ANM, 1 term-time techie, 1 full-time placement students, 1 part-time techie (2 days a week) and 1 term-time / part-time website manager.

 

And I do not do support ... nope ... not at all ... and if the Head catches me doing it I am purely doing some performance management on the team to look at the quality of their work!!!

1 NM + 1 Tech, currently down to one NM while new tech works his notice.

 

Roughly 330 machines, 9 servers, SIMS, PARS, VLE, website, CCTV, random other hardware and obligatory "more than 3 buttons". 900-odd users.

 

We're currently campaigning (reasonably successfully) for a teaching assistant who can support IT lessons, since smt have agreed that new tech has enough to do without providing lesson support.

From looking at this thread, the general trend seems to be that the further North you go, the less people there appears to be in the tech support department!

 

I know in Lancashire, very few schools will have more than 2 techie types and from a meeting I went to with Dos_Box Cumbria seem to be in a similar situation.

I go to 3 primary schools ( 1 day a week) and then reside at the high school for the rest of the time.

 

all in all i have about 320 pc's, 9 servers and god knows how many kids.

1x NM(me), 2x technicians (1x experienced, 1x new starter) supporting 240 desktop PCs, 220 laptops and 6 servers with approx 1000 users. We seem to look after anything else with a plug on too, including 45 IWB & various cameras (still & video)

Haha. That line on its own sounds quite funny. Sorry... i'm still young, you'll have to excuse my sense of humour.

 

Anyway, I have 120 machines (curric, admin and laptops) and six servers in total. Also have the responsibility of two different school websites, 28 whiteboards and 28 projectors (figures have been edited... I forgot to include the reception/nursery classes).

 

I work most of the time on my own, but I have a network manager who spends half a day a week at both schools (or at least he used to until I came, now he often skips coming to the two schools that I work for so he can concentrate on the other schools he works for that don't have support). I can still contact him though if anything major goes wrong. I am a junior technician BTW... really its my first real job in IT, i've not long been out of college.

I have <1000 Kids at my school we have about:

120 fixed terminals,

80ish staff laptops

80ish Student (Y7) Laptops (to go up by this amount each year i guess)

 

There is Me the NM.. and i have one PFY (term time only)... we are not over worked, though theres too much for 1

I hope to get another PFY in 2 years time when we get another 120 Student Laptops...

 

I guess the amount of support you need really depends on the Network.. when I joined I was fire fighting all the time.. now everything runs relatively smoothly so we spend less time doing reactive tasks.

I guess the picture is mixed but thouse establishments thatwant more than just firefighting need to invest in staff as well as kit
