Afternoon all Turns out that the archive mailbox database not being given a second copy yet on the DAG was preventing outlook from connecting when the server it's single copy was located on (EXMB01) is shut down. Outlook won't even allow users to see their primary mailbox in this scenario, despite a copy of that database being mounted. The same effect is not seen if the archive mailbox is simply dismounted. EXMB01 has to be shut down. I have since given the archive mailbox database a second copy, so this will also failover in the event of EXMB01 going offline. Thanks

How do I check that? I was under the impression that the only method to link CAS servers to mailbox servers was the RPC client access server setting of the mailbox database, which is this case is pointing to the CAS array. Thanks

The DAG has an IP address set. If I shut one DAG member down, I can connect to the other DAG server using this IP address, regardless of which DAG member has been shut down. - - - Updated - - - For the CAS array? Yes

Afternoon all I've finally found the time this summer to set up a DAG. The process went fairly smoothly, and now I can happily switch the active database between servers in the DAG without issue. The problem occurs when I shut down one member of the DAG (EXMB01). Despite the database being happily mounted on EXMB02, no outlook clients can connect, can't access any of the mailboxes via webmail (mailbox not available error). EXMB01 was originally the only mailbox server in our exchange environment. I can only resolve this issue by booting EXMB01 back up again. Shutting down EXMB02 when the database is mounted on EXMB01 does not cause any issues. The environment is as follows: - Four servers in total, all running exchange 2010 SP3 on windows 2008R2 - 2 X CAS servers in a CAS array, all clients are connecting to the array and not a single server - All mailbox databases have their RPC client access server set to the CAS array - 2 X mailbox servers in a DAG - Arbitrary and discovery mailboxes are located within the primary staff mailbox database that has a copy - We do have mailboxes archiving set up, and the archive database does not have a copy as of yet. The archive database sits on EXMB01 - Public folder databases are replicating between the two members of the DAG Anyone seen this before? Cheers

Hi all I need to set up a DAG and really running out of time to get it up and running as I'm leaving this position soon - my problem is that our DB is very large, and I can't really afford to to take up another couple of terabytes on SAS storage on our SANs. We do, however, have plenty of lower speed SATA storage. Will setting up a DAG with the primary DB on SAS disks and the secondary on lower speed SATA disks cause any major issues? I have read in a whitepaper previously (that I can't find any more) that it's not recommended, but wondered if anyone had experienced issues in practice? Thanks

What's the best way of doing it? Essentially, I've inherited an exchange setup where thousands of staff and student outlook profiles are set to connect directly a single exchange CAS server (as opposed to via a CNAME) and no CAS array currently exists. I'm planning on creating an exchange CAS array this summer, but this obviously means that I either need to 1. create a script to modify all outlook profiles to connect to the CAS array as opposed to the CAS server directly (and as many of these have additional mailboxes and other custom settings, this may be more work than it's worth) or rename the existing CAS server to something else, and call the CAS array what the CAS server was originally called. Has anyone done this before? Thanks

Hi all My wife has decided she doesn't like the weather in the UK (can't figure out why?) and wants to move back to her place of origin (Florida). I'll be moving there by early next year. Which leads to this question, directed at those that either live in the states or know anything about it: What are the differences between educational IT in the UK and the USA? Are there any 'gotchya's" I need to be aware of? Does IT support work on the school level, or just the district level? I'm currently the IT manager for a large educational establishment in the UK, am working on my computing bachelors degree at the OU and hope to have my CCNA and one of the VMWare certifications under my belt by the time I leave. I'm led to believe the US focus comsiderably more of certifications than anything else when looking through candidates for an IT role, so I hope this will be sufficient. Thanks

Can an upgraded CAS (2010 SP2) coexist well with pre-upgraded mailbox servers (2010 RU5)?

No edge server, but I plan on setting up both a CAS array and DAGs after the upgrade.

Not yet, although this is one of my tasks for after the upgrade.

Hi all I'm going to be upgrading my exchange infrastructure from 2010 RU5 to 2010 SP2 (missing SP1). I've chosen SP2 because SP3 hasn't been out long enough yet for my liking. I currently have one CAS and three mailbox servers. It's the first time I've performed an exchange upgrade. How long does it take each server to upgrade? Are there any caveats that I should be aware of? Can I upgrade my CAS first, and leave it running for a few days in coexistence with the not yet upgraded mailbox servers? Thanks

Hi all I have three exchange servers, one with the transport role, two with database roles (staff and students respectively). All servers are exchange 2010 RU5, on 2008R2. One of my database servers has an odd issue. Twice in the last week, the database it hosts has become unresponsive at around mid-morning. No-one can connect via outlook or webmail, and the following (and pretty much only) error is recorded in the application log: All other errors relate to not being able to perform maintenance on the old databases that I've dismounted, but those are continual and appear not to be related in any way. I've performed some maintenance on the server this week, namely the following: - One the exchange server with issues, I moved ~100 mailboxes from an old database into the main database, and dismounted the old database as it no longer has any mailboxes in it. During this process, I temporarily ran out of space on the LUN that hosts the database logs. I increased the LUN size, and remounted the database successfully. - Set up a temporary fourth exchange server to host some mailboxes (~2000) moved from a database that's hosted on the second mailbox server (the one without issues). A reboot resolves the issue for at least the rest of the day, but nothing in the application log appears to help me to determine what caused the issue. The server has been fine up until this week, and it's unlikely a load problem as we're in the middle of the easter holidays, so it should be under less load than usual. The only KB I can find online that even remotely relates to my issue is the following: High version bucket on the Exchange Server 2010 mailbox server but I'm receviing event log 10026, not 10027, and it seems that I can't download that patch without contacting Microsoft. Has anyone seen this issue before? Thanks

Okay, I've had another look at vCenter licensing. According to that, we have the following: - vCenter server 4 standard (capacity: 1/assigned: 1) - vSphere 4 advanced (1-12 cores per CPU) (capacity: 4 processors: assigned: 4 processors) So according to this, I need to purchase two more vSphere 4 advanced 1 processor licenses in order to add another host (assuming ESX 4.1) From looking at our documentation, the two products mentioned above were purchased from two different resellers, so it looks like no bundle was purchased. Still getting my head around the licensing for this

Hi all Quick question... I've got a vmware setup at my current place, set up by an ex member of staff. I know very little about vmware, so I unsure about what I need to do to add an additonal ESX(i) server. We have the following: vmware vcenter server standard 4.1.0 and 2 X ESX 4.1 hosts. I want to add a third host, but have a couple of questions: - With what I currently have, do I need to change any of the licensing? I'm of the understanding currently that I won't, as vcenter server standard allows for more than two hosts as part of the license? - Can I install the latest version of ESXi (as opposed to ESX) and add it as part of vCenter, along with the two current ESX hosts and expect full compatibility between them (moving VMs etc)? Has anyone had any luck in deploying this? I've been working on this on and off over the last few days, but drawn a blank. There is no prebuilt MSI to speak of, and generating my own using multiple snapshot tools has failed (always errors, even without post snapshot modification). Their technical support was useless, the guy I was talking to wasn't aware of what an MSI was, let alone how to deploy sage accounts.

No worries, found a way of doing it in ARD. Terminal command "dsconfigad -localhome enable"

I would, but we've just built this entire network from scratch in our new campus and I haven't had time to set up deploy studio properly yet I'm pretty sure there is a way of doing this through workgroup manager, I just can't find it.

I'm having this issue too. I couldn't spend too long trying to solve it, so I added them manually, albeit with slightly different names (to get around the "already exists" issue). It sets the policies by mac address, so as long as that is set correctly, the name shouldn't matter. I've only had this problem since the OD server was moved to a different vlan. Macs are already bound to OD.
