Looking forward to the shift from term time to non-term time working. A change is as good as a rest, as they say.

 

The final throws of a summer term are always a nervous period for me, with people's last minute big ideas for September bubbling up out of nowhere!

 

Always loved coming in to work on that first morning after the end of term.

To be honest, I'm dreading it.

 

After a high pressured year and barely having any time off, we've just had a steaming pile of **** landed on us at the last minute. Any hopes of enjoying my time off this summer are now gone because I'll be worrying of how we will get so much work done in such a short space of time. Why leave it so late when they must have known this weeks ago, I'm done with bailing others out of the muck.

PAT testing!! wooop woop oh the joy of writing out the sticky labels!! roughtly 850 pcs/ict equipment to do. on the plus side i will have my wireless headphones in and music playing so it s not too bad.

I'd say rationalise the workload, and let the least important bits of it drop. Then when questioned on why it hasn't been done, be honest and say you didn't have enough notice.

 

But we never do that do we? We always put ourselves out until it's done.

I have found you cant do everything.

 

Make yourself alist and prioritise the jobs that need doing immediately.

So far we've been able to...

 

Rebuild every computer with a fresh image of 20H2.

Migrate Abode stuff to named user licensing

Interactive display screens in a further 20 classrooms

Upgrade SCCM to the latest version, and populate the software centre

Re-think the staff/student GPOs

Get most software syncing and using SSO with Azure

Got three buildings fibred up to and cabled out

Create new accounts for next intake

Replace some multimode fibre with single mode, replace switches with ones capable of bonding multiple 10GB links for hub areas of the network.

We had teachers wanting to come in and I ended up telling SLT that unless we close for a few days and I can take systems down then nothing will get done.

 

We always send out (or get the Business Manager to send out) and email telling the staff when there will be network or service disruption over the holidays. It normally gets combined with the site teams "parts of the school closed for building/decorating works" list.

How long did that take???

 

We've got over 800 PC's and I just don't see how we can upgrade / reimage them all in 5 weeks and take leave! and do all the other jobs!

We can easily do 150 station a day with MDT as other than pressing F12 and selecting the correct image we want, it's all automated

I can easily do all our desktops in 1 day, thanks to SCCM

Yeah. When I first started out I wound up working weekends with Wed and Thurs off instead, and I think there was only one teacher who ever pegged it and didn't ask me if I was looking forward to the weekend on Friday.

 

Teachers where I am now a pretty good and normally ask "did you get any time off?"

I'm struggling to actually work out what we're doing this summer?!

 

We've no hardware refresh etc other than half a dozen projector > TV swaps but they're being done by our AV company.

 

IT is all "Cyber Security / Cyber Essentials / etc" so MFA, password policies, VLAN isolation for CE etc.

Been wearing shorts and a polo t-shirt since after may half-term.

 

When the site team can and the PE staff can wear joggers, trainers, shorts etc all year round why can't IT?

H2 builds are supported for longer than others, also, I prefer to run an older build as it allows for any bugs to be ironed out

Brill - I haven't started work on the deployment etc yet thankfully so I'll stick with the 20H2 release as well then.

While I'd normally agree for the longer time etc, I'd go with 21H1 (20H2 already being a year old nearly and only has about 4 months longer support time both of which will be outdone by 21H2/Win11), as 21H2 is going to be released around October so being so close it seems silly not to get prepared with the new GPOs etc

The way I look at is, deploy the H1 build when you rebuild over summer then push out the enablement update when H2 over Christmas or Feb half term. With the past few releases of Windows, all the code for the new builds is pushed out with the cumulative updates but left dormant. When it’s time, you can install the enablement update which takes two minutes to install, the computer reboots and you’re on the new build.
