Good news, everyone! They've reduced the alert level down to 3.

Under level three, the virus is considered to be "in general circulation" and there could be a "gradual relaxation of restrictions".

 

If we can only now start the "gradual relaxation of restrictions", what have wee been doing up until now?

Great, might actually start doing things face to face instead of over the telephone. I've been dealing with some extremely stressful stuff this week and if I hear the words "Sorry this line is a bit crackly isn't it" I'll lose it...

Link: Harry Potter and The Dark Knight among 450 films to be re-released when UK cinemas reopen [The Independent]

 

A spate of popular films will be re-released as cinemas prepare to re-open across the UK after being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Approximately 450 films, including the Harry Potter franchise, the Dark Knight trilogy and Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, will be coming to UK screens in the near future.

 

The titles were chosen by the Film Distributor’s Association, the UK’s leading distributors, and published in a collection called Relaunching Cinema: Content for Recovery.

 

In England, Vue cinemas are scheduled to reopen from 4 July, and Cineworld from 10 July. Odeon and Showcase have both stated they plan to reopen in “early July”.

 

While there are a couple of big releases on the horizon – Disney’s live-action Mulan remake is out on 24 July, and Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi blockbuster Tenet is scheduled for 31 July – cinemas are relying on the appeal of re-releases to see them through the opening weeks

 

Many of these will be franchise films. As well as Harry Potter, the Back to the Future, Matrix, Hunger Games, Twilight and Fast and Furious franchises will be made available to watch in cinemas.

 

Recent acclaimed films such as the Oscar-winning Parasite, 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will also be gracing the nation’s screens, alongside classics like Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia and His Girl Friday.

Our local community cinema (a charity, staffed by volunteers) is desperate for funding. I hope that it will be able to re-open before too long. I don't use it often, as it doesn't show many films I'm interested in, but it's a great resource for the community. I hope they show Parasite, as I missed it first time around. The only other films on that list I'd want to see again are Bicycle Thieves, The Third Man and Pan's Labyrinth. Surely they must be reviving Cinema Paradiso, too!

Cut a lot of this already out as it's waffly, but already a local schools been infected by these "very very very low chance primary kids" (Quote from Gov)

 

Teacher and student at Shaw Ridge Primary School test positive for Covid-19

 

YEAR 6 children have been sent home from a Swindon school for the rest of the week after a teacher and pupil tested positive for coronavirus

 

Staff who have been in close contact with their infected colleague will now be tested for Covid-19 and the results will dictate when the school can reopen for its oldest pupils

 

Over the weekend the school received confirmation that a pupil in Year 6 had tested positive for the virus

 

And at 10am yesterday it was confirmed that a teacher of the 'bubble' the child was in also tested positive

 

Headteacher Sally Cowell said in her email to parents: “We are continuing to take all necessary steps as advised by Public Health England to ensure this does not spread further and all staff who have been in close contact with the infected staff member must be tested as a precautionary measure.

 

“Because of this, we do not have sufficient staff to maintain the Year 6 class bubbles and so we have taken the decision to close these bubbles, at least for the remainder of this week as we await staff test results.

 

TLDR version, pupil infected teacher causing entire Year 6 to be closed.

 

It's interesting to see it being picked up quickly, but I can't help but feel if a school is going to close every time one case is found it's going to be "too soon" to open again

Link: Nine hand sanitizers could be toxic, US government warns [The Guardian]

 

The US government has advised consumers not to use nine different types of hand sanitizer and warned that they can be toxic.

 

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulator issued a warning against using hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem, a company based in Mexico, because of the potential presence of methanol (wood alcohol), a substance that the FDA warned “can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested”.

 

The agency identified Eskbiochem’s products called All-Clean Hand Sanitizer, Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer, CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol, Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer, The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer, CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol, CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol, CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol, and Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer, according to an FDA notice.

 

The FDA reported that it tested samples and found some containing various proportions of methanol, and no ethyl alcohol, the typical ingredient. “Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects,” the FDA warned. The agency added that “substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.”

 

Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment, the agency said. The FDA contacted Eskbiochem to recommend the company remove its hand sanitizer products from the market due to the risks associated with methanol poisoning.

 

Meanwhile, it recommended consumers stop using the hand sanitizers and dispose of them immediately in appropriate hazardous waste containers, but not to flush or pour the products down the drain.

I've heard anecdotal evidence of a school in Essex somewhere that has closed because a number of staff tested positive following the headteacher's leaving do.

Selfishness, complacency, or both.

Edit: I've seen a fair few posts circulating on facebook from the police in my area's official pages, about shutting down raves and allsorts! It's crazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if we have repeat of infection spike sometime around Sept/Oct - it is summer now, most people go outside and still don't congregate that much indoors. Come autumns and rains ... Unless amount of people infected is near 0 - can't see that happening. But happy to be proven wrong

...With Croatia easing lockdown measures, players were not obliged to observe social distancing rules and were seen embracing at the net at the end of their matches....

I watched some of it on tv. There was normal crowd attendance. We commented at the time that it was a disaster waiting to happen.

 

Dimitrov was first to test positive. He flew in from the USA to play.... and is now recovering in Monaco. I assume he flew there too :rolleyes:

Prime minister Boris Johnson has been accused of "dodging scrutiny" at a crucial moment for the coronavirus crisis, after Downing Street announced an end to daily televised briefings from Number 10.

 

Mr Johnson led the last of the daily question and answer sessions alongside chief medical officer Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance on Tuesday evening, saying that in future they would only take place when "we have something really important to say".

 

Millions of viewers had tuned in to the conferences at 5pm each day throughout the Covid-19 outbreak, in an unprecedented exercise in public scrutiny which saw a number of ministers come a cropper and featured a deputy chief medical officer openly challenging the behaviour of top Number 10 aide Dominic Cummings...

Well quite! But the R-0 will be increasing with reckless abandon once all the restrictions are dropped...

 

The R-value alone though is not the issue, IF the virus is weakening....it's still a relatively mild disease for the vast majority of people, those who are more vulnerable should continue to take maximum precautions.
