The Covid restrictions say "up to 6 people" or "2 households". Consent issues aside, and assuming the other guidelines around distancing are met, 6 people from different households outside is fine. (Parents golf club has been looking into this for competitions and I get to hear all about it)

 

In other news, some of our contractors have been wearing "stay socially distant" high-vis tops, which are rather nifty.

And there’s the problem. I can’t see how we could possibly distance ourselves from 4 others sat round a pub garden table.

 

We walked to the local Beefeater last night. We haven’t been there for years. The garden is big. The tables were easily 3 metres apart. Staff all in masks (unlike the pub we went to last week) and the food perfectly acceptable in a limited menu “something with chips” way.

 

The other thing I am seeing is marquees at a number of establishments in this area. I can’t see how sitting in a marquee with the walls in place is classed as “outdoors”.

Well that has been New Yorks answer to keeping eating establishments open during their lockdowns... it seems that covid knows the difference between a normally constructed building with windows etc that open, and marquees/greenhouses/leantos that are in the middle of a garden....

Surely it's a matter of ventilation and change of air per hour - I'd feel totally safe in a marquee with all the walls rolled up, can't see that being much different to sitting at a picnic table if I'm honest.

Went to a pub yesterday for the first time in a year. OH and I both unexpectedly free, sun unexpectedly shining, just the right compromise between enough people being around to not feel like an exhibit and feel that there were people or socialising, but also similarly distanced to sitting in a park (it was actually a beer garden, not a marquee). Nice cold beer, average but freshly cooked food; felt great. Really looking forward to socialising with friends, but this felt like a step on the way - partly because it was on the spur of the moment. Haven't done anything like that for ages.

I have just heard from a former colleague that a senior member of staff returned to work today after a near-fatal encounter with coronavirus.

 

Although he is back at work, he has forgotten lots (how to logon etc) He is tired, looks drawn and is aged terribly.

 

Such a shame: He's one of the good guys. It sounds like his return to work will be short.

 

Some good news! I heard today that said former colleague and senior member of staff has improved to the point where he is APPROACHING his normal functionality.

 

Although he still appears aged, he is able to perform most of his senior staff duties.

 

Perhaps his return to work won't be so short after all.

I replied in relation to that post with a much broader view of the vaccine roll-out, one that paints a fair picture. I posted a graph to help visualise the ups and downs of the vaccine roll out. Below is an update of that graphic - 3 times over. All three use the same data. The first shows a trend projection based on 4th order polynomial which shows we heading towards a negative vaccine rate. The second uses 5th order polynomial and shows we will be vaccine 4 million per day soon. Both those are using inappropriate statistical techniques for this data set, but are valid mathematically. My point is: data needs to be used intelligently, not pulling single data points with sweeping conclusions - that's little better than clickbait. To conclude, I have included a third graph which has a trend line over a rolling 14 day period. It shows vaccine rates varying 300,000 and 600,000. It shows a decline during early April but an steady since then. Moderna availability may lead to a further increase.

Ended up getting my first jab on Thursday, from Notts Trust of all places--20yo is registered at her uni address in Nottingham, so they sent her a letter inviting anyone living with her (as a vulnerable/shielding person--she's on immunosuppressants) to get a jab. That meant I ended up driving an hour to Newark Showground to get my science, but science I have got! UPGRADE UNLOCKED

 

(I don't live with her at her uni address, to be clear, but she's been back with us since early November, so I am in a bubble with her. All a bit roundabout, really, but I promise I'm not cheating the criteria.)

 

Had the AZ jab at 10am and felt fine most that day, then started to get a bit ropey about 7pm. Figured it was going to be downhill from there so took some paracetamol and set myself up in bed with Netflix, then had a rough night of sweats 'n' shivers; not the worst night of fever I've had (no hallucinations) but not brilliant fun, tbh. Felt a bit wiped out on Friday as a result, but keeping myself dosed up with painkillers was enough to keep it in check. Been pretty much okay since then: appetite a bit depressed (I think because my taste went, so there was no pleasure in food) and arm stiff like I'd done a day's heavy lifting in the garden, but all in all definitely a better experience than having COVID.

It was my grandmother's funeral yesterday, we were only allowed 20 people at the crem service. Afterwards, we went to a local pub as we had booked their outdoor space, which was 3 pods with heaters in each. They all had covered roofs and 2/3s of the side panels on. As we were made up of 3 households, we claimed a pod each as our base, then went to talk to others by standing outside their pods. Considering the situation, it worked well.

The rate of decline has slowed, but by my reading it is still dropping - I attach a graph for this year. There is some way to go to reach the lowest incident rate of last summer, but we have more transmittable variants and more testing now. The rate dropped most last year between May and July, so we'll have to wait and see what occurs this time. I believe it has been stated rates may well rise, but severe cases, hospitalisations and death won't follow the same trend as before. The number of people who have been vaccinated is an all time high every day.

Mme LeMarchand and I have been getting those for the last week - but 12 weeks for use isn't until the end of the month and the system only shows bookings for the next few days.
