mikeprice Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Also - looking at the factories around here - and everywhere else that I live - some people get to work by car - and park in the factory car park. But other people - and quite a lot of them - use the bus. Which is why the roads that pass the factories always have a good bus service. But now people are supposed to avoid busses and so presumably they will drive - but the car parks are probably not big enough - and anyway adding loads of cars (OK non electric cars for 'you-know-who') will add to the polution when it would be nice to try to keep some of the clean air that has suddenly appeard It is almost as if the government has no idea what it is like to be the sort of person who has to get the bus to get to work or it that just me 3
LeMarchand Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Different site today. Hand sanitiser still alcohol-free, little social distancing in place. Just learned Governors paid for a short term (I hope) Zoom sub when they could've used Google for free...
jmak Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Last week: We're investing £250m* in an emergency active travel plan to create improved cycle facilities and help our public transport system to cope. This week: Get in your car and drive. *Taken from an already announced funding pledge. I guess we're not seizing this once in a lifetime opportunity to take something positive from an awful situation. I do wonder where everyone is going to park when the millions who normally use public transport start driving to work.
Andycat Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 At least the oil prices will go back eh? I'm sure that's an unintended consequence and coincidence...
mikeprice Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 So 'Stay Alert' means 'Stay at home" wonderful thing the English language Was watching the Churchill movie last night they mentioned that he 'mobilised the English language and sent it into battle' no comment

StevieM Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 In case you haven't seen these government documents, which were published/updated yesterday: Our plan to rebuild: The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy Coronavirus outbreak FAQs: what you can and can’t do Actions for educational and childcare settings to prepare for wider opening from 1 June 2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19): implementing protective measures in education and childcare settings What parents and carers need to know about schools and other education settings during the coronavirus outbreak 1
Ditto Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 One for the DataHeads I guess I fit the 'DataHead' handle! Read this yesterday and boy, has the thread grown. It's great how the name COVsted rolls off the tongue so easily! Another data tweet (form one of our own Edugeekers) with a critique on one of the governments chart. I thought teacher style review by @wackiejood was brilliant! 1
LeMarchand Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 In case you haven't seen these government documents, which were published/updated yesterday use outdoor sports courts or facilities, such as a tennis or basketball court, or golf course – with members of your household, or one other person while staying 2 metres apart One certainly hopes that one's caddy isn't counted as the "other person". Surely one can't be expected to carry one's own clubs whilst playing a few rounds! 2

Surely one can't be expected to carry one's own clubs whilst playing a few rounds! - I know people for who this will be a serious dilemma! On the one hand, the caddy can't readily work from home, but on the other one can't possibly play against the caddy in match-play format! I can see there being a clarification from one of the ministers soon.
Andrew_C Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 isn't this is going to be harder to police?Exactly what the police are saying...
mikeprice Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Exactly what the police are saying... Especially as there seems to be some confusion - some people being deliberately confused and some just confused and a lot of people seem to just be reading that the lockdown has been relaxed and you can drive to places so - weee - off we go A caravan place in Rhyl (near where I used to work) has been complaining that they have received a 'lot' of calls about booking for holidays and from caravan owners wanting to come and stay for a week or more apparently they get quite upset/aggressive when it is explained that the rules are different in Wales - and you are not allowed to go away for a week's holiday ANYWAY! I don't think the people making decisions know how 'the people' think when they are making statements which results in people getting the wrong end of several sticks 1
LeMarchand Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 (edited) @VeryPC - got any socks still? You could repurpose them. Edited to include video as link had gone pear-shaped. Edited May 12, 2020 by LeMarchand 4

And I'll wager a few sub-eds are already lining up the journos and 'togs to make sure they get the picture and story they want. It sickens me that the actions of a few hundred people (on both sides) will overshadow the millions who go about this in a civilised and sensible manner. 1

Which is probably why they waited to announce this until the weather became colder and windier On my daily bike rides I have noticed FAR less people out walking and cycling If the good weather had continued the roads from Merseyside to the Lake District and Wales would have been far busier
hardtailstar Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 The only thing I am changing is going running for longer. There's no way I am going to go out to parks just for a sit down or drive to the beach to sunbathe. When I can potentially still catch it! 1
VeryPC Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 @VeryPC - got any socks still? You could repurpose them. Edited to include video as link had gone pear-shaped. We've got socks in the office but I haven't been there for 8 weeks! But luckily I've got a couple of pairs at home so that's my afternoon sorted. I'll let you know how I get on... - Ryan
Norphy Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 I hope that the who did this gets the book thrown at them: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/may/12/uk-rail-worker-dies-coronavirus-spat-belly-mujinga Unfortunately, I can't see a manslaughter or murder charge sticking as proving that this was directly responsible for this woman's death would be difficult but I hope they do time.

There's no way I am going to go out to parks just for a sit down or drive to the beach to sunbathe. When I can potentially still catch it! Personally I'm not going to change my habits just yet. I'm in a position where I can work from home, I go out 4-5 times a week for runs and once for shopping. I live in a flat on my own, I miss the weekly Parkrun, socialising, contact with friends and relatives that is for sure but I am just not comfortable doing anything but what is absolutely necessary both from a point of passing anything on or getting the virus and unknowingly passing it on. I had the symptoms up to just over a month ago. 1
