YouTube - Do you block or allow access to students?

Do you allow or block youtube for students?

Strict Safe mode for students and teachers can approve videos/channels.

Blocked for years 7-11 but allowed for ,6th form. We use moderate resticted mode and users need to be signed into G Suite.

Blocked for all students. I am looking at relaxing restriction and allowing specifically requested YouTube pages. No real progress on this yet (early days)

We allow for all in a primary school, all computers are key word monitored and we made the decision to teach what they can search for and saves them finding ways around YouTube. Children not allowed on computers without teacher permission

All schools have safe mode set for all.

 

Primary 1, internet access fairly well supervised: All students have access.

Primary 2, internet access less well supervised: All students have access

Junior, internet access is supposed to be supervised: Blocked, apart from a handful who need a reward for acting like a human being (and are the ones who got the block instituted) - these are one to ones.

So the problem is they want to make a bomb, but are too lazy to read instructions, they need a video to follow?

 

Sounds like a problem that solves itself.

 

I have strict youtube dns moderation, with approval via gsuite. Then youtube keyword is blocked via impero/senso/etc for groups/rooms until needed, or via filter, AD group for people who are sensible enough, which is usually removed after a while as it turns out they're not that sensible.

 

Problem last time I looked was a) strict isn't that strict, I'd rather have 0 allowed by default, b) once approved, still can't find the video with search, need exact urls

Blocked. Good grief. Can you imagine the timewasting, not to mention the bandwidth sucked up.

 

We'll unblock specific videos when requested, and are happy to unblock for an hour or so when asked by individuals. Comments get nuked by Smoothwall, because no-one (adult or child) needs that cesspit in their lives.

Blocked by default and teachers can request it to be unblocked for a room for a specific period, however strict safe search is always enabled.

We use DNS forwarders to set it as fully unrestricted, but would have to review that if we ever opened it up to students.

 

Very occasionally we need to make a video available to students, in those circumstances I temporarily host it elsewhere. Doesn't happen often enough for me to come up with a more legit solution, thankfully.

Enforced Restricted mode for everyone. Blocked over WiFi SSID that iPads are on, allowed on the WiFi SSID that users login with their username&password on.

When the Trust I'm a part of moved to Fortigate at the end of summer, but ran in to a load of issues with Yotube and Google SafeSearch, I got so much flack from all 4 schools!

It's like the teachers couldn't teach without Youtube!

Can you force needing to log in? Seems that when you're not logged in you get slightly more stuff available.

Did those of you who require GSuite sign in enable the YouTube 'app' for students in GSuite then?

 

When I looked at this to use the 'Approve' options in YouTube the students had to be able to login to YouTube using their GSuite account which required them to have the YouTube service enabled against their account which: 1) Requires Parental approval for under 13s and 2) Allows Students to upload content to their school YouTube channel for all the world to view.

 

Is that still the case?

we use strict mode on all our staff and students, one policy for all - although sometimes we lose out on some good educational videos, in which case i usually email the author and ask their permission to download their videos

We had to open youtube for all to access 'educational resources' however as always the use gets abused by students watching gaming videos, etc. restricted mode is enabled and our filtering has CAC (Cloud Application Control) so we can see reports of search words used in youtube, google etc and what videos's they've watched, posted comments etc.

I wish there was a "you have to sign in, you can't upload video, and you can only watch videos approved by staff, and if staff approve videos you can actually search for them" option.

Our ISP, LGfL, were working on a system just like that but shelved it for some reason. It's a real shame, as the idea of being able to whitelist videos really appealed. I've yet to find a way of allowing a single video.
