Who else does this?

Whilst you have loved ones that buy you things, there is often a certain item that, for whatever reason, may be just too expensive or hard to find or that it is an convenient excuse to finally buy for yourself.

Do you buy yourself a pressie, and if so, what do you have your eyes on this year?

For me, it's the 4k Blu-Ray of Close Encounters (my favorite film). Whilst other 4k Blu Rays are around the £24 mark, this is £59.99!!! I have no idea why it's this price (I could get the 4k Harry Potter boxset for £79!), but seems like an ideal excuse to grab it.

Just bought the components for a new PC, buying it now is just a coincidence but I'll say it's a present to myself. My current PC is over 5 years old and was due replacement. I'm also picking up new car next weekend - again just a coincidence! (Ordered in October) And this week I bought 4 new replacement windows for the house not sure if I can count that either!

 

And I just bought the new Season 3 Twin Peaks bluray boxset for myself (and I haven't even got a bluray player...)

Just trying to justify to the missus why we should ditch our 11 year old 40” TV for a new 55” OLED. My present to “us” for Christmas- she’s having none of it.

We’ll see....

 

I'm sure she'll thank you on the day :)

I have bought a present for the OH that really is for me, well us! I’m sure she won’t mind!

 

Yes, I have a mate that bought his missus a lawnmower for Christmas, it didn't go down so well.

The wide screen tv Mr gee40 bought in advance of a world cup some years ago caused a major incident some years ago. I kept being told we couldn’t afford new lino to replace the knackered old stuff in the kitchen and suddenly this tv was on order.

 

I got the kitchen sorted quite promptly after that. That was the last big purchase made without prior consultation!

 

At Christmas we tend to buy something that’s low on the priority list as a mutual Christmas present. This year we’ve bought a hedgehog house, bug hotel and bird feeders as we’re converting the garden from tortoise-friendly to wildlife-friendly. (Our 50ish year old tortoise had to be put to sleep earlier this year after getting a massive tumour :( )

I'm not going buy myself a present until February, and then it will be a combined Christmas/Birthday present. I'm going to buy new wheels for the Brompton. The new ones will fit my 15 year old model and has better gearing. When I bought my Brommie it was £620; the equivalent model today is twice that.

Yeah...this year we buying ourselves return tickets to Cape Verde to see our daughter...just love to buy stuff for myself.....Merry Christmas to me!!

My present to me was to have my French horn, Henry, serviced and sorted out. It wasnt cheap but now he is dent free, with very free moving valves and lovely shiny brass

A few years back, a school I was helping out at got me some book vouchers as a christmas/thank you present.

I used them to get some books I'd had my eye on, wrapped them and put them under the tree.

Only thing I've bought for myself is a Fitbit Flex 2, which was on sale for £39.99

Currently can't afford to buy myself anything else!

 

Might get myself a 500GB SSD when i get paid though, maybe...

Yup went to Forbidden Planet for a secret Santa present at work got present for under a fiver and bought myself the Nick Cave graphic novel Mercy on Me with a signed print. So far have no other presents bought.

I'm going to order myself an electric guitar kit, Les Paul shape. It will probably take me all year just to paint and varnish, but looking forward to it.

 

This has reminded me that i want a bass, I have a ESP ltd EC-50 (i think) Guitar. Tried learning to play it with Rocksmith, got over 100 hours playing with that.

 

I haven't a clue what brands etc are good, and if it's worth splashing out on or getting a cheapish one.

I usually wait until after Xmas and get myself something that I was hoping someone else might get me. Though this ear it might be a set of ear defenders as Bonus Daughter #1 is due to sprog over the holidays.

I'm no expert, but I'd advise going to a couple of retailers and play the instruments, as the feel of them playing can differ greatly. You may find you prefer a particular neck shape or a high/low action or weight might be important to you. Then there's the tone differences from alternative body materials. It's really a try and see scenario.

 

As for brands, pretty much any manufacturer of guitars will have bass products. Here's just a few...

Gibson (USA made) own Epiphone (Indonesia/Far East)

Fender (USA Made) own Squier (Indonesia/Far East)

Yamaha

Ibanez

I want a new "cheap" phone . Burnt in the screen on the work S8 already, so want a non-flagship LCD screen personal phone! Happy Christmas me!

Gearbest.com and Xiaomi Redmi note 4 - highly recommend after it was recommended to me - only £120 ish

As a bass player, I can recommend Ibanez as great starting basses. The GSR range are set out as more affordable for beginners but they are really decent hardware, and are highly rated. I have the GSR 180 and really enjoy playing it.

 

 

 

As for buying myself a Christmas present, I won't this year as I've already bought myself far too much stuff. However, birthday in January might be a different story ;)
