sippo Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 We have a direct access leased line and their hosted firewall from schools broadband and our own smoothwall box here and apart from yesterday's outage, about 10 minutes of DNS weirdness the other week and a short outage when they were hit by a ddos attack a couple years back (from memory) we haven't had much of any noticeable downtime caused by issues with them except when our traffic has occasionally maxed out our connection. We are exactly the same at our secondary, but we still experience issues. I have been a customer for well over 5 years, we actually signed a new 3 year agreement last summer 2017, and performance is definitely dropping. We even have issues now.

bossman Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 No and unlike others I don’t claim to have the theories or intel do I? I was only asking as you seemed to be quite in the know and quite quick to jump on anyone who claimed they had problems and had an opinion on the matter....quite anxious if i may say... I’m not keen to support anyone. It was just as much an inconvenience to me as it was to everyone else and I have had discussions in relation to it. Again with what you have said, it is contrary to how it comes across, quite obnoxious and downright rude when other professionals are just trying to put their point across don't you think.....I'm just saying like... What I have said is, however, that making broad statements without any real substance behind them doesn’t particularly help anyone. This was particularly in relation to comments along the lines of “they have no redundancy in place”. Nobody on here has yet posted in detail their configuration to suggest this is true, so why was I wrong to question it? That isn’t me defending SB or being their supporter, it is me wanting to know if there is truth in it as it will be a factor in future decision making processes if truthful. In your opinion they may seem to you like broad statements but why should anyone have to supply evidence every time they post something which is just their opinion?.....see what I am getting at?..... I would ask the same question if it was any other service or provider I was using, if the same issues applied. The fact it is SB as a company is entirely irrelevant really. I get no benefits for supporting them, I get no disadvantages for criticising them. We pay the same as everyone else so it makes no odds to me. I do really understand this but its not the questions its the way in which it came across that makes it look like you are (Don't take this the wrong way please) Mr angry.....your probably a very nice guy but obviously frustrated with other professionals on here......we not on here to pull each other to pieces are we? I hope this justifies my position to you. That was not my intention at all....but it does seem that I have a valid point above in that you feel you have to justify yourself to me......you don't and i have in no way asked for justification in any way shape or form.....I'm just being nice to someone on here as a fellow professional who may be a little bent out of shape and feels like he needs to vent his spleen with others on this forum.....(I really don't mind if that's how you feel but I'm looking at this purely logically) Have a good day my friend 2

In fact, I think you've come in this discussion to jump on me as you are now discussing me and my posts and not Schools Broadband? At least I was discussing redundancy, which is related? If you get my drift. I'm certainly not anxious and I don't believe I have been 'downright obnoxious or rude' however if that is how you've perceived it then I apologise as it certainly wasn't my intention. I just wanted to get to the bottom of whether there were real core service issues here which I (we as a collective) needed to be aware of, as it will affect future decisions, however it seems that has been misinterpreted really. If they are opinions then that is fine, I wouldn't have questioned it, however in this instance it came across as though there was some knowledge behind it which is why I asked and I wasn't wrong to do so as I was told it came from an inside source at Schools Broadband? I justified myself to you because I felt it necessary to clear up any misinterpretation about me, my reasoning and my intentions. That's all. Have a lovely day too. 1
Blue_Cookeh Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 I think it'll be fair to judge SB based on how reliable connectivity is on the new Netsweeper platform to be fair. Lightspeed certainly left a very sour taste in my mouth e-mailing us (i.e. SchoolsBroadband customers) directly, so much so that I wouldn't consider them if I were looking to filter onsite. 2

Primus Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Chromebooks working just fine isn't what I've heard since your replacement doesn't support single sign on for Chromebooks you've asked schools to either have them all on a default filtering profile which is a major issue for safeguarding since you can't assign browsing history to a single student as you need to or they have to subsequently log in again - this is not my definition of "just fine".
Blue_Cookeh Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Could you not use RADIUS accounting on your WiFi network to identify Chromebook users? Just wondering, we're not using Chromebooks... yet.
FN-GM Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Could you not use RADIUS accounting on your WiFi network to identify Chromebook users? Just wondering, we're not using Chromebooks... yet. This would mean students would need to connect Chromebooks to the WIFI via their credentials before logging on and later disconnecting for wireless when they have finished.
mjk Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 We use RADIUS accounting on chromebooks and it works fine. Students currently do need to authenticate onto the wifi and then log into the chromebooks, but this is getting fixed in a future version which will allow passthrough authentication. I guess in future you could also get them to authenticate automatically with a pre-defined password and then login to the chromebook and have that passthrough to the RADIUS, when the new feature is available. 1
DeGrimmy Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 Our Netsweeper equipped primary school's phone and internet has gone down. After the 2nd time contacting Schools Broadband, they let us know that their Virgin business line is down. Anyone else having problems? 1
Dom_ Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 One of my schools virgin lines is down, the rest are fine though... I'm sat in a school with a virgin line & SBB right now... 1

We've no Virgin NNI outages, issues with Netsweeper or anything in our core. It must be a Virgin issue elsewhere. Sorry to hear you're having problems though. We'll liaise with Virgin on it. Dave

Sorry to hear you're having problems though. We'll liaise with Virgin on it. Dave So we had no Internet or phones at School since yesterday afternoon, I checked about 11.15pm at night and still could not remote in via the VPN. Checked again this morning at 7am and the connection worked. Not sure when it was fixed but definitely went 12 hours with no connection. That is the longest outage we have had at the Primary School. Not good for a School not to have phones available for parents to ring in or us to ring parents. Someone tell me what the process is to get compensation for this!!! @SchoolsBroadband Edited March 8, 2018 by fiza
SchoolsBroadband Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Good morning @fiza. Firstly I'm very sorry you had an outage. I'm waiting to here from our technical director on a full report but it seems as though Virgin had an issue in Telecity / Equinix data centre in London. It affected us very randomly with about 10 circuits going down out of the hundreds we have with Virgin. These were split over multiple interconnects. It definitely wasn't anything our side. You'll be sent an outage report as usual in due course. To make a claim email [email protected] and we will credit your account in line with what we are entitled to pay you. Thanks Dave
Nightshade2k Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 Reaaaaaaallly Slow speeds today for Down and UP anyone having issues with TT Business connecs in the southeastern area??? will phone SB up in a second anyone else having issues?
KevByrne Posted March 9, 2018 Author Posted March 9, 2018 Were in the West Midlands and our 200MB Leased Line is currently giving me between 90-110MB down and 60MB-90MB up. So not great but not the slowest either.
Nightshade2k Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 yep the up is crucifying me (no pun intended) but i have Pearson On Demand Exams this afternoon, this makes me sad!
