Netsweeper with Schools Broadband

Rather than go into a long painful story, ill just say this in the end because we run as a conference site at our school and we have times when BYOD users were using our guest internet services and technicians were not on site we specifically got to the point where we asked SB to allow us to use the Fortigate Filtering for our BYOD SSID's because while they could set NS to work with specific filtering for the SSID , there are some devices that require "additional" configuration to work with netsweeper aka editing settings on certain devices to point at the proxy manually. i have said to SB that imo at the moment its best to offer customers access to the Fortigate filters for BYOD if they have similar issues to ours, the bone of contention is that this adds load direct to the centralised Fortigates they use, so too many people using these instead of NS could cause them issues. I have remained quite silent on this point, but i have decided moving forward that while NS im sure will work out in the end, that im likely going to go full onsite fortigate filtering in the near future, ive been chatting to a couple of guys in the US and UK who are using full onsite fortigate and while there are risks as with everything we do this seems like a good option, i know that local lightspeed and smoothwalls are options to but i quite like the forticloud suite. i forgot to say that despite what people may think of SB, at the end of the day they do try very hard to get things working but the support team are often i feel overwhelmed especially due to all these migrations, im sure again in time this will calm down, cant reccomend Jamie in second line enough hes super helpful as is Nathan. Despite all these issues the SB prices for broadband are still very competitive. so im not saying jump ship at all! -

ive created a list of things that we had to sort with SB after our migration, if you have some of these it may be worth checking they are all functioning after you are done. >ParentPay >Cashless Catering (CRB) >4Matrix >Various Sims Syncs (Parents Evening System, Showmyhomework etc.) >Outlook Connections (Believe this is resolved for all schools now) >O365 Connections >Gapp Connections >Lightspeed Next >Various CDN's not detected by the NS logger (Pinterest, Usethekey, PIXL etc.) >Apple MAC Filtering AD/OD Based. >RDWeb Feeds We are currently using Fortigate Filtering for our BYOD setups and bypassed NS completely as NS requires users to make specific changes on certain Android Devices (See the SB proxy cheat sheet) to have seemless filtering and thats a no go for us as our BSF school and its wireless is rented out after hours, during the holidays as conference centre so the techs are not here to configure phones/tablets etc. Also had to create a specific PAC file i linked earlier as well. -

Take screenshots of your lightspeed setup you may need them good luck and double check you have access to the loggers with support. on a side note anyone had any issues with netsweeper blocking their rd webfeeds internally>? cant see anything in the logger, got it logged with SB but thought i would ask -
Well the thing is Griff we dont know what the exact reasons are, and as customers now we dont know what to believe? but i have a feeling this is going to get uglier, considering the disruption schools have had with SB and the Netsweeper change and the damage to Lightspeeds repuation here and elsewhere to. SB do need to work on their support but i met Dave at BETT and he seemed genuine about wanting to solve the issue in support and with the migrations. Nope going to have to watch and wait.

Thats a shame i think you should of had it from the off Fiza i thought they had granted that to everyone! word of warning though the logger does not capture everything we have found, weve had to inspect the source code of the websites at times to see which CDN's may be getting blocked for certain sites. Best of luck in getting it sorted! -

Figured it out had to sudo bash the cert as the config profile payload and settings would just not work! Funt times! here is the script for anyone else who may have issues with netsweeper on macs Sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustRoot -k "/Library/Keychains/System.keychain" "/private/tmp/certs/ca.crt" -

Anyone had an issue with Macs? ive installed the Root Certificate in the System Keychain both Manually and Trusted it and ive also completed a configuraton payload to deploy said certificate, however my AD users are still getting connection is not private issues when trying to open even google, working with SB on it but wondered if any of the tester schools ran into this issue with Macs? Should note Netsweeper doesnt filter by OU (which lightspeed could do hence the macs were not an issue before) Also i made my own version of the proxy.pac as the SB one wasnt working for me, though working with Jamie from SB managed to add the correct exception for the authportal, this one works by checking you first part of your IP Address as someone suggested earlier function FindProxyForURL(url, host){ var myProxy = "proxylb.schoolsbroadband.net:31280"; var ipSubs = myIpAddress().split("."); if( host == "localhost" || shExpMatch(host, "*.local") || shExpMatch(host, "*authportal") || host == "127.0.0.1" || ipSubs[0] != "10" ) { return "DIRECT; PROXY " + myProxy; } else { return "PROXY " + myProxy + "; DIRECT"; }} -
I am going over to Netsweeper this week, apparently the new filter platform should work better as Lightspeed apparently causes issues with load balancing during high traffic scenarios hence the issues we all faced and why some schools on certain lightspeed filters were less affected than others, whoever is on seven it would be nice to know whos not using WSUS or alike we can only wait and see i guess what the future holds.

Positive chat was had with David, so there may be some light at the end of the tunnel! Carol and David are actually really helpful i feel if there is an issue its always best to maybe speak to them now as i get some spurious answers sometimes from the 1st line guys though i will comment a shout out to Sean and Jamie who were both extremely helpful on seperate days from SBB

The irony is our Kent LEA isnt bad at all for Broadband if a little restrictive in some areas (hence why we are with SBB) and they use lightspeed to serve a lot of kent schools being the big county that it is and we never had such issues with them so not sure why SBB struggle with this so much maybe they have more customers and LS doesnt scale as well either way whatever product is used as long as it works im happy!

Well im waiting for my transfer to the netsweeper platform, to be honest the issue is they need to assign NOC engineers to fix the issue but they also require the same NOC engineers to do the transfers. Way back when in another life i use to run a team of engineers as part of BSF for Capita and so i understand the ITIL processes and service outcome they are progressing but none the less on the other side of that fence as much as fixing the main issue is important if there are workarounds that can be progressed to solve schools issues then thats also a good place to begin until the main fix is forthcoming and were not talking hours of disruption, were talking days i think in that respect there is only so much patience you can have. just to confirm this is not a DDOS attack its the latter 3 of the things i was told so a Mix of Lightspeed Issues/Patch days and their Core/Edge devices under strain, i just spoke to Carole Mawson so hoping that between her and Dave we can get a quick decision regarding the service as i dont think waiting to find out on Monday whether we can teach or email is acceptable not only to my mental health but to the teachers at the school to. as always fun times being a network manager
