With the gimball lock, maybe a controller for a gyroscopic mount of some description?

 

Along the right lines. It certainly needed manouvering though all dimensions!

Yup, the highly venerated Kempston Pro:

Back in the 8 bit gaming days you mostly had Kempston (if you have some money) or more commonly the Quickshot 2:

Although I do recall the Kempston was far more robust than the QSII and I remember having to buy several Quickshots over the years back then.

I had (still have) hundreds of games for my C64 - I used to get through joysticks at a fair rate. The microswitched ones always died pretty quickly, especially as a great many games thought that 'waggling the joystick' was a good gameplay idea (try explaining that to today's kids without blushing). My favourite stick ever was the Cheetah Bug - that too died eventually. Had a ton of Quickshots - they were cheap to be fair, £10 dahn the market!
