Done plenty of times.

Yes this type of question comes up quite frequently. A quick search will turn them up.

How many staff and students are you supporting?

To be honest, from what you have said so far you are probably on the well-staffed side of average on that size site.

There are many with only 1 tech or 1 plus a part-timer.

1 NM and 1 senior tech, we are an all-through independent (nursery to 6th form) on a large spread out site so it is a struggle sometimes - we used to have 1 NM, 1 Assistant NM, 2 tech when we were two separate sites and for a couple of years following merging onto one site.

700 kids/110 staff, about 500 PCs/laptops, plus IWB/projector in every classroom, and all the usual stuff (servers, wireless etc)

We have me (Network Manager), Two technicians (One of which is shared with Site Support, so make that 1 1/2) We look after around 600 workstations and laptops, about 50 print queues and some other assorted hardware.

We have 1200 students (Lower Schoo) and about 250 in the 6th Form.

We have about 160 staff.

Me, Myself and I.... Secondary school of 1k pupils, 160 staff, 400 workstations(of which 60 IWB's), 100 laptops, 130 ipads, 100 chromebooks, servers, switches, wireless and all the rest of it! I'm also only a ICT Technician they made the NM redundant...

O/T:

...they made the NM redundant...

In a secondary! Yikes! I know you are there now, but is there some other provision to take up the slack that the Network Manager left? (External contractors?) I ask because there are rumblings about cost cutting here and I get the nasty feeling that I might be in the firing line...

I think it's also important to note how much work you outsource.

We have a light-ish staff on site but then get "experts" in to do work as and when it's needed, such as virtualization projects, wifi upgrades etc.

I think this has as much bearing on the number of staff required as how many students....

No other provision set in place at the moment I've un-willingly took over the responsibilities, who else is there to do it? I've asked for help and they have got contractors in to do some switch upgrades but that's about it no other work gets outsourced! I've asked for my job description to be amended and obviously pay adjusted but I just get shut down.. (professional development) so I'm a bit stuck atm and have been put in this unfortunate position.

One Network Manager and oh yeah, that's it... I do everything.

12 Servers, 250 PC's, 100 Chromebooks plus other bits and bobs.

We have 1 external support contract for MIS and thats it. When I said I do everything I meant it; Systems, Networking, Cabling, break duties.

Same, about 550 devices including servers etc. Quite a small school, so often very busy but would like a spare pair of hands just to have time for other projects I have in mind.

Pretty tough going if you don't have a NM and you're the only IT Technician. I'd probably speak to them about it.

NM and Tech, Secondary School with 950 pupils 80 staff and a Six Form. 700 computers and 40 laptops. Used to be one NM and Three techs , I joined after the other three left. We are part of an academy and can call on outside help if need be.

The point about external support is a good one. It could make all the difference to support levels.

350 pupil junior here, 70 student laptops, 20 teacher laptops, 45 desktops.

1 x part-time tech with phone support from an external company and one 2 hour visit once a month

Agreed. We have a team of 5 here, with about 800 computers, but we don't outsource anything IT related. We support & install, phones, CCTV, copiers, wifi, etc and support 6 primary schools and supply broadband to about 15 primary schools.

Same applies to the type of equipment: schools that runs thousands of chromebooks or thin clients will require far less support per unit than those with windows or mac clients.
