Your work email title?

Hi,

 

I have the opportunity to give myself an email alias, but I'm a bit stuck as to what I should use...

 

What seems the most professional/least likely to be misheard/mistyped etc...

 

I've put a poll up, but feel free to post your own.

 

I'd rather it stay short and snappy, try not to use hyphens/underscores/dots, so I like the first two options - but I'd also want to differentiate between myself and the ICT coordinator if they require an alias as well...

We have a generic ictsupport@ that both of us can access and that we give out as the primary point of contact for suppliers, but otherwise we just use our normal e-mail addresses which is SurnameInitial@

We use ICTNS@... for our team email. The rest of the team wouldn't let me use networkgod@...

 

If it's just for you, you could use: networkmanager@, ICTadmin@, IT-tech@.

If it's a group thing, then: ICT-support@, fixmypc@.

we use ictsupport and ittech as distribution groups and I also have admin and postmaster sent to me but that's mainly spam - my actual email is my initials which goes out to suppliers and whatnot

I have a changerequest@ email that people send website white/black list requests to, but other than that all correspondence comes to me.

We have one email account that is given to random suppliers that we keep an eye on sporadically but is 90% spam, we have one that is a group of the IT people, used internally to contact the IT bods and used to sign up to services so anyone in the future can get at them and then our personal ones that. Trusted suppliers are either given the group or our personal ones.

Even as lone tech, I used ictsupport@ for the following reasons:

 

1. Nobody is capable of spelling my surname correctly. While I had aliases set up for the most common mis-spellings, there are no guarantees stuff gets to me

2. Planning ahead should I leave... nothing changes. The new post-holder would still have this email registered with suppliers and users.

3. I was also the school librarian and used librarian@ for stuff to do that role.... and when I was doing the marketing role as well, I used publicity@ . It made passing the jobs on very easy indeed.

 

I did have my own proper personal school email too.

[email protected] is a bit too presumptive since in the immortal words of Connor MacLeod "There Can Be Only One". You don't get that title without an Epic sword battle in 1980's New York.

I mainly use the ict@ for one of my schools across all 3 as its more convenient to just check 1 address. Unfortunately one school uses a supplier with a rubbish email system that won't forward automatically and you have to beg the suppliers to make changes to. At least they've corrected my firstname/surname after a few years; though I still show up to others as the site manager, who has the same initials.

 

My email signature contains my name and full title of:

 

High Emperor of the Network, Defender of the Domain, Lord of the LAN, Master of the Servers and Wielder of the One True GPO.

Shouldn't really be anything on there that you aren't happy with them seeing though, after all if you're planning to delete all emails before leaving that could be seen as destruction of data etc.

 

And what stops them just restoring any deleted content?

It is for work, but the LEA one is ridiculously long and the choice from our new supplier is very generic, uses numbers and dots and has nothing to do with the school name!

Quite a few with 'support' - just a bit worried they might actually expect support haha! - Maybe I'll have a few for whoever is mailing me - sarcasmwithawrysmile@ or haveyoueventurnediton@, better yet turnitoffandonbeforeyouemailme@ and for those 'special' teachers we all have in our schools youwantitallsetupforalessonrightnow@ and a CC for youcouldntgivemesomenotice@

I'm probably being too cynical.

 

Emails have a habit of being mis-interpreted. Who knows when something I've said years ago that was meant to mean one thing has been read to mean something completely different. I'd be long gone and there would be no way to clarify what was meant by email trail x. Much better to have personal accounts and aliases which can be updated when technicians come and go.

 

I log work on the helpdesk, so if the future technician is struggling, they can look through call notes for answers. There should be no reason for any future IT Technician to access past emails on my account.

Oh Dave! No, you cannot ass-u-me! I've always rewritten whole sentences to avoid that word, since an area manager back in my old life used it to prove it makes an ASS out of U and ME. Funny what sticks with you over the years....

it@ is an internal distribution list (that also includes the ticket system) - it rejects external emails.

 

sysadmin@ or petebett20XX are my "I have to give you an email address but I don't really want to talk to you until I buy something and you prove you're not twerps".

 

Then there's the real email address for people I (usually) want to talk to.

I do a similar thing for a similar reason as elsiegree. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick - it's not so someone could read my emails if I left, it's more so my successor wouldn't have to go around changing the registered email on 1001 online accounts and so suppliers etc can keep emailing as they always would to the new person - just direct the email address to the new persons mailbox. I still use my personal address for most things.

 

For leaving emails I'd do what I did when someone covered for me for 18 months - move anything useful or important into a seperate PST and leave them that. And then my mailbox would be emptied.

 

I have around 15 email aliases as the lone IT person here. But the main ones I use are networkmanager@ and itsupport@
