As one of the biggest wheel of time fans you'll find anywhere, I promise you it improves massively in season 2 and again in season 3 it becomes genuinely essential tv.  Truly awesome stuff.

I only tend to watch seasons where there are comedians i like, i've missed the last 2 but this one has Jason Mantzoukas in and i'm hooked after the first episode!

Then my work here is done.

 

S1 had much worldbuilding to do and was blighted by covid restrictions and Mat's actor leaving midway through production.

Things are much better in 2 and 3.

Finished watching Bodkin on Netflix the other night. It's slow to start (but with a few good scenes) and only really takes off in the last few episodes.
It's a bit of a marmite show and some may like it and some may not. I ranked it as 'ok'. The production values were (mostly) good, but I think the directing and editing could have been a lot better and vastly improved it.

This was one we didn't get along with and gave up pretty early on.

 

We've been enjoying Annika this week, though.  Series 2 is on whatever UKTV play now is.

It's an enjoyable murder of the week show and the main character's tendency to confide with the audience directly and share literary references is entertaining.

Endor season 2

 

The last few episodes are amazing.. real edge of seat stuff and it feels like star wars. I watched the first few episodes and wasn't bothered about finishing it but wow.. so glad I did. 

 

Need to watch rogue one again now.

I'm finding all of the Star Wars and most of the Marvel shows to be ponderous affairs. I'd rather have fewer episodes without the scenes or even entire episodes that seem to be designed solely to pad out the episode count. This seems to apply to a lot of streaming shows. The last season of Reacher felt padded, though the finale was fun. We'd just watched an episode of Citadel: Honey Bunny (also way too many eps and probably better as a movie or with half the eps) before it, which meant that we'd changed the language to Hindi and subs to English. Amazon remembers the last language you used rather than the fact that you prefer subs to dubs, which led to accidental hilarity when Reacher has speaking in Hindi for the recap.  The dubbing into Hindi seemed better than when it happens the other way around though this might be because i don't speak Hindi.

Out and out one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a long time.

Finished Paradise on Disney+. Ep 7 was incredible and the rest were generally good.

 

Also finished Dept Q on Netflix. Trailer has salty language and some violence.

 

 

On one hand, you've seen it before: Troubled cop, team of underdogs, but on the other it pulls off some great twists (stick to the end of the first episode, like Paradise) and has a nice dark humour to it. Well worth a look.

Finished North of North on Netflix. A young Inuk woman realises that she wants more from life than the expected get husband, have kids path she has taken and determines to make changes in her life. Gentle 1/2 hour Canadian comedy; if you liked Kim's Convenience you may like this. 

 

Also finished Wheel of Time on Prime. The penultimate episode was a stonker, though (sorry @ICTDirect_Dave!) I find Rand comes across like a sulky teenager to me, which dampens my enjoyment of the show.

Just caught up with The Sixth Commandment on iPlayer. Timothy Spall is excellent as always, as is Ann Reid. Has some disturbing scenes, made more so by the fact of it being a true story.

That's fair, but it's also pretty accurate of Rand's character at this point.

 

Speaking of WoT.  Our save the show campaign passed 190,000 signatures which is impressive and our billboard campaign has been going great guns!

This truck has been driving around Sydney for the last week, stopping at landmarks and outside the Supernova comic con.

 

And this monster billboard will be here all month and greets studio employees as they hop off the interstate at Culver City on their way to the office

I finally finished The Sopranos. Started watching them for the first time during lockdown, didn't finish them. Started again towards the end of last year and finished them all this time.

Just started watching Asterix and the Big Fight on Netflix with my son. The animation is maybe a little basic but it matches with Uderzo’s drawing style really nicely. The first episode deals with the backstory of Obelix falling into the magic potion as a child and is an adaptation of ‘How Obelix fell into the magic potion when he was a boy’, with a few changes but none which are detrimental to the story.

 

In any case, it was a good first episode and my son asked to watch the next episode straight away, which is usually a good sign for him.

FEAR THE WALKING DEAD **SPOILERS**

 

Catching up with the latest (and hopefully last) season of 'Fear The Walking Dead'. We'd forgotten all about it as for a long time it was on Prime (I think) to purchase.

 

As usual the first couple of seasons were OK, but went downhill quickly... I mean it was always the poor relation, but man now it really stinks worse than the dead (I imagine)!

 

Honestly, we've worked out that Madison is actually a walking apocalypse all on her own... a literal representation of Death riding in on the pale horse, everything she touches turns to excrement... everywhere she goes ends up destroyed... and nearly everyone she comes into contact with (apart from the main characters obviously) dies. There's no 'I wonder what's going to happen next?' as you know wherever she turns up in that episode will be a smoking ruin, full of corpses and zombies by the end...

 

The character arcs are preposterous, non-sensical, laughable and mostly unbelievable, the forced jeopardy in every situation was written by a bunch of people saying OK, so here's the scene... 'what's the worst thing that could possibly happen... OK, we'll do that... and then what's the worst thing that could happen after that...'  I mean, I get it... the actual Walking Dead felt like a snooze-fest for most of the last few seasons with nothing really happening in each episode... but make it believable, not just added in for the sake of it...

 

Characters, even after spending years avoiding the dead (who can do no more than amble along noisily like a toddler) still walk around as if in a daze, getting attacked by surprise... the fights and the falls and are so slapstick they might as well all be running through the woods looking back and tripping over a branch, they're that obvious (**SPOILER** Madison getting hit in the head with a shovel) and the 'surprise' reveals have all been called by me or the OH. Every situation is prolonged by not actually shooting the protagonist (and making sure they're dead), which I think in a Zombie apocalypse you just would... you wouldn't negotiate, or 'wait and see' what happens (because you know you've just made an enemy that will hunt you down for the rest of the episode/season/run)...

 

The latest episode we watched, my OH turned to me and said 'I thought Madison needed an oxygen cylinder', she had not even touched one all episode (she had in fact been running about on-screen for most of it)... **SPOLIER** Oh, and the surprise daughter...? Called by the OH 3 episodes ago...

 

This last season is mostly more of the same, but with a lot of 'I thought you were dead'... 'no, I thought YOU were dead' as all the old characters are re-introduced in each episode... and the fact they all keep ending up in the same place... or finding their way back... or catching up with the people that wronged them...? No.

Just got around to finally watch Andor series 1. I'm usually a big advocate for a longer series with more episodes, but if there was ever a series that could do with cutting down, this is it. There was so much slow back and forth between characters, retracing story beats which had already been covered several times, it felt like it took forever to get to the 'main events'. 8-10 episodes would've been the sweet spot IMO as 12 was a little too much. 

 

It also felt like sometimes they didn't know how to end the episode, with awkward fade outs or a segment ending with a random cut to a character just doing jack all.

 

However, did enjoy it overall, it had great action set pieces and gave us a good look at the 'regular' life of people in the Star Wars universe during my favourite era. I was hooked all the way through the prison segments. 

 

On to series 2!
