Bit late to the party, but I finally got around to Adolescence on Netflix. The first episode was incredibly powerful but I felt the other three could not live up to that and, whilst always incredibly well acted, never managed to live up to it. I'm not sure the insights into incel culture were particularly "eye-opening" and would have appreciated more of a sense of closure. Hard to say more without spoilers. Worth a watch though.

The Sandman S02E03. After decades waiting to see "A Midsummer Night's Dream" adapted for the screen I guess it was always going to be hard to match my expectations but squidging it into a flashback totally failed to do it justice.

 

It's a shame for the ladies involved and, selfishly, for fans of Neil Gaiman's work that he allegedly appears to be such a bad 'un leading to multiple books of the source material having to be condensed into one season.

Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin (Apple TV+)

 

 

Short lived "Pitch Perfect" spin-off that was so well hidden on Paramount in the US when it came out a couple of years ago that I only heard about it a few months ago.

 

So-so musical comedy that has its moments and a great supporting cast, especially Jameela Jamil who gets some outrageous outfits and an outrageous "German" accent, but Adam Devine is a very Marmite actor and I'm not a fan.

Just finishing The Guest on iPlayer - it's been ok. Watched The Assasin on Amazon - that was good. New season of The Diplomat is due soon.

The Hack on ITV-X looks really interesting (starts on the 24th) 

ITV-X picked up a lot of cool stuff over the summer. If you're into conspiracy thrillers, Rabbit Hole is worth checking out.

Finally finished The Expanse on Prime Video. Just managed to see the first 3 seasons before they yanked it, but they may be back on again now. If you're into SF and haven't watched this, get doing so. Admittedly it took us three tries to get into it, so give it 3 or 4 eps. Probably the greatest SF show since Babylon 5.

Pity it got cancelled, though at least the main characters end up with good enough "wrap ups" - shame a new plot introduced in the final season doesn't get very far. Guess I'm going to have to read the books to find out what happens next!

 

Also, Mme LeMarchand's cosy crime kick saw us watch the first season of Darby and Joan on U. Greta Scaatchi plays a British woman who goes to Australia to find out why her husband died there when he was supposed to be in Spain. She teams up with a disgraced (but probably innocent) cop played by Bryan Brown and the just happen to be around when crimes happen. OK for a cosy watch. The second season (also available) seems likely to centre more on Bryan Brown's mystery.

Slowly working my way through Black Mirror S7, which is a marked improvement on S6 so far. Watched "Hotel Reverie" last night. It's about an actress stuck in a remake of an old movie that she can only escape by getting to the end of the film, though she may not want to, and loved it. Reminded me of "San Junipero".

Finished Hostage on Netflix. Had been looking forward to this for a while and it didn't disappoint. A bit far-fetched in parts but kept all 3 adults in the house gripped.

Just watched the first couple (well, fell asleep during the second due to sleepy) episodes of Pluribus last night, and it's very, very good. Not sure if it's sci-fi, sci-fi horror, satire, comedy or what yet.
The TLDR is that a virus has struck the entire planet (after an alien signal tells us how to make a DNA change and it escapes the lab) turning everyone into an interconnected species and making everyone very content and happy.
The protagonist, a writer of romantic fiction, finds out that only herself and 13 others on the entire planet are immune to the virus. The rest of humanity is not hostile towards them at all, but do want to make them like themselves. It's very watchable, and the writing top notch. If you have Apple TV then I suggest you give it a shot.

I've just cancelled my Apple TV as I finished Slow Horses... damn.

 

I'm enjoying Landman on Parmount+ .. Billy Bob is such a great actor.
Trigger Point is just awful but enjoyable

Revival is fun but forgettable

Speaking of Taskmaster, we're catching up on the current series and it is bloomin' fantastic!  More laugh out loud moments in this series than there has been in quite some time. The cast have the ideal mix of characters and chemistry and it's been a joy to see Preston's rather brutal sense of humour on screen!

Just finished Harlan Coben's Lazarus on Amazon.
It's very meh, and 75% of dialogue is delivered in an angry\shouty voice. It could have been much, much better.

The Coben adaptions are always fairly middle of the road with plots that you should usually have figured out by the middle of the series.  The Netflix ones have an established cast they recycle into new roles and they're better actors than the majority of those in Lazarus (Bill Nighy aside).  Even though it was the same production team as the netflix show. it being on amazon meant they needed a new cast which made it suffer i think.

 

Still, it was fairly enjoyable halloween content.

Last night I finished the first three episodes of Critical Role's Mighty Nein series on Amazon Prime.

Like their previous effort, The Legend of Vox Machina, this is a very adult cartoon, with gore and swearing throughout.

 

It might just be the best fantasy show of the year too!  With eight episodes, each running to 45 minutes, they've more time to devote to character building and plot development and for all the silliness that ensues, it's an engaging tale, a brilliant start and I cant wait to watch the next five episodes!

I'm rewatching Fallout in preparation for the second series.  Not going back to watch Stranger things as I sort of remember what happened at the end of the last series... Kate Bush saved them all.
