mrbios Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) CA Arcserve backup and CA Unified data protection. UDP is brilliant, less feature packed than veeam, but a fair bit cheaper. It's been insanely reliable, tested restores etc and it hasn't missed a beat from day 1. We were also the first people in the country to get it (it was released last April and we had someone come in and install it for us on release day...even had a picture taken mid install and a tweet from arcserve themselves (I actually lie, before the first patch there were one or two issues, but since that patch 9 months ago i haven't had a single issue) Arcserve backup has been reliable too, using it to backup our data to an overland storage 8 tape autoloader. Apart from a fault with the first autoloader device we had that's also been faultless, i test restores once a month and that's been backing up happily without issue for the past year. Lightyears better than the utter **** of backup exec we had before. Glad to see the back of those days, i now feel 100% confident that in the event of a disaster i could turn to our SMT and say "Don't worry, your data is safe" EDIT: Going to replace our old LTO5 tapes with LTO6 this year too, think our tapes are long overdue replacement. Also, out of curiousity, how much is veeam per socket this year? Edited March 10, 2015 by mrbios
clockend25 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 DPM. Though my attempts to get the de-duplication support working properly ended in failure, so i'm going to rebuild the server from the ground up in a final attempt to sort it.

Tall_Paul Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 VEEAM here. Brilliant product and service. We use Disk-Disk-Tape and I've ran a DR test at one of our local service providers. They got 4 of my core servers back (which was the test) with no issues whatsoever.

As soon as Veeam supported tape back in Version 7 we dumped BE. The tape features in Veeam aren't a match for BE but it does work, we rarely have issues with 96 VM's backed up. Have restored many items from tape including individual mail items in a few instances.

Our current server environment is in a nice air conditioned room. We do have a 'house' within the school grounds that could have a room adapted to house a server but with tight budgets I don't see any request for that going down at all well. I could host a server in my house but I don't think that's a workable solution for various reasons. How do other schools using this seemingly excellent solution work around this? Yay, look at my awesome shiny NEW backup software, BE was so rubbish. BUT All I see is 12.5 and 2010 mentioned all the time, 7 and 5 years old. It's no great surprise it's not so good with your new virtual solutions.... Still, 2012 was a terrible UI and the move from Backup Job centric to Server centric was a bad idea. BE 2012, The support left a lot to be desired, terrible GUI Interface and I just don't know why they changed the interface to the server centric it was good enough left alone it wasn't rocket science to use and it worked well. I guess Veeam could be classed as a next generation backup?? We haven't been without our problems but have only had a hand full but as @eyetea mentions the support is brilliant and the product works. 1

KK20 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 we use backupchain for our 3 host cluster (12 virtual servers). I have performed a bare metal restore on one host without issue (I did evict/rejoin anyway), I have also performed a guest "clone" (for upgrade testing) without issue and performed file recovery without issue. Speed is adequate and backup is performed to NAS drives (openfiler array shared as iscsi).
fiza Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Any choices other than BE 2014 for physical file server backups? Its expensive compared to something like BackupAssist. I have Veeam for virtual but need something for our physical file server.
