I'm about to compile my mid year report for SMT and found this from my 1999 document:

 

Outstanding Work

Convert all computers in the 6th form block from the Windows 95 operating system to NT4.

Create a disk image of a typical computer from each of the main computer rooms.

Continue to develop the Internet Site.

Update all computers in 1B3 from NT Service Pack 3 to NT Service Pack 4.

Yep, I'd have been in Year 9 at that point.

 

How big was your network then? I think even by 2001 when I left school ours only had one, possibly two suites max.

Yep, we had two suites of 30ish computers and a few ad-hoc machines around classrooms and ONE laptop...

In 1999 I was working for a major insurance company on mainframe systems panicking about the millennium bug. Fortunately, our programmers had done a pretty good job and there wasn't as much to do as feared. We were just starting to move over to PCs. We had no remote access and few of us had a mobile phone. I was summoned on call by bleeper and had to drive in to work in the middle of the night if I couldn't tell the operators what to do by phone because there was no remote access.

 

The company only got rid of its card punches about 3 years earlier... they were used for output. One went to the science museum. Our failsafe site had to keep their punch card machines because 2 other companies they supported still used them.

I was in Kosovo in 99!

I didn't strat in my first school until I got out in 2000. We had Windows 98se over 2 IT suites and some machines scattered around the school. I could only dream of having NT4.0

I did migrate us to Windows 2000 the year after though which made life sooo much easier.

No one had laptops!

I was 1 year into my first IT job working for the Ministry of Defence. I had gone in with such high hopes of working on cutting edge IT equipment and was met by a row of green screen terminals. I was so disappointed!!

Back in 99 I'd have been completing the move of our main IT suites into a new building while still sulking that the planned IT Office we should have had in there was reduced to being expected to share the librarians stock room (which she promptly filled) so had to remain in our existing location between 2 classrooms in another building... and I'm still in the same office.

sounds much like my time with the MOD. I miss my bleeper sometimes. Most of the time it didn't go off but I always thought it was quite exciting to be paged in the middle of the night and have to drive to work to save the day!

@fiza it was somewhat less exciting when the it started bleeping in the middle of the night because the battery was low. I can remember ripping the batteries out and hurling the thing on the floor about 2am on one occasion before stumping back to bed!

At that point, I'm not sure we had proper College Internet access, it may have still been a single computer on dial-up, or just been on ISDN 2 Internet from RM. We'd have fairly recently obtained Technology College status, so had about £100,000 to spend on IT equipment - those were the days.

In 1999 I was working in facilities management, running AIX and HP-UX machines. Just like elsiegee and fiza we were madly patching o/s's to handle the millennium bug. The beeper was a PIA; one of the clients (a major retailer) wouldn't allow us to change the crappy backup software on their machine and if you were on call that week, you knew you were going to be paged. I eventually forced the issue though. I went on holiday for three weeks and when I came back I discovered there hadn't been a successful backup for 16 days. There was a two week tape cycle, so every tape was corrupt. The newest backup available was about 6 months old.

 

I was also "celebrating" 20 years in IT.

Working with Novell Netware as my main NOS, Windows 98SE workstations, implementing Groupwise for email. NT4 server for Intranet, removing HP switches that no one ever used but previous NM thought was the way ahead. Millenium bug testing and being allowed to take leave only in term time

I was starting my GCSEs in 1999, but was also running the network in the technology department - 20 P1s initially connected via 10Base2 then eventually via a 10BaseT on a donated Cisco switch, connecting back to a server running Linux with Samba. Started on Windows 95, then upgraded to Windows NT 4.0. Also moved the server over to a 2 server setup running NT Server 4.0 as well.

 

Worked more reliably than the rest of the school's computers, which were a mix of Compaqs running Windows 95 machines with Novell Netware and Macs - one room of Mac Classics and Pluses, one room of Performa 6200s!!

In 99 I was working in the jail. I remember the hogmanay night and our Depute Governor wanted me to work night-shift in case the Millenium Bug got our machines! It was loads extra money for one shift and paid my holiday later that year! Result! Edited February 26, 2015 by ButterflyMoon

I was working on a project in partnership with Siemens to design,implement and roll out countrywide new letter sorting equipment in Royal Mail, then training postal workers and managers on the operational and safety aspects of the kit.

I was in my first IT job, with a NM who insisted on having the mouse balls cleaned every week! I think it was 3.1 changing over to 95 as the year progressed. Before that I'd been part timing around my children, anything from pot wash to selling "interesting" hardware to army wives! lol

Just finished Uni and managed to get a job at a scotch egg factory, arhh the good old days.
