Sofas - Where to buy

as mentioned in other threads, moving in with my other half in the next couple of months.

 

Any of you wonderful lot got any recommendations for sofa companies? know all about SCS DFS etc but there may be a few hidden gems out there.

Sofa King in Northampton is usually fairly good, well worth a look and not too far away from you.

Don't rule out charity shops I have had some good furniture from my local ones. Especially Age UK who have furniture warehouses dotted around.

I'll second that. We recently bought a nearly new sofa from the Heart Foundation shop for a fraction of what it would have cost us new.

I've worked for DFS Delivery, and wouldn't touch their furniture with a barge pole.

I received my new sofa last weekend from a little shop near me (Portsmouth) that orders sofas to order and they are custom made. You can pick the style, material of both the frame and the cushions. Got a big comfy corner sofa and foot stall for £700. Didn't fancy paying DFS/SCS etc for the same thing but 3 times as much. Look on facebook for local furniture shops, there are a couple near me that sell last years models from DFS/SCS for 1/3 of the price.

I bought a sofa from DFS two years ago. The sofa is great but had a lot of hassle.

 

First problem was that I ordered the sofa to be made and delivered by a particular date, this did not happen. This gave us a big problem as we had got rid of our old sofa in preparation of the new one coming. Phoned up the shop and went nuts at them, so they had to provide us with a temporary sofa as my partner was pregnant at the time and wasn't having her sit on the floor.

 

Second problem was when ordering the sofa myself and my partner noticed the model on the order form didn't match the sofa we wanted. When queried the sales man he said it would be ok and wrote the model number on the form. When the sofa did turn up, it had a pattern on it which we didn't want or order. Phoned the shop to complain, they tried to get us to take this sofa temporarily until the correct one was made. Wasn't having any of that, if it got damaged whilst I had it they would no doubt charge me for this. Told them to leave the old temp sofa until it got sorted. I found it surprising they got it wrong as myself and my partner queried it in the shop when ordering and plus they fact we were sitting on the sofa we wanted when making the order.

 

Last issue was because they mucked up we had to go back to the shop to re-sign paper work. Whilst waiting on the incompetent sales man to get his paper work together my partner and I observed the managers of the shop strutting around like they were gods. We also saw a couple of sales men chasing each other around in the car park like they were kids in a play ground.

 

DFS - nice sofa's but incompetent staff.

 

Ironically when my daughter was born the initials of her name spell SCS

I got a handmade chesterfield from one of a few companies in Manchester which is ace and can be made to measure for about half the price of the main shops. I also got an amazing one of a kind patchwork sofa from eBay (new) for £700 - other places were at least a grand so I wouldn't rule out eBay. And of course going local can be good.

Looks can be deceiving! If I had a criticism, it's that the back isn't high enough - but that seems to be the case with a lot of sofas. We have the chaise lounge the other side so both the back and side are against a wall, and it's large enough for two to snuggle on just that part. (You can also do one per "arm"). Also works well with one reading etc. while the other sits on the "settee" part for gaming. Easy to convert to bed mode, which also gets used for movie nights when one/both bonus daughter/s visit so that everyone gets to put their feet up.

 

Plus, popular with the cat!

I've had my DFS sofa for 6 years now and it's been fine and taken a lot of hammering!! I like to jump on it and almost tip the recliner bits over. We ordered ours over the phone and used product numbers off the website, so everything was correct.

 

I bought our conservatory sofa second hand from Gumtree... that's a DFS one too and I've had no issues with it

 

If you are short on funds get a secondhand one... otherwise go brand spanking new and 0% interest free credit for 4 years!

Been quite....lucky with money so we have some spare to play with. Will probably avoid any credit stuff etc until we have our mortgage and everything finalised.

The wife and I bought one from Wren Kitchens in their winter sale, we spotted it a couple of months before and after a good deal of searching could not find anything anywhere near as comfortable. There's a 7 week lead time on getting it delivered, so we should be getting it at half term.

 

I don't know how many stores they have around but there's one in MK in Knowlhill near Homebase.

We went to Multiyork - Inspirational Sofas and Interiors | Multiyork

 

You pay more but you get a personal service. We also got a cabinet from there. The OH parents also received great service form another branch when they ordered.

 

With Multiyork, you can buy new covers in 20 year time, they store all the patterns for their sofas.

We have just bought a very nice G-Plan suite and after shopping around on-line, we got £350 off it!

The 2 leather sofas we bought from DFS were rubbish and became unusable (Uncomfortable) after 2 years (just after the upholstery warranty expired). Sherborne furniture is pretty good, (that's what we have now and they're so much better than the DFS ones) there's probably a local independent that sells them in your area (made in Bradford). G-Plan has always been quality and I had a good experience with a couple of sofas from Multiyork many years ago.

Went around the town over the wekened looking for sofas, best one at a good price we could find was one from Ikea (surprisingly comfortable) brown leather 3 seater, £400. will probably order that.
