If the machines are running 10S as they originally suggested, then it can only run the web apps the same as Chromebooks.

Also one less thing to worry about needing to have updates applied for.

Can't you install the Office apps from the Store in S mode though?

Well, technically you can take Windows 10S out of Store only mode... just you can't put it back into Store only mode.

Anyone struggling getting the bios passwords, If you get it wrong 3 times it gives you a code you can use here https://bios-pw.org/ so you can get in and change it.

is anybody putting on their data information sheet that there is an expectation that these are used for School learning, be it remote or possibly from sep - for homework learning....

We got our order of Chromebooks in at the end of last week, along with Chrome upgrade licenses for each of them for our domain. That's only a couple of days after our order was placed. Unopened Dell 3100s, so no prior config or filtering and they should fit in nicely with our existing Dell 3400s. Now tagged and enrolled into our G Suite.

We'd already handed out some brand new Chromebooks that we just happened to have ordered in in March. With only a few weeks of term left, it may not be worth trying to get them swapped over. May as well try and keep shiny any now not needing to be loaned out.

It's also likely that the Password.bin file for the social care laptops will also work on the Y10 laptops.

We had a DfE branded, cut down version of https://docs.umbrella.com/deployment-umbrella/docs/cisco-umbrella-chromebook-client-deployment-guide but we can only get the App to install (if we're lucky!) and not the Extension. As a result, the filtering doesn't seem to filter.

On the Win10 machines it's all good to go and working out of the box.

Im just wondering how the students will login to the laptops if they registered to the dfe mdm Intune account.

An email arrived a few minutes ago giving me individual BIOS passwords for the devices that arrived this morning.

Now the missing router(s)..?

It's all a bit of a shambles.

I've put my order in for 13 laptops and 4 router this morning from the DfE

Also picked up 18 from the local authority for children with social workers.

Management are telling me these laptops from both the DfE and local authority are for the children to keep permanently.

Is that correct?

That's the basic idea, but the Chromebooks need to be joined to a GSuite domain to allow installation of the filtering software (which I still haven't got to install). The laptops are fine "out of the box" and come with shortcuts to online versions of Office apps, presumably on the grounds that "MS" schools will have the facility for access to that. Otherwise they have Chrome.

You'll have to ask the others why they're installing stuff/reimaging - the way I see it is that they're for the kids who don't have access to home devices. We don't install software for those that do.

I think its that there's 3 different branches (I might be wrong on this, it's just based on what I've seen at work and here/ANME).

1: Laptops requested by care workers - bought/owned by the council. Schools don't have any access to change.

2: Laptops ordered by academies - bought/owned by the academy. Not sure about this but they might be vanilla, and if not they can get admin passwords direct from the supplier. (Not an academy so less sure about this)

3: Laptops ordered by the LA for maintained schools - bought by the LA and passed along to schools (schools technically own them - I think) but because the LA bought them admin password requests have to come from the right person at the LA.

There may be more options that I'm not aware of.

The individualized passwords DON'T apply. Getting ready to enter the password to get into the BIOS and I find it blank.

Pretty much what I've done - just sitting in our office waiting to hand out now. However, I have requested the passwords as I know we're going to be asked to install Office on them - best do that before they go out the door I think. Long term, after the Intune licensing expires in October - don't know just yet.
