This kind of thing usually requires software to be installed on the PC which interacts with the remote PC doing the controlling. Things such as Impero, GotMyPC, TeamViewer etc. are likely candidates. Can you not just look at the running processes/programs on the PC and see which one is in use? Andrew

Hang on.....i've just re-read what you originally wrote. I think I understand what you are tryimg to do.... Why dont you just redirect the Desktop & Start Menu icon folders to a central location on your server and then place all of your shortcuts in there? They will be automatically updated on the PCs when a user logs on... Andrew

We use GPP, as stated above, for this sort of stuff and it works well. User Config > Preferences > Windows Settings > Files Pretty simples..... Andrew

I completely agree. Smoothwall support has been very poor recently. I used to deal with them regularly in another school about 2 years ago and have just recently started dealing with them again in my current school and have noticed a definite drop in service in that time. We used to get quick call backs or email replies it now takes days or you dont even get a reply some times. Not the level of service it used to be! We went to the Microsoft Windows 8 Tech day in Leeds yesterday and whilst I was wanting to be impressed, I wasn't! Microsoft seem to have added way too much complexity to Win 8 for Admins and, potentially, for users! If this is their attempt to compete with Apple/iPads etc. then, in my opinion, it may fail! I agree, the whole thing s a right royal PITA! We have problems which are pretty similar to yours..... It works 98% of the time and is generally good for students who log-in, use the computer, log-off and go to another classroom. No bother. The problems seem to hit staff members who log in to a computer, use it then lock it and go to another classroom to teach. Then we get the 'The printers aren't working' cry...... I have considered forcing everyone to log off when they are finished and not allowing them to lock the PC and then go to another, but I just know that will be a world of hurt as well because some staff will not log-off and instead just leave their computer unlocked and open for anyone to use!!! I just wish there was a solid, working solution for printer mapping - especially for schools!!! Andrew

Their top-up/SIM activation/payment service has been non-existent all over this weekend and still isn't working this morning!! They appear to have experienced an 'outage' caused by O2, but dont seem very able to recover quickly. I was going to join, but been unable to activate my SIM so may just throw it in the bin instead... Anyone else had any problems? Andrew

We have a QNAP 24TB NAS box attached to a couple of our file servers (Server 2008R2) via iSCSI. In general they work ok, but a few times a week we get users reporting problems when saving files (especially MS Office files) saying they are getting a 'File already in use' message (the file isn't actually in use by any other user). I have checked all of the usual stuff like permissions, file ownership etc....and nothing obvious appears to be wrong. I have read somewhere that this kind of error is something to do with NAS servers, but cannot find the article. Does anyone know what might be causing this issue? Thanks_Andrew

Check which wireless channel they are on. Kindles will only connect to certain channels as far as I remember. "The Kindle was designed in the USA and so uses only the US Wi-Fi channels one to 11." Andrew

I've just done the CCNA course over a year at a local college - one night a week for 3 hours + home reading/practice. There is a VAST amount of information to remember/understand!!! I wouldn't waste your money on a boot camp. I cannot see how anyone could absorb all of that in a weekend/week - impossible in my opinion! My advice would be to buy the books, read them and start doing the labs/tests. Then spend a few quid and get something like the Testking series and start doing those. You can do most of the 'practical' stuff using the Packet Tracer software and if you are able to get any 'hands-on' with some Cisco switches/routers that would also help (I even considered buying a couple of secondhand Cisco switches/routers off eBay to practice on, but didn't in the end). When I saw the programme and heard the circumstances I wondered if some of the Head Teachers involved weren't accepting some kind of commission or a 'back-hander' from the companies involved? The amounts of money being paid certainly mean that several people could get rich from the deals with plenty left over to actually pay for the equipment! A
