iPads - just. Seeking a walk through on set up
speckytecky replied to speckytecky's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
That's Student use. As we are an EBD school that puzzled me straight off!! -
This ties in with my recent experience. Our filter at SWGfL became claggy recently so with advice from a super chap there called Mark Harris I deleted our existing list and set about recreating a new one. As our boys are permitted to use Minecraft I added that back in but this morning the lads tell me it's blocked by the filter again. I am trying to set up a virtual server at the school to host Minecraft but would most welcome a pointer to a how to if there is one about. I have a new workstation that has 8GB of RAM onboard and have downloaded the virtual server recommended by Minecraft but ran out of time and experience when it actually came to moving on. The PC has Windows 7 Pro 64 bit as an OS. From my recollection of the little I have read up on Minecraft i believe I'd be advised to make the Virtual Machine Linux but what size memory etc should I allocate?

Thanks Michael. I presume this would be something needed for SWGfL as well? -
iPads - just. Seeking a walk through on set up

Cripes - just shows how in the woods I am on these things - I never spotted that thread. I'm very happy for this to be moved there. -
The Management decided we needed some iPads and they have just landed on my desk. We are a Windows 2008 Standard Domain with a mix of XP Pro and windows 7 Clients with 7 Apple Macs which with much help and guidance from the good folk of Edugeek I have working on the Domain. iPads are a brand new thing to me though so I'm looking for a bit of guidance on best practice for setting them up and using them with our Domain.

[ms office - 2010] Saving in Word and Excel 2010
speckytecky replied to stebo730's topic in Office Software
Reviving this one yet again. I think I can see what the issue is now. Logging on as a student opening MS Office 2010 Word then going to Trust Centre and looking at Trusted Locations I can see that the student is not picking up his home drive as a trusted location. Trying to add it for him brings up a message The remote or network path you have entered is not allowed by your current security settings. We are a Server 2008 Domain with a mix of XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro clients. This particular client is the latter. Oddly it’s not happening on all the clients nor is it the case with the effected user on another client, and it's only Word that it happens in? -
[sims] How do you create a definition file for extraction of MIS data?
speckytecky replied to speckytecky's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks for that. What I was looking for is how do I create the *.RptDef file We use CASPA as well and the extraction of the annual pupil update from SIMS is accomplished using a CASPA Pupil Data Year.Reptdef -
We are looking at running 3 Squares Conduct Data Online but to set it up need to extract three sets of data from SIMS. The data needs to be uploaded as a xml file. I know with other extractions from SIMS we achieve it by running a definition file and am trying to find out how to set about creating definition files for this data? Or is there another way?

Doh - if I'd looked a little harder on the web site the description is there! Distraction of having teenage daughters sparking off at each other is my excuse!!

[ipad] Managing iPads in school?
speckytecky replied to TechSupp's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I fear they are coming in my EDB School - I'd love a fuller description of the how to set up and policy if it's available please AngryITGuy. -
Found the generated file on our system on the C: drive of the SIMS server. Hope this helps.

Talking of Yahoo our boys discovered that by typing random letters such as kkk or mmm into Yahoo Images they accessed inappropriate images. Since added this to our SWGfL filter.

Share your feelings about Laptops mate but Management just adore em! As to wireless I did share your feelings toward it but since persuading the Management that Ruckus via Net Ctrl and their superb support was the way it's been bliss - touch wood.

Mangled USB ports - what do you do with yours?
speckytecky replied to speckytecky's topic in Hardware
Thanks for the terrifically useful answers as usual. Unplugging the USB from the motherboard worked a treat and I'll certainly be exploring those port blockers. -
One of our little dears has managed to rip out the plastic separator tabs on a front facing USB port of a Fijitsu Siemens. Not only have they done that but they then went on to bend the various now exposed contacts shorting the PC out so it won't boot. It looks likely to be a bit of an ongoing problem. I have straightened the contacts out but what to do as a permanent solution. Anyone else had this issue and found a good workaround?

Thanks for all the very useful comments folks. More proof of just what a brilliant tool Edugeek is so thanks again to the creators and ongoing management. As Fraggle Pete is at a fellow Wiltshire school I'll be looking to take his kind offer of a visit up.

I received an e-mail recently from Impero looking to talk about their classroom management software. Is anyone using it and have feedback? Much of what's on offer through them sounds a bit like stuff (with a cool looking interface) we should be able to do with Server 2008 if given a bit of time to learn it better!!

Spiceworks and an Excel file are what I'm working with - not completed yet but heading in the right direction.

Have to check that, strange thing is it was working fine before!

Thanks Stebo730. I wonder how many other users have experienced the same issue? -
[ms office - 2010] Saving in Word and Excel 2010
speckytecky replied to stebo730's topic in Office Software
Did you ever resolve this one. We have Server 2008 Standard and a mix of XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro 32 bit and 64 bit clients. Clients all have MS Office 2010 SP1 under MAK key. Recently some students have been finding Word will open their documents but won't save or save as. I am changing the permissions on the home folder to allow Creator Owner to read, write, list and read and execute to see if that makes any difference. Otherwise the management want me to roll back to 2003! -
We run through SWGfL and since the return to school our admin ladies who use Yahoo Mail have been asked by Yahoo to upgrade to the latest version. Unfortunately although they can now access their mail they can't get any action out of the reply button - any ideas please folks?

Thanks Sted will be giving RSAT a go tomorrow.
