Don't know where you are in the UK but having recently had a set up visit from Education Mac, Apple Education Consultant to set up and integrate our Mini Mac Server I can highly recommend going that route.

They haven't said but I presume just visual.

It looks like the best option is establishing the Servers in a remote building on the site which is away from the main building and having a limited service from there. That said the access for the broadband is in the main building so I'm stuffed as far as that goes probably anyhow. What I'm thinking now though is having been asked whilst this is still in the planning stage to get some decent network cabling put in whilst this is all being done - I suspect that in order to comply with various regs the current grey coloured Cat5 will be replaced by them anyhow. We haven't in reality got a decent set up when it comes to network switches several long Cat5 runs that have got to be well over 150M between daisy chained switches so probably need to look at that as well.

UPS wont be adequate we are talking of the juice being off for days not hours.

We have a major rewire of the school happening in the Summer. I have not lived through one of these before!! What planning can I put in place to preserve the network and ensure services continue. I'm told that there will be staff needing network access during the period of the work. I suppose the good news is I have been asked at an earlyish stage and can ask for inclusion of such as a filtered supply to the server room.

Thanks for the prompt replies folks. What puzzels me is the existing servers are not listed in the DHCP reservations list so it leaves me wondering how that was done?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but I have a small question which many of you will hopefull easily answer. We have two DCs here and they are allocated 10.***.***.2 and 10.***.***.3 we are adding a Mini Mac server and I'd like to allocate it 10.***.***.4 Looking at our DHCP Scope we have 10.***.***.50 through to 10.***.***.200 with an exclusion of 10.***.***.200 to 10.***.***.210 (for switches I think). So, the actual servers are outside the scope so I can't place a reserve on the Mac address of the Mini Mac. What's the best way round this one please?

Our changes are mainly to accommodate the students with level of staff cover in appropriate rooms and external visits. If that makes any sense!

You are quite right Glenda but I had the same problem coming up to the end of the FY a sister school is well into these devices and my teachers liked the way they use them there so before I could blink these devices started to appear then I was requested to get them set up with access. First time I had touched one so heck of a steep learning curve! Still very much ongoing!

Currently we are trying to set up timetabling through SIMS. I'm getting mixed messages which point me first suggesting we need Nova5 then 2 days onsite work by Capita to set us up? Our Timetable changes daily (EDB School with 70 KS3 Lads). Any pointers on to how we go forward would be much appreciated.

I'd second Michael's Firmware update suggestion. That's what happened here - turned out a module was missing, that in our case enabled PostScript and the memory they had installed was iffy.

I have a HP 625 Laptop - not long out of warranty that has a key (the up volume key) detached from the keyboard. The key will not go back as the teeny weany lugs that should hold it to it's holder have vanished. HP Support suggested it would need a complete keyboard replacement. Seems a bit OTT to me when one key would do the job and anyhow it's not a key that makes a difference in use.

Another vote for Impero. Additionally it's led by a team who have a background in UK Schools ICT and their support is easy to use and so far has never left me for one, wanting.

The athletics club I'm involved with Home has a website set up by our former Secretary through MS Live but apparently MS is stopping this service so the club has till the 30 th of this month to sort out an alternative. This is a Community Sports Club not well financed so we are looking at options with some urgency. Any suggestions please?

A variety of good advice above for the OP. However, it's also worth thinking about who is going to look after the kit. Outside contractors will no doubt be very willing - at a cost. In house with a parent volunteer who has some experience and spare time is worth considering or perhaps a local contract to that person. Worth considering what your LA and local Grid for Learning can provide and you probably have a dedicated LA advisor who can offer useful advice. Worth asking CAPITA Children's Services - they came in and did me a cost free state of play survey.

Great thread, thanks, some very useful ideas. We are an EDB (Emotionally Disturbed Boys) school with a maximum class size of 8. Our computer breakage seem very much down to the supervision. We have one teacher who is rarely away and does a fantastic job supervising the lads and the kit in her classroom reflects this, on the other hand!!

What is the answer to security for iPads and other ultra portable Apple devices being not the least. My school is also venturing forth into the iWorld and the first I knew of this was after being asked to add some devices to our wireless. It was my first time hands on with any Apple other than an iMac!

I am setting up three network printers, one has accepted the name I have allocated it but the other 2 appear on the network as secon123etc not SamsungPE and SamsungScience as I set them through static IP address allocation?
