Not much help, but we had a similar issue a Hitachi projector, tried everything above and ended up sending it back under warranty (thank god for 5 year guarantee. Sent back fixed, but they never told us what they actually repaired/replaced. I assume the LCD panel.

I think you'd have to be crazy not use RAID on a production server. Losing a server and having to rebuild the host, restore all services, down time and angry staff for outweigh the costs of couple of extra disks for a 'Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks' in your servers. As others have said, I've lost disks over the years, but never a server, it happens and probably will happen to you at some point, this is why we take proactive/preventative measures.

I'd say yes you need them, as it's not just fires they could be needed for, that are other scenarios that could result in someone needing to evacuate a building. At the end of the day, it's management and discipline. There's not much more you can do. I assume you have CCTV/know which children are causing the issues, so I'd leave it with senior management. Setting off any break glass call points here, with no real emergency, results in exclusion, parents brought in and billed and the pupil being put on report/monitored. It is quite serious.

Just the one VM or multiple?

It sounds like it could be an old VM. Do all the other VMs failover as they should? There's nothing in the actual HyperV console on the servers that you don't recognise is there? (Not the failover cluster manager)

How long has the VM been running? Have you recently added any more VMs? What RAID config are you using? Local or SAN storage?

As you said, P2V incase anything goes majorly wrong (which is shouldn't, but better safe than sorry) and raise the level on the tin, but just be careful with checkpoints, DCs don't like these so it's best not to use them.

TO be honest, unless you have any Win2000 DCs you'll be fine. I think you'd be best raising the 2003 box, to 2003 level, then 2012 supports joining a 2003 domain, then transfer the roles and up the domain level again.

You could raise the functional level to 2003, then that should allow you to add a Server 2012 DC, take over everything and promote that. If you wanted to, you could stick with 2012 R2 for DCs, still got a long life yet, or go to 2012 add a 2016 secondary DC and then if you want to in the future, add another 2016 to replace the 2012. Plus side is with virtual machines, it'll actually be a really straight forward process, just a bit of a faff.

Nope, cached credentials, plus you can always log on to the hypervisor as a local admin too. Not had a Virtual DC for a while now, isn't much need. When we ran a Hyper-V cluster, we ran a Virtual DC outside of it with some other services, but this was only for if we lost the cluster for some bizarre reason. Physical DCs seem a little like wasted resources these days, they don't require huge amounts of CPU power to run well.

Buy a remanufactured drum off ebay? They're around £20 and if it's still working and has toner left, it'll probably be well worth it.
