Depends how your GPO is set. You have preference and forced settings for Chrome. You can set the Preferred Downloads setting as H:\ in the GPO (instead of forced), meaning that will be the default for all users, but they can override this setting then, meaning you can change it on her machine to prompt for save location and I believe this should give you the desired effect.

From how I've seen student machines get used, definitely over kill. Although as you say the machines are due for a refresh, you could definitely squeeze another couple of years from them, even the first gen i7s are still more than capable!

I really don't understand Impero at the moment, the software has gone very buggy and the cheek on pricing on renewal is madness, wonder if they're struggling? It's all dependant on the use and the school. For £225, I can get a Lenovo with a Quad Pentium, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD brand new. We bought a few as the school don't like refurb, fair enough. Will the used HP Elitebook outlive this cheap plastic Lenovos? Most certainly, their CPU may be a few generations behind, but it's still more than capable and will walk all over the new Pentium Quad CPU, heck, I still use a Core2 laptop for home use every now and again, works fine. As with all laptops, batteries degrade and at variable rates, at this point I may even favour refurb as a lot of new laptops have the batteries inside, making them a nightmare to service. Plus I'd never buy any laptop anticipating it to last 8 years, always 3-4 and I'm sure to let the schools know after this period, they will show their age. Again, there are pros and cons for each, you may have decided it won't work for your school which is fair enough, but it works for many others and very well!

What are the costs if you don't mind me asking and spec? The benefit of more smaller drives is you can have more drive failures and rebuild times would be a little quicker, also it would be quicker in theory as a bigger stripe, also easier to create separate RAID configs. The benefit of bigger drives is less rack space, less power consumption. Either way, you should be ok, just think which would work better for you.

You should be able to deploy it via group policy by just using the UNC path and it will map, that or you can use a VBS script.
