Who installed the switches? It sounds like it could be a config issue

What do you run as the core? Have the switches been configured at all and are there any VLANs? Also are they in stacks and how many uplinks run to the new switches and at what speeds?

Have you logged in as the local administrator?

We have issues with black screens and not being able to click the start menu, still trying to get this sorted here

This has been mentioned a few times, but surely unless you had Gigabit internet, you'd see a slow down? We have a 100Mb line and if we went that route, surely it'd be just like going back from a Gigabit to a 100Mb network?

Refurb servers are very cheap anyway, even for good spec if you got stuck. Cost wise you could potentially save a few quid if you looked into a HyperV Failover Cluster, cost saving is quite big but obviously it depends how invested/content you are with VMware

We are in a similar position, I've been looking towards Unifi for switching and wireless and haven't heard enough bad things to sway me away. As for servers I'm assuming you're already running a cluster? If so, I think you'd see more performance in a new SAN with faster drives and a faster backbone, clusters have enough redundancy to not worry too much, could probably get another 3 years from our 4 year old servers with no problems, but as the SAN contains moving parts and is essentially the heart of the network, I'd be wary running it past 4/5 years old, be ok to convert to an additional backup though!

Do you not have VLSC through your work? The licence will activate with an ISO from VLSC

That's very good going! But I'd assume it means roaming profiles, in which case, you'd be able to do it via powershell, off the top off my head I'm not sure what the command would be. That being said, I know on our vanilla network, if we completely delete the profile, it remakes a new one at login, this is what I sometimes do, or create a new one.

I'd assume if they have roaming profiles, it'd either delete/recreate them too as they can cause issues if they become corrupt. If you're still paying for RM support, contact them and I imagine they'd be able to give the instructions or do it for you as obviously they'll have their own way of doing things!

You'd probably spend longer getting it to work anyway haha, moving them will be the easier option, plus over wired you know you can leave it unattended

Checked firewall settings? Disable it for a moment, try ping it and if it works, you may need to adjust the settings

As far as I'm aware you can't do this and even so, it'd end up being hit and miss and would take much longer than doing it over a wired network. Do the laptops not have ethernet? If not, you can always buy USB to ethernet adapters

I've tinkered with ADJs MyDMX and it seems very good for the price, easy to use, enough features and does the job!

Most are still only a little LCD panel inside, so could potentially work!

JScreenFix - Pixel Repair That can sometimes work, but end up being a warranty/replacement if it's quite bad.

Personally I think Macs are great as standalone machines, but on a network, I'm not a fan, Apple don't spend much time or effort developing OSX Server which is now an APP and have even said in the past they aren't targeting this market. I've always found Windows PCs easier to manage and can be very quick if configured correctly. As to the slowness, is this even the machines? An insight to what the school are using could paint a broader picture: -What wireless system is in place? -What switches are being used? -What spec is the server (drive speeds, RAID config, OS, RAM, CPU) -Is offline files in use? -What OS are the current clients using?
