Does it work with the Unifi switches or just the Edge ones? It definitely will make the Edge switches much more enticing in the future as they're Full L3 and being able to easily manage them like this would be great.

Can I ask why you want to upgrade first? We are currently running a 13 year old HP chassis system with 1Gb links to cabs and to be honest, it's still more than capable for what it does. Do you run voip/cctv over the network?

I'd still be pushing them. Out of warranty or not, they shouldn't be failing at that age, especially all of them, never mind one or two. I'd be going to Sony and kicking up a fuss. The trick is be polite, yet firm, perhaps a little bit manipulative with your questions. It can be done and I'd be pushing. Get the original supplier involved too, if you have a good account manager, they'll definitely be able to push them. Honestly, keep pushing and hopefully it will pay off for you in the end.

We had this issue on the same PCs. Check you definitely have all the correct drivers in MDT, especially the chipsets.

We took the readers out of ours, checked who the manufacturer was and we got the new updated full mech straight from the manufacturer for much less than NRS wanted. Can't believe the markup they put on, it's not even like they're covering overheard/support plus a bit on top, it's just greed to me.

I've never had issues running it on a live machine. Perhaps the best bet would kick it off on a weekend?

Not sure if this is much help, but for our old physical servers, we made VHDs and used 'Disk2VHD' to create a copy of the server should it ever fail which we can then spin up as VM, we update it manually every few months and do the normal file level backup daily.

Just the same argument for Windows, Linux Android and Chrome OS, too. We can all go on Google and have the internet tell us what we want it to. There's no argument that Windows currently has the biggest market share, but that's not to say we shouldn't be exposing students to as many of these OSes as possible. Mobile devices are definitely becoming more prevalent and they're great, yet the need for a desktop will still be around for a while, especially in data, office, design jobs etc, I just don't believe as a school, it should be one system. I've worked at a school where we had Chrome OS, Windows, Linux, Mac OS Android and iOS all running together and that worked great, in fact it wasn't far off 1:1 when I left (in regards to class sets).

Not to be funny, but you can easily buy in a good laptop AND desktop PC less than the cost of one iPad pro 12.9", plus pencil, plus keyboard and still have change.

Are computers still not needed to deliver lessons on coding/office tasks/website design and learning another OS? If the school offers any form of ICT/Computing GCSE, would they not be needed at all for this? What about online exams? Here we a re looking to use a mixtures of OSes including Linux, Windows, macOS, iOS and Chrome OS, exposing the students to different platforms in my opinion is good. Also, in the real world it's becoming apparent students are knowing less and less about basic computing and computing tasks (is it the early millenium again?!), whilst they may not have a PC at home and I agree they are very familar with tablet devices and this can be in turn used to enhance their education, the likeliness is if they ever get a job, they will at some point need to use a desktop PC and office suite as part of that job. We are seeing more and more children come from primary and not having properly used desktops before and again, day to at home, we probably don't need them, but when preparing them for the real world at getting them ready to go onto further education/jobs, surely something as basic as being able to use word, copy and paste, folder structures should be basic knowledge?

I'd say it's always good to keep a paper trail. Maybe make staff aware too either in a staff briefing, staff bulletin, all staff email, just so they know it's been changed. Email is always a safe bet though, as imaginably it's written in their original policy that they must keep on top of this and again, should you need too, you can prove an amended copy has been sent to all staff.

Not sure if it's compulsory, but should an issue ever arise and there's a signed copy, they can't plead ignorance. It's good practice at very least anyway, we ensure all staff and pupils sign a fair use policy before using the system. If we got new PCs any time soon, I'd have to check I wasn't dreaming! We recently bough refurb Dells in summer and I can't see us having any 7th series intel or Ryzen CPUs before Win7 becomes EoL. As I said, for us, Win7 is working and well, may be the same others, some may be blessed with great budgets and new servers and PCs and good refresh cycles, unfortunately we aren't in that position at the moment. Luckily we are making the right steps to get there and the school know of the 2020 deadline and we are planning for it, but it'll be Aug 2019 before we start jumping ships and get our estate ready for the change.

Currently I'm sticking to Windows 7, having trialled 10, I didn't quite feel it was there, I felt it needed too much baby sitting and with the school being quite large and plenty of other jobs to do, at the minute is doesn't make sense for us, there's nothing Windows 7 can't do for us at the moment. Whilst being on the latest and greatest is good in many ways, there's downsides, too. One thing I think some techs forget is what their actual job is, not just to run a network, it's to provide tools to aid learning and teaching. We all joke about teachers not being IT literate, but we are here to help them, no matter how big or small an issue is, whether or not they've forgotten how to unmute their volume, they have a lesson to teach and if that lesson involves IT, it's our priority to ensure we get it resolved ASAP. This is where Win10 currently falls short for me, for the little niggles staff were having, it was taking away from their teaching time and yielding no real benefits, plus with the bi-annual updates and things sometimes breaking, again, this takes away from lessons in the sense we have to change policies, reinstall software/drivers and so on. Staff will have a better perception of IT if it's reliable and we are friendly and get things done, most staff couldn't care less if we were still on XP, as long as it works, they can logon on quick and know they can provide a lesson and access the tools they need, that's all that matters to them. That's just my opinion though, as this thread has shown, we all entitled and everyone has their own methods, again none right or wrong, every school is different, so we make things work for the people we work with.

I had this, for what is was I just added them manually and saved the file for future reference. For the time I'd probably have spent getting it to work with AD, I spent a couple minutes just adding the PC names. Other than that can't fault it, works really well. I do worry about the security side a bit, but should be ok. Be good if they add logon, that'd be a god send.

What resolution are the laptops? If you're like us, most teachers will prefer duplicated desktop rather than extended, so I'd just run the board to match the resolution of the laptop.

If you have a 4K TV, or plan to, get the One X. If not, save a few hundred quid and get the One S. Black Friday tomorrow too, so maybe hold off and see if any deals pop up.
