  1. IE8/9 can occasionally have timing issues... try the following: Change: $(window).load(function() { $('#slider').nivoSlider({ effect: 'random', // Specify sets like: 'fold, fade, sliceDown' animSpeed: 500, // Slide transition speed pauseTime: 6000, // How long each slide will show controlNav: false, // 1,2,3... navigation controlNavThumbs: false, // Use thumbnails for Control Nav pauseOnHover: true, // Stop animation while hovering }); }); to: $(function() { ...*snip* and see what effect that has... if it resolves, the problem is likely the timing of when you're calling $(window).load
  2. Only justification I can see for Macs over PCs (and I'm a Mac user meself, but with 20 years of commercial PC hardware development and support in my back pocket) is for very specific apps that are damn good at what they do that are only available for that specific platform, eg: Logic / MainStage, Garageband, BoinxTV, FinalCut, & xCode (if you want to write native iOS apps for the appstore). These are all far superior to the equivalents on PC in terms of value for money and time required to produce quality output. It's a balancing act... there's nothing Logic & Garageband can do that Cubase can't. There's nothing Mainstage can do that Steinberg Sequel can't. There are appropriate apps for PC that cover those bases. Cubase on a PC = Cubase on a Mac (other than the soundcard uses CORE audio on Mac vs ASIO on PC... and CORE tends to be better at working with generic hardware than ASIO, thus ppl appear to see less latency on Mac when using Cubase - solution there is to choose your soundcards for your Music dept based on ASIO2 driver availability). Adobe CS5 / CS6 on a PC = Adobe CS5 / CS6 on a Mac. Office on a Mac = Office on a PC. There are no significant differences or benefits other than the IT dept will need to know / learn how to roll out customisations, apps, restrictions etc via a different method to what they're used to. That said, there may be cases where a Mac can be justified over a PC (eg: iOS app development), but the majority of those scenarios are single members of staff doing specific roles... in which case sliding in a single one-off Mac device is relatively simple and painless. The issue as I perceive it (based on what I've heard from various senior leaders of a few places) at the moment in current economical climate is that parents and prospective pupils are more likely to go "wow" when they see Mac devices on an open evening, and on that basis are more likely to attend the school. Ditto for sixth forms. In the case of sixth forms, the money that the establishment receives per head is significant, so anything that can be done to draw students into enrolling is worth doing. I have overheard it said that media course at establishment X and same course at establishment Y are identical in terms of results/performance of pupils, but establishment Y has Macs not PCs, therefore our child will be attending Est Y. It turns out Est Y has 30% higher enrolment on that course, and many put it solely down to the pull of the Macs on open evening, and that translates to a lot of cash from government for Establishment Y that Establishment X won't be getting... So in some cases, the reasons for wanting Macs isn't at all technical, and is more grounded in marketing and PR... and when it comes to sixth forms, Macs can be quite justifiable in terms of return on investment if it gets a student enrolled. S'all about appearance *shrug*
  3. Have a look at http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/101143-deploying-ios-devices-yhgfl-whitepaper.html The PDF lists all the common ip blocks and ranges
  4. Apple ProfileManager / MyDevices - the MDM solution built in to OSX Server.
  5. CommandLine is required... 1. Connect the machine to the network with a wired connection, turn on the Mac, and hold Cmd+R. Eventually you should arrive at the recovery console 2. Head to Utilities across the top, and choose Terminal. 3. Run the following commands at the bash# prompt: bash# networksetup -setmanual Ethernet <> <> <> bash# networksetup -setdnsservers Ethernet <> <> bash# networksetup -setwebproxy Ethernet <> <> authenticated <> <> bash# networksetup -setsecurewebproxy Ethernet <> <> authenticated <> <> Replace <<...>> with what it says, so (for instance) top line becomes: bash# networksetup -setmanual Ethernet 10.126.168.20 255.255.255.0 10.126.168.1 4. Test the network connection by running the following at the bash# prompt: bash# ping http://www.google.com bash# ping http://www.apple.com 5. If the ping tests return pings successfully, Cmd+Q to quit terminal, and proceed with recovery from the internet. Reference: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/networksetup.8.html Odd - Apple Store working fine for me right now behind full authenticated proxy on multiple devices.
  6. Only doable if you jailbreak the device. Not a usable solution I'm afraid. The IPs should just tie down to facebook's CDN (s-platform.ak.fbcdn.net), the akamai CDN (fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net), and pct.channel.facebook.com / m.c10r.facebook.com (or similar). Bloxx should be able to reverseDNS the IPs so that if you blacklist the domains *.facebook.com & *.fbcdn.net that'll stop it. If it's not doing, I'd be tempted to contact Bloxx for a solution.
  7. *shakes head and wanders off to find a less discriminatory forum to hang about in*
  8. Another vote for Litedeck - I've been working with it thru-out the staging & lighting business for best part of 15 years. Aluminium (thus light weight - one man can safely hoik a single deck on his back if he knows the insider method), modular, 8'x4' main decks, with 4'x4' half decks. You'll recognise it as soon as you see it - s'used for most festival staging, as well as on stage sets & drum risers thru-out the Europe. Comprises to all the usual industry regs & safety standards, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Full modular handrails and steps are available, as well as scissor lifts, travelators, traps etc which can be rented in on a per-day basis and added in as and when required. S'also compatible by design with the full astralite & litetrak ranges of truss if you want to give your drama dept the option of renting this in for more flexible lighting setups. Leg heights for the decks variable either by length of leg poles / frames used or with screwjacks (if being erected on even surfaces). The volume of it when walked on etc is all down to how you assemble whatever you get. We had premises assembling ours a while back and no matter how much training they were given they never gave it the attention it was due and thus it made a load of row. Whenever I assembled it properly, it was silent. Litedeck is a case of flip the panel over, pop in your leg frames or poles, flip it back to it's proper way up, align with adjacent panels and then it uses a coffin lock system (big hex key) thru the top deck to lock to nearest neighbours rather than cheap u-clips or nut n' bolts. AND there are also proper accredited training courses you can send folk on specifically for its proper usage and assembly (via http://www.backstage-academy.co.uk, located in South Elmsall, next door to LiteStructures' UK HQ) Litestructures LiteDeck | SteelDeck | Prolyte StageDex | ProStage | Deck Depot (altho may be able to buy cheaper going direct to Litestructures.com)
  9. Read up on PCI DSS Compliance. The site and hosting will have to comply with this if you do any credit card handling on the site itself / if their card details land in a hosted database on the site at any point.
  10. Go here: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/Teachers/Training/ Top right corner, link says 'Register'. Do so. Login with the details you setup when you register. Done.
  11. Most of the issuers of those marks state that you can only use marks as provided by them in accordance with specific style guidelines. Redrawn versions are a breach of registered trademark etc, therefore asking others to redraw is a breach also. Persist with sourcing from the originators is the best advice I can give.
  12. Battery's sample bank sounds aren't stored with the project. They're stored in a separate location. If users are creating custom patches and moving sounds around, then saving the project won't include that either. The Battery patch will need to be saved manually.

  14. Had the delightful company of the YHGfL guys today for their 'Leadership for Network Managers' programme, and honestly cannot sing it's praises enough (and am frankly baffled as to why it hasn't been pimped on here by Mr Yoward previously). This is the first truly useful bit of CPD training that I've ever attended. Covers items that EVERYONE working in or with IT in schools really needs to know regarding impact of OFSTED eSafeguarding framework, Digital Economy Bill, your legal responsibilities towards Data Protection, and much much more, and hammers home the point of why this stuff HAS to be taken seriously at ALL levels within schools, now moreso than ever. The three half-day programme condenses down brilliantly into a one day version for a small group of 10 or so, although to do it real justice get SLT & Governors in on it as well as your entire IT Support team, and give it a day n' a half (possible weekend at a conference venue?) as the discussions that arise during it are fascinating, and eye opening. Failing that, it's standard format is 3x half days. Huge thanks to Andy Yoward (Technical Services head honcho), Richard Brook (Information Security specialist) and Rob Bashforth (Bradford eSafeguarding guru) for taking our IT team and guests from neighbouring schools' teams through it today. Look forward to meeting up again to delve deeper...
  15. This topic's cropped up quite a bit of late... have a look at: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/105633-30-ipads-10-ipods-need-reset-find-new-management-system.html?highlight=ipads http://www.edugeek.net/forums/behind-red-door/105411-mission-creep-ipads-back-door.html?highlight=ipads http://www.edugeek.net/forums/behind-red-door/103646-apple-my-school.html?highlight=ipads http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/105256-apple-configurator-deployment.html?highlight=ipads and a general delve thru Netbooks, PDA and Phones

  17. Yep... been using it here since it was released. Useful links: Apple - Support - Lion Server - Profile Manager http://images.apple.com/ipad/business/docs/iOS_MDM_Mar12.pdf http://images.apple.com/education/docs/IOS_5_Education_Deployment_Guide.pdf We tend to pre-stage all our school owned iPads using Configurator (to drop on the initial trust profile, assign the iPad name, and drop it onto the WiFi). Staff then receive the device, hit a home-screen shortcut to the MDM enrolment page, where they pop in username and password, and everything is then automated (exchange & calendar accounts configured, restrictions put in place dependant on AD usergroup, apps pushed out depending on AD usergroup, complex unlock code requirements set etc). Whenever we make a change at the server (eg: new mail server address, new apps, new ibook resources), updates are pushed straight out to the clients automatically. Personally owned devices just require us to add the user into a specific group for BYOD users, then they visit the same enrolment page. Same applies to any iPhone & iPod users, and it also manages our OSX clients. We can also remote wipe / lock / locate / change unlock code.
  18. (Or install server.app on existing mac and use the built in profilemanager/MDM system to do it all over the air rather than tethered via configurator)

  21. Have a read of this from Adobe's product manager... Clarifications on Flash Player for Mobile Browsers, the Flash Platform, and the Future of Flash at Mike Chambers Even Adobe themselves acknowledge the fact, reinforced by their release of CreateJS plugins to allow Flash CS6 Pro designers to migrate everything over to JS and HTML5.
  22. HTML / CSS / Javascript is definitely the way. This will teach the methodology of animating using the canvas, which isn't going to go anywhere in the foreseeable future... support is ever-growing for it. Saying HTML5 won't be around is a bit misleading... That's like saying learning HTML3 would've been useless, yet a vast majority of the content of HTML5 is unchanged from HTML3 realistically. The methods and tag structure etc are all still more or less the same, and adapting from one version of HTML to the next is very straightforward. Ultimately what is the purpose of teaching animation? That will define the method by which it is taught. Animation for the web: teach use of canvas via HTML/CSS/JS. Animation for media purposes, then something along the lines of Blender... ( after all if Yr6 kids can use it, then KS3+ definitely should be able to - see: Blender ) If talking coding, then JS, PHP, Ruby & Perl all share similar pseudocode structures, so learning any one will immediately put one in good footing to learn any of the rest, and as Javascript is client-side and can be easily run in a web browser, it seems the most sensible starting point without requiring any further software beyond the OS's native web browser, and a text editor. For an example of where canvas has gotten to in the very short time since it became widely supported, see http://www.canvasdemos.com/type/games/
  23. HTTPS for the AppStore, so down to how the proxy is configured (bearing in mind that iOS only asks for details for HTTP proxy, not HTTPS, thus there is no username / password sent for HTTPS queries until your proxy rejects HTTPS without the auth, thus causing device to prompt for auth, which will be stored for a relatively short amount of time - 20 mins or so)
  24. Download and reinstall LDAPCapture... if prob still occurs, try the version that this is forked from, over at Citricity Ltd 2012 Both are compatible with fac-2-moodle / network drive access blocks.
