1. Do your users know what that unique attribute is(?), as that would have to become their Moodle log in, then you just change the User Attribute within LDAP Settings to match that unique attribute.
2. What version of moodle? There are ldap sync scripts kicking about that you could use... trigger it via cron every evening to keep things up to date... Using Moodle: LDAP sync users - what to do if LDAP search limits the # of records it'll return Using Moodle: LDAP Mass sync users Set up a bookmark for your data team to load whenever they change a username for instance. Have a look at the ldap authentication settings guide at http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/LDAP_authentication - you can change the user attribute to look at a different field in AD if required.
3. Nope, not afaia - the tie is done on username so if the username changes, then it's new account time. When a user logs in to an LDAP-enabled Moodle, it looks at the username you've tried to log in with and checks whether it exists in Moodle. If it doesn't, it checks against AD and if it finds it there then it creates a new Moodle account. The only way is to manually change the Moodle username BEFORE they next login to Moodle but after you've changed their account in AD. I use MySQLFront and BulkADUsers on desktop which makes it quick n' easy to change both tables via GUI. Alternatively, you could use ADLDAP for PHP and knock up a web interface to enter the change thru, and let the PHP pixies make the changes in both AD and MySQL/PostgreSQL simultaneously...
4. Got a server here running 12 instances of the client as different users, and I can update/modify/create/delete over LAN from any device, and the changes are reflected perfectly across all devices signed in with those IDs whether also on the LAN or otherwise... and vice versa. Edit: basically used the method here: http://www.techtipsgeek.com/run-multiple-instances-dropbox-windows-7-vista/10831/ ... shortcuts run on startup, server has to be logged in then locked. Can be made to run as service on boot tho, just never got round to it. He's simplified the procedure now tho fortunately - not tried this method yet: http://www.techtipsgeek.com/easiest-way-run-multiple-instances-dropbox-windows-7/10971/
5. The fact that it's the mythic-beasts guys says to me they want a scripted solution that parses the question from the html, evals it, submits it, and displays the response. Seems simple at first... eg: $url = "http://www.mythic-beasts.com/cgi-bin/job.pl"; $input = file_get_contents($url) or die("Could not access file: $url"); function getp($string, $tagname) { $pattern = "/<$tagname>(.*?)<\/$tagname>/"; preg_match($pattern, $string, $matches); return $matches[1]; } $str = $input; $txt = getp($str, "p"); $pieces = explode(" ", $txt); $num=count($pieces); $end=$num - 10; $a=1; $question=''.$pieces[1].''; $a++; while($a<=$end){ $question.=$pieces[$a]; $a++; } $answer=eval("return $question;"); preg_match('/value="(\w+)"/',$input,$result); $id=substr($result[0],7,-1); echo 'QUESTION: '.$question.' '; echo 'ANSWER: '.$answer.' '; echo 'ID: '.$id.' '; // Now, find a way to submit $answer AND $id to www.mythic-beasts.com/cgi-bin/job.pl, and _THEN_ display the resultant output! ?> The above is functional in terms of getting the question, working out the answer, and grabbing the hidden 'id' field from the form to accompany the answer... however, it opens the job.pl to get this, and doesn't hold it open. If we add a step at the end to submit via PHP, then (1) it reloads job.pl - suspect we want job.pl to be opened and HELD open, and (2) PHP can't parse the response to tell you whether the answer is correct, quick enough, and reveal the next stage. Crafty combo of PHP / cURL / Javascript required to handle all of this, submit results via ajax and display response. Then you can start working on the next part of the sequence for Q2... Next step would be to submit a JSON encoded array to it and see what response is fired back. PERFECT interview question if you're wanting to test someone's ability to problem solve AND their coding skills...
6. Tip for the future... make a copy of php.ini to php.[date].bak before you make a change in future, then you can just copy & rename it back again and be back up n' running if your edits go pearshaped. Same goes for any/all conf files to do with Apache / MySQL / PHP.
7. AD Helpdesk as per recommendations above does everything required, OR, use ADLDAP for PHP from Download adLDAP to knock up your own...
8. Downloading now... after a few hours of the errors above.
9. Steinberg Sequel is the closest thing to a like-for-like on PC... as Cubase is to Logic, so Sequel is to Garageband. http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/sequel/whats_sequel.html
10. This is a list of recommended apps that our staff have begun to compile...
11. "Can't establish a secure connection" = https / port 443. Using anything to redirect 443 over 80 or similar within Smoothwall or ISA or similar? Think we ended up whitelisting Dropbox even tho it wasn't showing as being blocked. Hosting Dropbox folder on a share - nope. BUT, if server admins are ok with it, they can install the dropbox client on the server that hosts the share, with the client signed in as you running as a service from commandline.

If it's just the trackpad, trackpad boards can be sourced off eBay and self-fitted, or buy an Apple Magic Trackpad connecting by bluetooth.
13. Indeed arguing about cost is daft. They differ for every establishments' individual implementation, eg: We don't use or need "Emerge" or VGA adapters. If it's their device, they do. If it's the school's device, we do. We can get full spares and self-repair outside of warranty. Inside of warranty we take them to the AppleStore. We have a few spare iPads as well just in case. But as said, apps do create stuff in standard formats. Staff have access to and save to network shares. In case of emergency, there's nothing stopping them accessing the same resources via other methods / devices. Down to the individual. We accomodate iPads for those who WANT TO USE THEM. We're not forcing them on people. It's their choice. If they choose to use one it's assumed they're happy with all the quirks. I can type just as quick on the iPad's screen as I can on my desktop keyboard. You simply get used to it thru continued use, same as with anything else. Some have gone out and bought their own bluetooth keyboard, that's their choice.
14. School purchases the iPad, staff have a monthly sum deducted off their wage over the course of a year until it's paid back. Once it's paid back, they own the device outright. VAT / Tax side of things - *shrug* how they work all that out is the finance department... the only benefit is monthly repayments out of their wage. They don't get it any cheaper than anyone else in education purchasing direct from Apple. Well at the moment they do it online via ePortal, therefore, they just log onto ePortal from the iPad instead of their previous device. QuickOffice HD, or Keynote, both of which can save & open PPT format (there are other choices out there also... basically, all common file formats are accounted for via various apps and can be produced to work across all platforms). Media - videos can be created in iMovie and exported to MP4. Images can be created in the plethora of image apps out there. In some cases yes, in some cases no. That's down to the general IT ability of the individual. Depends on the individual and the specific task at hand for that individual. Some staff can work happily solely on their iPad / mobile device. Others prefer the more standard methods.
15. We've rolled out iPads to a large quantity of staff here. Some have purchased them through the school to use for teaching, others use school-owned ones, others bought their own and brought it in. Some staff have said they'd rather stick with netbooks & laptops. Other staff have expressed a preference for Android devices, so we've supported those too. We're gradually sliding AppleTVs into classrooms also as the software is out there to allow MS & Android devices to broadcast wirelessly to them. All the tools are out there to manage these devices, and connect them to network shares, provide safe internet access and fulfill all the other demands made on those devices by the staff for very little comparative cost. As far as I'm concerned we're there to enable the use of technology, not block it. Who are we to judge what a staff member can work best with? That is down to them to discover for themselves. Some staff can do wonders with mobile devices in the classroom. Some staff can do wonders with a regular desktop device. Some staff are lucky if they can string a sentence together on a typewriter. Others have scabs on their knuckles from where they drag on the floor behind them. Whatever they're comfortable with... *shrug* If the infrastructure costs to ensure data / network security etc don't outweigh the benefits, what's everyone's problem (apart from tunnel vision / blinkers)?
16. If memory serves, turn them into mobile accounts...

Apple have been fitting liquid contact indicators for a while... the above is just for the patent. Take it to the Apple Store BEFORE you attack it yourself. Once Apple hand it back and say "one or more of it's 8 liquid contact indicators are blue, therefore you've spilled something on it so it's no longer covered by warranty" THEN take the screws out yourself, but as with all IT/Electronics gear, if it gets wet at all switch it off immediately and leave it off for 72 hours somewhere warm and dry before switching it back on.
18. (and tell Apache to listen on either all addresses on Port80, or the specific IP address your Linux server is using. Do this in httpd.conf)
19. Search these forums for Cubase advice - tis the same as for ProTools and any other DAW.
20. Try manually mounting the samba shares on your Win servers from the command line rather than via the OSX GUI, then retry and see if speed improves. Doing this has been known to fix other issues with connecting to smb2 shares, so may fix speed issues (connecting to my old NAS box at home it certainly does things faster via this method). If things are noticeably faster, mount shares via a shell script at login rather than via profiles / mcx / adding as login item via GUI. sudo mount -t smbfs //server/share /Volumes/mountpoint Don't forget to create an empty folder within volumes first to use as the mount point... Alternatively you can try installing Samba3 from MacPorts... have a look at http://www.johnlarge.co.uk/2011/07/19/osx-lion-samba-smb-shares-broken-xbmc-not-working/ for guidance, altho it deals more with setting shares up from the Mac, you could easily use it to handle your mounts. Lastly, there's the option of switching to NFS (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd758767(WS.10).aspx) and Netgroups, and connect via that instead.
21. Use the original: Longtail Player... full fallback etc. Works fine to provide MP4 playback to all OS' via either HTML5 or swfobject / flash JW Player: Overview | LongTail Video | Home of the JW Player
22. Eh? It already has been... Moodle Plugins Directory: Parental Portal Afraid not... just don't have the time to take on any more rewrites outside of my day job.
23. Ditto - could I get a copy please... Been using TheDude for about 5 years, and simply turned off discovery and did it all manually to avoid the issue...
24. Line 205 of block_facility_to_moodle.php is the one that needed correcting... (new version is available on the Moodle Plugins Database - corrected a few other issues also, so recommend just downloading this new version and overwriting the old). Have just msg'd you regarding Network Drive Access issue.
25. Heh - definitely my fault then somewhere... Just do a find for course_creator_admin on the facility_to_moodle folder in Dreamweaver or similar and correct the path back to the right one. I'll sort it on the plugin database tomorrow.
