[ipad] Profile Manager set up, what next?
Marci replied to caffrey's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Forgot about this: you could just head to "manage virtual interfaces" in network setup, and connect to both vlans on a single wired connection (also assuming the switch port is configured correctly to allow this) -

It should generate it's own when you set profile manager up iirc. -
You'll need to get the grid support guys to reverse-proxy you a path through - they should be able to talk you thru the requirements you'll have to meet (usually SSL Certs between your server and their reverse proxy box issued with your server's identity... easiest to do using a sub domain on your current website's dns).

[ipad] Profile Manager set up, what next?
Marci replied to caffrey's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Your only issue may be if you use the macmini to provide dhcp on the guest vlan, but I'm presuming you don't. It won't kill anything. You need to set it's time server to your domain dc, and set up a DHCP reservation on your domain network for it, and give it a DNS entry also. Just makes life easier. Then bind it to AD. Back in Server on the mac, create some user groups (students, staff, ictsupport) and then add the relevant AD groups to those (rather than individual users). Voila. You can now use AD credentials to authenticate on /mydevices and populate payloads with content from AD fields. -

Connect the MacMini to your Domain network via WiFi, and to the mobiledevices vlan by ethernet (or vice versa, or grab a USB NIC and connect to both by wire)... That way the Mac can bind to AD and access everything it needs to without the risk of the iPads or any other devices on the guest network being able to do so. The server won't allow routing through unless you tell it to, and there really is bugger all risk involved. -

You need to bind the server to Active Directory. This will let your users login to the /mydevices enrollment link with their AD credentials. That then allows you to use %short_name% for the user name within the Exchange payload, and %email% within the Email Address field, so when the profile is pushed out after they've enrolled it'll auto set all those from AD and just prompt them for their email password. The way we do it, each iPad is unboxed and configured for our network (we use static IPs etc). Once that's done, I install the trust profile direct from profile manager and add a link to /mydevices on the homescreen. When staff collect their iPad, they simply tap the /mydevices link, and tap enroll. If working with DHCP, then you can use the Apple Configurator to provide the WLAN key, drop on the trust profile, /mydevices Web Clip and batch name them... just plug each one in on USB and let Configurator do it's stuff, then users do as above - tap the /mydevices link, login with AD credentials, enrol, and let it configure itself. -
Shouldn't be getting that Fac-to-Moodle error... I can't reproduce it here on my 2.2 install. Back up it's tables (they all begin with mdl_block_facility_to_moodle...) and copy its folder elsewhere so that you have a copy of it as it currently stands, and remove it, then see if the error still exists. The only way to rule out Fac-to-Moodle as the cause is to remove it from the equation entirely by deleting it I'm afraid.

Handing over a school to network manager or technician?
Marci replied to Quillyn's topic in General Chat
Bearing in mind you mention FreeBSD, and iOS devices (are these managed by MDM or not?)... this needs to be someone with a flexible knowledge of various platforms. Does it also involve running a managed wireless system and voip? It all sounds a bit much to ask of a Tech on 18k... I'd be wafting £24k around a bit, with a "Senior ICT Tech" style title, or £28k+ for a Network Manager. -
If done right, the HTML5 app caches itself onto the device and uses local storage to function without internet connectivity, but if connectivity is found then it should grab (for instance) your site's RSS feed and update that into the local storage database... generally whatever generates your RSS feed can be rewritten to provide a JSON feed in parallel. Therefore, update the website, and the app will update itself via the JSON feed once for new content, then run it all locally. We also hope to leverage our use of Moodle / Parental Logins to use the app to provide access to Timetables, Rewards & Behaviour Info, Attendance, Assessment data etc. This is all readily available via our VLE as it currently stands, so the data behind all that again just needs knocking up into a JSON feed so that the app can update itself as and when there are any changes and add it into local storage.

Yep & yep (having done both to the Macbook Pro I bought 3 months before the new one came out).

Times are showing up correctly for myself... head to "Settings" top right, then "General Settings" halfway down lefthandside of the page which follows, then ensure you've got timezone set to GMT and DST Correction set to Auto...

Prevent / Discourage raising long dead threads
Marci replied to rich_tech's topic in Comments and Suggestions
There's already a vBulletin plugin to cover autoclosing threads after a defined period of time: Threads Auto Close - vBulletin.org Forum Shouldn't be too big a deal for ZH to butcher it to only apply to specific forums... -
Same happens here on IE & Firefox from a Windows PC. Tried it from Safari on my Macbook and worked first time... summat duff in the javascript mefinx.

Moving moodle authentication from one domain to another?
Marci replied to reggiep's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Yep, basically. -
We're in the middle of putting in place a suitable hardware / management structure to accomodate whatever mobile / personal devices we're likely to encounter ready for the big push on BYOD / Mobile Devices. We already provide network access to staff on their own devices, and have a separate guest network for our 6th Form students to use, however with Yr7-11 students smartphones are still far from the majority - lowend Blackberry seem to still be the popular option for kids that age. We still have quite a large percentage on non-smartphones (old Nokias etc).

Another thumbs-up for HTML5 here... can also head down the more ring-fenced (in terms of functionality) jQuery Mobile or jqTouch routes, basically making a webapp which costs nothing but time and effort to produce / distribute... and then to take it a step further and publish on the AppStore, get dev account and wrap the whole lot up with Phonegap. Have a look at Getting Started - Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript - OFPS - O'Reilly Media - a tutorial for jqTouch / Phonegap.

Install Net_IPv4 via Pear (Net_IPv4), then whack the following somewhere before where you want the link... (eg: in Moodle's config.php) require 'Net/IPv4.php'; $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; // Get user's IPv4 // Define all LAN/LOCAL IP ranges... $net1 = '172.16.96.0/21'; // Curriculum Range $net2 = '10.113.140.0/24'; // Admin Range $CFG->localuser=4; if ((Net_IPv4::ipInNetwork($ip, $net1)=='1') || (Net_IPv4::ipInNetwork($ip, $net2)=='1')){ $CFG->localuser=1; } then, for the link... echo 'Linky Text'; (I think)

Heh - Yesterday was approaching the end of my 12 week leadtime from RS, and yesterday I got an email from `em saying it'll be another 8 weeks minimum... good job I bought one off a colleague at cost who got one early on & used it twice then relegated it to a shelf due to no use for it (!). It's currently running as a RAMP server.

Have a look at Longtail Video Player (formerly JWPLayer). It covers all the bases... H264 encoded MP4 playable via HTML5 with a Flash fallback is fairly common these days, and can be easily streamed using apache's mod_h264_streaming module. You can also use playlists to retrieve and stream vids from a non-public location on the server. There are also ready-to-roll free / OpenSource solutions such as PHP-Motion that just need dropping on a webserver which has the pre-requisite apps installed. Your biggest issue tho will be finding a solution that doesn't allow end-users to download the video via nefarious means (cache scraping for instance) - there aren't many systems out there that can't be gotten round.

Using Moodle To Populate An Active Directory
Marci replied to cyberrant's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
The Fac-2-Moodle block should only create users if it detects that they exist in AD with the same ID Number. AD users should be created first before running the Fac-2-Moodle import. Generally via a CSV export of users from Facility bulk-imported into AD... THEN run Fac-2-Moodle.- 5 replies
