Agreed - it has gotten a lot better. Before it seemed very "we know what's best for you, don't question us".

Would be interested to hear about it - I've never gone to an LGfL thing as from what I've heard they tend to end up as thinly-veiled adverts for LGfL services rather than genuine information-sharing events.

The issue becomes more problematic at A-Level/degree level where graphing/programmable calculators are actually required. Again, institution-provided units would solve this.

Banning people from bringing their own and having everyone use a school calculator does seem like a reasonable option - albeit a fairly expensive one.

It's very interesting - and to be honest their focus was on certain specific Trusts and people at them, rather than academies as a system. Lack of oversight seems to be the issue - the Public Accounts Committee should put any suspected of dodgy dealing to the metaphorical sword.

We still use roaming profiles with Windows 10 and haven't found any issues beyond those we saw from time to time with Windows 7. That said, this looks interesting and I will definitely want to experiment with it.

We use EntrySign, and are fairly happy after some initial bits of weirdness. Fair warning, they'll try to get you to install the SQL Server on the sign-in appliance itself (which is in our case an Intel m3 all-in-one). Needless to say that's a bad idea, spin up a VM or use an existing SQL Server instance and create a new database for it. The AD integration they provide is also pants - doesn't pull in ID card tokens correctly, decides to duplicate users on a whim - so I wrote my own PowerShell script that runs every few minutes to push data from AD to the EntrySign database. Happy to provide said script if you want, but obviously if it goes haywire and eats your lunch don't blame me or the manufacturers of the system! That said it's been working a treat for us - no more manual double entry of everything. Cheaper than Inventry and we know its oddities now, so it works well.

I believe it was originally for a piece of software called "Learning Network Manager" - semantically that's "[Learning Network] Manager". It was a way to quickly configure computer labs (see here). As that is from the XP era and hardly mentioned any more, the forum seems to have evolved into one where people talk about career progression (semantically "Learning [Network Manager]" - or "learning (how to be a) network manager"). Perhaps the forum needs updating or just merging into the "Employment" forum. @Dos_Box / @ZeroHour ?

Use Process Monitor and see what calls are failing when people try to save.

Depends what their terms of service says about things like that. I imagine it's "best efforts only" given that users don't pay, and old MP3s aren't going to be generating much ad revenue.

If it's a crappily made charger with improper separation between the high voltage and low voltage sides of the transformer you can get the LV side live at mains voltage. The low voltage (12V 2A probably?) current wouldn't have killed. I've licked those to check they're working before...

That said, migrating SQL versions isn't as scary as it may first look. Spin up another VM, install SQL 20, try the migration, go from there. If it all goes wrong, you can just keep the old server running.

Watched "Love, Death, and Robots" on Netflix - short sci-fi stories. Some were amazing ("Beyond the Aquila Rift", "Lucky 13", "Helping Hand"), others just meh - definitely worth a watch though.

ECO Printers - we use them and they work well enough. They're not display-grade printers but then they don't need to be!

You know I was just thinking about that while I went to get some tea. They're all cached by default - it's probably the huge "office@" account that's causing it (they never delete anything!). I'll suggest it and see. I was tempted to just set everyone to online via GPO as I've had bad experiences with cached mode in the past, but thought they might've improved things for 2016.

We've got an odd one - one of our receptionists seems to find that their Outlook profile corrupts and fails to load consistently (it's happened a few mornings in a row) - Outlook just hangs at "loading profile". I've deployed a script that clears the profile and restarts Outlook, which works just fine, but why might it be happening? I'm going to take a ProcMon trace the next time it happens, but is there anything else I could check? No other users have reported this - one or two have had profile issues at one time or another, but that's to be expected, it's not consistent like this one.
