Anyone seen this before? I got a cheapy mini PC from Amazon, hoping to put it in the meeting room as an instant-on PC. It booted okay first time, but after I got into the BIOS and set the boot priority to IPv4 PXE, it simply refuses to boot. I just get a black screen and nothing else. Is it just dead? Strange that a BIOS change would cause that isn't it?

We had this at a previous school - I showed the (more competent...!) teachers how to remote-kill processes with Impero, which helped a little. It also prompted a 'fork-bomb war' among the IT guys: who could come up with the most irritating infinitely replicating process. I think one of the techies won that with a batch script that filled the drive with nonsense .txt files as well as filling up the process table!

Agreed - public APIs are the way forward. The amount of custom code I had to write to extract & massage data when I was a (temporary, mind you!) Data Manager was insane.

For elimination, could you swap the access points for working ones and see if the problem follows the location or the AP?

First step would be to ask them why they want a cloud based system - cost, availability of remote access, etc? Only then can you assess the options against the criteria the school have. It may be that a cloud based system will be the best option - or, they might be missing the point entirely and it'd be a huge mistake.

Just don't bother building 'fat' images, you'll be swapping out Win 10 builds too quickly for that. Thin image, apply software with GPO / scripting / black magic.

And engineering requires money and political will ("Good news - you're getting longer trains! Bad news - your station is shut for ten weeks while we stretch it."). There are also issues with running long passenger trains as certain types of stock don't like being coupled+powered over 12 cars. I think the modern ones (e.g. Electrostars) are okay, but try linking a bunch of Networkers together in service and you get weird electrical issues. I generally think that the "rail tickets cost £££££ - capitalism sux" articles are missing the point that you genuinely can get reasonable fares by booking a short time in advance. Very very few people are going to turn up at King's Cross on the day and buy a fare to the other end of the land. However, the entire system is totally byzantine and ridiculous and needs to be rationalised. I think some sort of review has been commissioned, but Chris 'Failing' Grayling is probably about as likely to eat the report as act on it. Not sure nationalisation is a one-hit-kill silver bullet either - under BR there was little investment in stock or infrastructure (or cleaning.....), and the nationalised infrastructure manager (Network Rail) is prone to bone-headed management decisions about engineering. That said, nationalised operations done sanely could work very well - increased chances of joined-up thinking, etc. Germany does it very well with DB.

We use the new RDWeb client for remote access and people love it, I wouldn't say that MS are pushing people to VD on Azure - RDS is clearly still under active development.

Agreed - I think the only problem with this series is just bad writing. Plots that have little depth compared to the Moffat-era stories (and while I think the complexity of those was often too high, there is a middle ground), and 13 has yet to have a defining character moment (e.g. Capaldi's "Listen", Smith's "The Beast Below"). I fear that Chibnall doesn't have the sci-fi writing ability to carry the show. I'm sure he's a great writer for shows like Broadchurch, but something is lacking here. I like some of the creative decisions he's taken though, and think that Jodie is amazing. Now, where can I submit script ideas...?

This isn't quite true though, is it? As long as the data stays within the GDPR sphere of influence (basically, the EEA + UK post-Brexit) then you're good in terms of compliance.
