I would say that the Phishing Emails thread alone has provided more real-time threat intelligence on campaigns targeting schools than anywhere else. The fact that we can share intelligence safely and quickly, and then brainstorm counter-measures has probably saved multiple schools from suffering ransomware attacks or reportable data breaches. Why? If they have read-only access, they can't save any files there. Nor is being able to read them a security hole. EDIT: When I said this I assumed the standard set of files there. If you're storing anything else in the NETLOGON folder it may be worth rethinking doing so. If we understand what you're trying to achieve we can better assist.

Do a Process Monitor boot/logon trace and look for any failures? Here's a decent "case study" / war story on using it for things like this.

This is the issue I have with a couple of Always-On VPN users - they say "it doesn't work at home", but server logs show no connection attempts and it works first-time every time with my phone.

Always-On VPN is the current solution, DirectAccess has been deprecated. We use Always-On VPN and it's usually a "just works" solution. You get the odd bug but then that's to be expected. The main issue is staff forgetting to connect to their Wi-Fi/plug an Ethernet cable in at home...

We do this with Chromebits, and for simple "what's happening this week" type displays it works wonderfully.

Unlikely to work unless said users are local admins - startup script which will run in the machine context (I think!) will be better

I love how people quote Y2K as a reason not to prepare for impending issues. "Look, people freaked out about Y2K and nothing happened." Yeah, because people spent about ten years preparing for it you - fixing code that would've been affected, in some cases replacing programs wholesale. If people had ignored it, we would've had the apocalyptic scenario that was predicted. Why is critical thinking critically endangered?

It's a constant vs linear issue - there's a constant overhead to running SQL, but that overhead is cancelled out by linear gains in performance for larger installs. For smaller ones the constant overhead wipes out any benefits.

What I always did when called to help with Nova-T6 (which I knew nothing about at the start!) was to duplicate the file, try whatever unholy ritual I was going to try, see what happens. If I ended up summoning Beelzebub by mistake I just deleted my test file and started again! Can always duplicate the SIMS DB to try an import if you need to as well (I did that too).

You want: Computer Config/Admin Templates/Control Panel/Personalization/Do not display the lock screen We turn it off everywhere - can't see the point of the extra click.

VMs might get around the software/permissions issues, but this seems a very heavy workload for a booking. They should bring their own PCs if they want them so customised!

Atomwide/LGfL have multi-colour highlighters Free juice from the Microsoft stand as long as you're willing to have your body analysed by a machine learning system (it recommends a juice based on your 'mood') Definitely going to try to nab one of Adobe's pen-USB drives tomorrow!
