I've inherited a site with a smoothwall box and support is terrible! The box froze one day, LCD stops cycling through the information, rebooted it, contacted support and they said there probably won't be any logs now i've rebooted it! How do you get logs off a frozen box?! Took a week for them to reply to me saying can we arrange a support session for next week ?!?!?! So I should have waited and not have internet for 2 weeks before they tell me to reboot it?! At the other sites we used Censornet - works 100% reliable - 2 VM's for authentication load balanced/failover but all filter rules etc are cloud based. Also use for BYOD No in-line hardware box required, so removes the issues for a in-line device failing taking out the internet and site to site connections! Also inherited Lightspeed sites before with same problem - internal HDD failed causing a problem as in-line solution again. For reliability don't go for an in-line box, take WAN straight to your CORE network and clients points to a software solution hosted on a VM.

VMQ is disabled. If copy from external pc to a VM on the CSV it fluctuates all over from 10mb/s to 50mb/s. If i work on any of the VM servers they are slow with latency, whereas if move the vm virtual disk to the local host it performs well. SAN iscsi ports are using 100-200mb/s utilisation of the 1gb links. Working on servers on a SAN/Hyper-V always seem to be slower than on a physical server whether doing updates or day to day use.

I don't understand why this is a time sensitive issue? all you are doing is factory resetting the device?!

Have you upgraded to the latest firmware? there was some DHCP issues on a buggy firmware - upgrade fixed it for us.

We have a stable, fast WiFi network which all other clients have no issues connecting via Device authentication using RADIUS and NPS authentication. Putting the government netbook devices to useful use (Dell 3190) we've had problems with the WiFi on them. Driver has been updated to the latest from the site and the following issue occurs. Laptop is on the domain and logs in fine using Ethernet. However, I then connect the the device to the WiFi SSID, it connects straight away but comes up as 'unidentified network' and a 169.x.x.x address. Patiently waiting between 5 minutes or even an hour or more on one today when it says this, the connection eventually turns to Domain and receives a proper IP address on the network just by leaving the network and connections screen open. As soon as I click connect on the SSID, it registers on the NPS server and says granted access to a user, with the name of the device. In Unify management it shows the device being connected to the AP with the 169.x.x.x address and then eventually when it decides to connect, changes to the proper network address and can login. Any other device (non Dell) that we connect to the same WiFi network connects and gets the proper dhcp address immediately, so definitely something with the dells. Not a fan of Dell as we have issues with the first Dell Laptops we had back in 2003, where even a Dell engineer came to site and couldn't work out what the issue was.

I'm trying to reinstall DPM on a server and having a catch! When I run the setup wizard and enter the local SQL server name it goes through the install until it errors out with DPM Setup failed to add a user to the local group. Review the error details, take the appropriate action, and then run DPM Setup again.ID: 4323. Details: A member could not be added to or removed from the local group because the member does not exist On Microsofts website it details creating the MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct account and then install should complete successfully. So I create the accounts, change the SQL server and SQL agent service to use this account and restart the service (this works ok) Then when i try and reinstall DPM, after entering the SQL instance it says that SQL server must run as system account and not the MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct account. So for the install it needs SQL to be running as system, but the rest of the install needs it running as the DPM account? Any ideas?! DPM Is so over-engineered!

We are a MAT with 3 sites running SIMS, each school has a local database and i've got the drop-down connection box on each machine so the users can login to whichever site they need to, and even run multiple copies of SIMS side by side on the machine. Off-site access is provided by remoteAPP.

Good Luck - mobile devices are a management headache here - we check them every holiday for chargers missing, not in the right slots, not up the right way, devices missing, keys missing off the keyboard. we've tried signing in and out systems, getting them to turn the trolleys off and on, if on timers, they remove them, and all sorts. Its a shame they don't look after them as its us that then get complained at when they don't work properly!

I have inherited a DPM backup system which has been backing up some Hyper-V VMs successfully. I've tried to add some new VMs into the protection group but have an issue. When I initially add the VM on the replica host, the protection status goes to 'OK' and green. After a while, or if i preform a backup or run a consistency check, it will come up as failed - Replica is inconsitent If i try and re-run the consistency check, it says inconsistent still and I get the following error: Type: Consistency checkStatus: FailedDescription: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B)) The infrastructure consists of Hyper-V server, with DPM selecting the VMs from the Replica Server A replication check between the primary and replica server are all green and ok. Please could anyone help ? A windowsimagebackup directly from the VM server successfully completes. The VMs which are currently working ok were added before my time.

I have inherited a network setup by an external company consisting of: 1 x Windows Based SAN with 4 x onboard NICs all teamed within Windows, 2 x SAN Switches 2 x Hyper-V hosts, with VMs on both Hosts using CSV storage on the windows SAN. - 4 x NICs connected to the SAN switches, (2 each per host) and 4 NICs teamed to the main network side. When logging into any of the VMs or performing any management tasks, the performance is so slow in comparison to dedicated SANs i have worked on in the past and normal standalone Hyper-V setups. How do i determine what the issue is? The Windows SAN has 2 x SSDs for host OS and a RAID 10 which is running the Storage Volume for the CSV. If i copy an iso from the Hyper-V host to the data drive on the SAN i get consistent 110+ MB/s transfer speed, however if i copy it to one of the VMs on the cluster storage I get below 40MB/s copy speed and occasionally will stall and drop to 0MB/s. I'm not sure that something is correctly configured, including MPIO to use all available paths.

As part of a project, I am wanting to migrate all servers from Vmware over to Hyper-V. I used Starwinds free conversion software which all went through smoothly and no issues at all. However, when i went to first boot the VM it stuck at Starting (10%) for ages and then it finally booted. If I do a reboot of the VM it shuts down, gets stuck at 'stopping' then again eventually reboots without an issue. However, any VMs which have been created from a fresh install on the Hyper-V host, they start/stop immediately. What would be causing these delays on a converted VM? Thanks.

We use Veam backup for disk to disk and then disk to cloud using PeaSoup!

Check SQL Services Configuration Manager for what ports SQL server is using and allow those through. If using Dynamic ports, allow the sqlservice

Having inherited an old network, i'm removing the oldest DC running windows server 2008 R2! New 2016 DC's have already been setup and all dns/dhcp roles etc have been migrated. However, I cannot DCPROMO the 2008 r2 server as it is running AD CS. I'm aware that a direct migration of AD CS cannot happy from 2008 r2 to 2016 due to changes, however I've looked within Certification Authority on the server and the only certificates that haven't expired are those of the existing Domain controllers. Whats the best way moving forward with this so i can demote the 2008 R2? Is there a best step by step guide link someone could supply please? Do I assume it is safe to just remove/delete the CA from 2008 r2 and setup a new CA on the 2016 AD Server as the new root? There are a few certificate with usernames against them for BASIC EFS (EFS) but they have all got expired dates, and nothing else if using the certification authority. Or is there a more preferred way/steps of doing this? Thanks.
