@JMB: What camera's cost when bought doesn't constitute justification for repairing them as I have found out from past experiences, it is far better to replace as it will probably cost far less than repairing, HD recording is so cheap these days if research is done prior to purchasing. One should not have to spend a small fortune to aquire a camera which will deliver the same quality you have been used to for a fraction of the cost. Good hunting

@sparkeh: It was a legacy from @webman, his interpretation was it's ease of use and it's simplicity in setting up but also it's versatility in being just right for the job and as you can see our ethics of no more than 2 clicks on any page for the information you require really works a treat don't you think, Nothing worse than having to search for everything and not finding them!

@Danp: Do you use PXE build or do you use disks/USBpendrives? I suspect it could be to do with driver issues due to the fact that you can still build your RM workstations as you have stated, I have never put the driver packs on as we use our own drivers and import them in via the MMC. My Bad: have just read the posts previously and someone has already asked these questions.

@SimpleSi: How are your switche ports set up? Auto negotiate? Do your switches have STP configured on all your ports? Some nics cannot sync sometimes with some switches with certain configurations and this can cause conflicts whereupon the switch ports actually shutdown or the nics slow down to virtually no speed throughput at all. If as you say a curriculum machine is showing signs of this also it could be a switch port config problem? Another theory is that all those 28 machines have the same batch of nics in and they could be from a bad batch of manufacture, only way to tell is to install another nic of a different manufacture. @sluggster66: I wouldn't touch anything at all prior to the staff coming in as this could void your warranty with the company who have done the install and hence why I offered the advice I did, Its alright for others to give what seems as good advice in terms of what to do to pinpoint the problem but they are not you and they are not having to suffer the consequences should any of their advice goes wrong for you. Advice is said to be free but not in your case as it could cost your school and you severely, should it all go badly, the company can and will shift the blame if they can. Yes there is! Ring up the company who did the install as it seems they didn't do such a great job after all! I take it you have not paid them yet and you did get a period of time before you signed the job off? Is the head of IT a technical person or a teacher? If its a teacher then I wouldn't let them anywhere near as they could do more damage, get the company who did the install to sort it all out under the terms of the warranty of install. Good luck

Having to do the same here for rebuilds, before I can rebuild a workstation which is a Sims machine I have to first remove the workstation from the Solus 3 Gui and then once the workstation has rebuilt add it to the deployment group. As we have approx 150 sims workstations this can be a pain especially when we have just rebuilt the whole school. I do hope that something can be done as the last 2 weeks has been a nightmare, slowly working my way through it but it seems that Solus 3 is still a little flakey. Workstation Solus agents keep stopping randomly (odd ones not all) but this can be a pain. Anyway hopefully it will get better as time goes on like Sims hehe!

Can we lock this thread now please as it's already doing me head in!!! Just joking but would like to state 3 months as the lock out term for non technical threads.

You are right in that Solus3 is getting productively better and that the guy's n gal's over at Capita are doing their level best to make the product more reliable. @FN-GM: l too am looking at enforcing password change every 30 days and the length of password to be at least 10 characters (numbers and letters only) but as for the Sims I have consulted with SLT team and we are of the same mind as to not use the AD integration tool for Sims as we feel staff are comfortable setting their own password for this which could be the same as their network password but of course this will be up to them if they want to change it every 30 days. Keeping the Sims login seperate from the network login is in our case a much better proposal for our school, I am sure that a program developer can write a sims shortcut app which will function via the AD to check if the username and password match and then prompt for a password to be entered before access to Sims, this is probably the way I would work it.

@morphears: This might sound stupid but since you have a primary HDD now running windows 7 why not copy those install files over the top of your other windows install which is not working, nothing to lose as you will still have access to your other files to copy back over if this doesn't work, you may find that could fix it? You may have already tried this but then again you might not have!

You might as well give the password to the students as give it to the teacher as without a doubt the students will get to know it, either the teacher will give it out without thinking or a student will see the teacher putting it in. Telling a baby not to cry would be easier.

@matt40k: I have ran it like this for as long as I can remember and have had no problems whatsoever, this was the information given to me by Capita through our LA MIS team to which I have the original documentation. This has been commented on before and as far as I am aware quite a few people use this config. Unless someone from Capita tells me otherwise then I will carry on using this config.

@yjb: It could be the lockdir permissions, as you have stated it works for the admin user, it will probably be the BDE config that requires changing on each workstation that has FMS running on it. This requires a central folder to which the users have the appropriate permissions creating on the Sims server called "lockdir" then, on each workstation which you intend to run FMS from, go on as local admin and configure the BDE from the administration console, you will find this at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\Bde\bdeadmin.exe This will open up the console window, in here under the configuration tab click the plus next to Drivers then again for he Native and then click on the Paradox, in the right hand side you will see NET DIR, point this to the folder called lockdir on the server which you created earlier. Then click the plus next to System and click INIT, in the right hand side you shouldsee LOCAL SHARE and a value of False, change this to true and then close the window, save config if asked and then try FMS. Good luck and don't forget also that FMS requires a default printer attached to each machine it is run from.
