I for one think what everyone on this topic is forgetting, it doesn't matter if we become certified and recognised by the empowered body, as long as the teaching body in education feel threatened by any other professionals within their domain we will never be treat as equals in their eyes. I have been trying for years to establish the fact that there is indeed a two tiered system which we are all aware of except the people who matter. As far as education is concerned there is only one professional body within its domain and that is of the "Teaching fraternity" we are as stated in our contracts "Support Staff" or worse still in some counties "Non-Teaching staff", if this doesn't explain the situation then we are blind to the facts. Governement along with the LA's have no concept of IT professionals nor do they wish to as it is more expense to add to each schools dwindling budget. I am not in any way damning what has been brought up on this thread but realistically it could just be pie in the sky thinking. Apologies if this offends anyone on here but it is not meant as a put down of any sort just a realisation that after my 10 years in the education business........nothing has changed in fact it has got worse.

Why do you think that? Most of what a child learns is from home, from parents and technology (web, social networking etc) Soft skills they will already have its the static and outdated curriculum that stifles a childs creativity and this has been proven by a academic technologist in India. The teaching of the core subjects have not changed for nigh on a 100 years, students sat in front of a teacher spouting the same boring stuff sending them to sleep then asking them to memorise and regurgitate when exams come round. Teachers (Don't want to be cynical) are just highly paid baby sitters, some of which are in the job for the holidays and the good remuneration (I wouldn't want to be one as they also take a lot of s**t from the students). Trends don't change in education i see the same lessons taught as they were to me over 30 years ago. Time for change me thinks and remember you heard it from me first hehe!

Just my pennies worth but I actually thought about going down this route but having thought it through decisded against it for the reasons that have been explained on here by quite a few people. One of the main reasons is that the whole dynamics of schools is changing, certainly the mood is of BYOD which eventually will expand, with the advent of the cloud storage and apps I doubt very much that schools want the burden of the ever increasing costs for new hardware every 3 or 5 years which adds so much to the budget of the school. The development of increasing wireless technology protocols means that large files can be transfered over huge distance in the blinking of an eye so why have storage in the school with the added factor of DRP to worry about should anything happen to the school. I feel that soon schools will become a thing of the past and students will learn from home, what would be the point in spending all this money on buildings, heating and lighting to turn out students who don't even have the skills required by the companies that want to employ them. For now I would go for a virtual solution using whichever hypervisor you decide for the good of the school and fat or thin clients and laptops on a good wired/wireless network. The reasoning behind this is that in the future if you do decide to move to the cloud you can migrate your whole network into some third party cloud solution and have done with it hehe! Hi Chris, Do you have access to the RM Knowledgebase? I have found this: TEC1476974 When you try to connect what error message besides the first post do you get? It seems like an aunthentication error to me in the logs you have provided in your first post. Have you tried to restart the IIS?

I feel that teachers are given too many roles to which having an industry background is a major criteria, they just cannot accept that there are other professionals who could manage the job so much more effectively, I have recently been challenged by a teaching colleague about Academies employing industry professionals to head them rather than teaching professionals. This really got their goat when I said that I too would see no reason why a professional other than a teacher should be given the Headship of a school as this role is more about man management than teaching. As for the amount of assistant headteachers well I feel that this has got right out of hand also in that these jobs should also go to non teaching professionals and let the teachers teach instead of juggling too many balls at once. Surely the teaching side suffers when they also have to do another role to fulfil which usually has nothing to do with teaching rather more like data crunching for the different subjects, surely one person could do all the data crunching within the school for all the departments instead of giving the teachers more pay through different roles. I also feel strongly about the way in which this is done throughout all schools in that teachers given more responsibility through management roles actually have contact time taken off them which equates to the amount of time it is deemed taken to fulfil the other role. In effect they are just doing the same amount of workload but getting more pay in the process. If support staff are given another role or responsiblilties they cannot drop their other jobs so in effect have more workload to boot and often don't get the remuneration for it in the way a teaching professional would. It is time for the double standards within education to stop and everyone paid a fair days pay for a fair days work.

I agree with @GrumbleDook on the accountability side of things which with the proper guidance and training can be advantageous but with some of the beaurocracy it beggars belief when in essence it just creates more work which in turn creates more stress when the whole thing could be managed in a much better way. Not all events can be monitored in the same way as work which can be scheduled by way of timetabled events throughout the year. With education changing so frequently and technology advancing in a much quicker vain the only thing that slows it down is us humans in the way we have to adapt by way of learning new ideals and technology and then delivering them to students in a way that they will absorb that knowledge. Teaching seems for quite a while to have been stuck in a timewarp in the way it was delivered but gradually this has been acknowledged and slowly other means of teaching have become apparent through the use of technology, could it be that this government are looking for a way to determine that fact and realise that it is time to change the way we teach? Very thought provoking I realise especially when things are happening in the background which re-enforce how the education of students has slowly been directed to private industry to take charge by way of new buildings and the way in which teaching and learning is delivered. I feel that students are evolving very quickly and are so very much aligned to digital learning using more than one media in which to access this, are we to see the gradual decline in teachers to such a point that schools will become a thing of the past and that students will learn from home? Lots of private companies are lining up waiting for the opportunity to provide services to which they can gleen profits from and use whatever means necessary to achieve the figures that the government want by way of exam passes and the like. Just listening to the news and watching different media programs it is quite plain what is on the governments minds. With the way cloud media has evolved it is only a matter of time before one of these large corporations takes a hold of the educational sector and turns it into another business which creates profit instead of a constant drain on the government coffers. Change is just around the corner, how we as the people who have delivered this for so long adapt to the new ways of education is up to us but I feel a lot of changes will happen shortly and not always in a good way. This is just a stab at what seems to be happening throughout the country, not just in the educational system but in every public service accross the land. @flyinghaggis: We have a dedicated 10Mb leased line from BT for approx £8k per annum on a 100Mb bearer which includes Cisco router and firewall. If you ask they will setup all the config you will need to connect the 2 sites together. Give them a ring

@nickbro: We have 35 HP 100E netbooks which we have replaced the standard drive and 1GB RAM with a 64GB SSD drives and 2GB RAM on CC4.2, will check our bootup times and logon times and report back tomorrow.

@Rozzer: If you thinking of future proofing you could also take a look at this:UEFI - Home This is what I would be looking at if I was purchasing new clients, this along with Windows 8 will keep the boot process down to a couple of seconds instead of 1 minute plus depending on your hardware. This plus 64 bit clients is what I will be looking at for the forseeable future along with new server OS, the future with Microsoft looks bright........very bright indeed.
