Australian schools have a simple uniform. School branded polo t-shirt, jumper and shorts (some schools). They wear generic trousers in the winter. They are free to wear any shoes they like. The kids looks smart and there are no uniform dramas like in the UK. The teachers aren’t constantly battling to have shirts tucked in etc. Win win IMO.

Thanks for the feedback. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue. We literally have thousands of cameras at work (good system but too much for home use) and got a couple of connections that can help.

Morning, I have noticed a few posts about CCTV recently, but I am looking for home use so thought I would create a fresh due to being able to be a little more free with what I can do. I am looking for something that meets these requirements Hard wired cameras using CAT6, using POE No wireless cameras Cameras not powered externally must be powered using POE Local recording Ideally a recorder is provided by the manufacturer, something that doesn't need a seperate PC to be built. Rack Mounted preferred Good cameras with good pictures in the dark Easy to use as my partner will be using this as well Apple TV App Mobile app that allows you to view footage outside of the house with no port forwarding Does not require a cloud service to operate, I don't want a bricked system if the manufacturer closes shop. I understand some features might be lost. Nice to have: integrates with Home Assistant I was thinking Unifi as it seems to meet all these requirements - I think we have some users here. What are your thoughts? Open to other suggestions as well! Thanks

I totally get it. I have a few smart home things and don’t want to be tied into 1 vendor, don’t want to be dependent on the cloud and keep it simple. Hard to keep all that in check. That is generally why i avoid smart stuff if I can.

I wouldn't use fast.com. I have found it to be unreliable on anything about 100 megabit. Try speedtest.net I would test with a laptop connected directly to your router with a public IP. Bypassing switches firewall etc. If it's ok you know it's on your side. Next I would look at PFsense. What is the spec like? Could it be features such as IPS and IDS causing it? Connect directly to the PFsense bypassing switches etc and see the speed there. Next move onto the switched network. Use Open Speed Test to test network traffic internally.

You would connect the main switch (not sure of the actual name) in parallel or replace the motion sensor. You don't have to be physically touching it and it can be hidden away. It would work exactly like that, place them anywhere. You don't nee a battery and you don't need to hard wire them in. It is worth watching this video to understand them, they are designed for the situation you face. The issue you will have with your current setup, you will need to modify that sensor as it will cut power to your smart bulbs and they won't work.

I think you can yes. If you want to skip out all the smart home stuff, it’s worth looking at Quinetic switches. They are wireless switches that link directly back to main switch. The best thing is they don’t need batteries. They are powered by kinetic energy.

This isn’t specific to this model of AP. Just a general observation with POE. Maybe POE devices use LLDP to determine the required power consumption. When it’s disabled it can be inaccurate. I have seen POE phones reboot when they rang due to not having enough power. Enabling LLDP fixed it.

Try with a Linux live boot. Might not be as fussy as windows.

You should only need the internet at the main site. The wireless link is essentially a long Ethernet cable.

This should work. Even if you don’t touch the configuration on the first half it will still be in a VLAN, it will just be defaults. This is usually VLAN ID 1. Yes - but you need to configure the router to work with your VLANS.

We have 26 IT staff 2 domain admins. They can only login to domain controllers and nothing else. MFA protected. A number of accounts with elevated access to specific sections and functions of Active Directory, file shares etc. They cannot log into workstations. MFA protected. Standard user accounts for day to day. Nobody at all is a Local Admin. All apps are installed via SCCM / Intune (migrating at the moment). If someone needs a local admin we use LAPS. This has to be approved someone who is a one of the domains admins. It has to be a very good reason and logged. Password is automatically reset the day after. It’s not even a weekly occurrence that a LAPS password is used. The security team also provide OTP codes for any executables. Yes having 3 accounts and using LAPS is a pain. A cyber attack would be worse.

2 on 1 host won’t help with hardware redundancy but will help if something happens to the guest operating system.

Something to note, this will hit the CPU on the machine processing the conversation. If you have something with an Intel Quick Sync it will handle it much better.
