What features do you require? It’s hard to recommend a product when we are not sure what you’re looking for.

How do you mean connect to the server? Is it hosting an application? RDP? File share? Printers? Etc

But they should be. There should be some basic QA checks behind it as they are are working with the school. For example checking the proof pictures of the rights class are going out to the right parents. If the company made this call, the school they would have picked this and should have acted.

And surely the school would have done some kind of vetting / checks before going out to parents?

How did the school let this happen?

The resale value was always an estimate, but I started by looking at our own fleet, comparing what I could get for it used and how much was originally paid. I also consulted resellers etc. I didn’t do this as it just created extra work. Everything we had was in warranty so if something failed it would be repaired. We kept spares of each model (due to the refresh period we only had a few models of laptops and desktops) and swapped with the same type if needed.

I calculated the purchase price of a device and the resale value after x amount of service. From this I could calculate a monthly cost and evidence keeping a young fleet and selling the devices is cost effective and people benefit from modern devices. I also included stats from the service desk incidents to evidence reliability. Although, these days there aren’t as many as there used to be, devices are much more reliable. Generally my lifecycle is (and was in schools) 3 years for portable devices and 5 for fixed computers. The manufacturer of the device influenced the resale value greatly. I also did this with switches, servers etc.

It depends on where the OP is from. Many other countries it is not the norm like it is in the UK.

For my experience (in Australia) most people use their own routers and not a provider device. My father in law just switched providers and he is in his 70s. Just changed the username and password on the PPPOE setting and that was it. Might be what is seen as normal in the UK.

Agreed, that's pretty average. I would just use a standard RJ11 SIP ATA type device and then I can connect anything I like.

If you have your own router, you don't change anything - this then fits your analogy. You don't have to change anything, but you're choosing to? Unless I have misunderstood?

It’s not really what you asked but I am curious if you can use your own router instead? If not it’s a poor move on their part!

What is it you're migrating to the cloud?

We host equipment in a dedicated data centre and they provide these. I was racking equipment on Friday, servers are much lighter these days so didn't find myself needing to use it.

One is Enterprise grade, the other isn't. If you can survive without features such as VRRP, stacking, routing protocols etc go for it.

I can’t see why you would block it. Teach the students of the use it properly. If you block it they will just use it to cheat from home. Do you block Wikipedia as the kids could just copy and paste content from there?

What does the topology look like? Are these disabled links going back to the core or going between other switches? One problem with Unifi is they don’t support stacking. So if you have multiple at the core they can’t be tested as one. You you have to use STP and have disabled links.

The new names are certainly a little more interesting and creative! Liberty Line sounds very American to me. Not something I associate with London.
