The end of support date was published before they were purchased… you can’t really complain here, anything beyond that date is a bonus. During this time you’re running the risk of security issues or the device’s ceasing to function. Thankfully it was the latter.

They shouldn’t have been bought them in the first place if the school isn’t prepared to accept they will be end of support on the date widely published.

Have you tried loading Cloadready on these devices? Might be a way to get an updated OS on them.

DHCP starvation attack. Your wifi solution should have protection for this, it varies by vendor. Physical switch ports are easier to protect, simply limit the number of MAC addresses on a port (2 maybe) using port security. Anything port and it will shutdown.

I was thinking the same thing. Security is super important. Not to mention the risk of things suddenly stopping working and disrupting teaching and learning.

Do not change the password it isn’t good practice to do this in the first place and it will be leaked again. Change to 802.1x this way there is no password to leak. In the short term, what WIFI solution do you use? Can you put a policy in place to only allow ChromeOS devices to connect? Maybe restrict it so only approved MAC addresses are allowed? I know these aren’t security measures but should bring the system to a stable state.

You can achieve all that with separation. I can’t think of any good all in one firewall and filtering solution. For that alone they should be separate components.

We have quite a large farm. We ended up replacing all our hardware with appliances (VXrail) that are on the old model. This saved us nearly $1,000,000 in licensing over 5 years. Managed to get the order in a days before they killed that avenue. We aren't going to leave yet, due to specialist software not supporting other hypervisors (yet).

We have fibre installed at my old job (not the UK). They managed to get around 500 meters without trenching they had a machine that essential pushed a rod through the soil the push it away and pulled through conduit behind it. They did need a small hole at either end of the run though.

I have noticed that some devices have started to come through with random default passwords. Mikrotik equipment for example.

I would consider expanding the scope to a power outage. Many valid suggestions here for an internet outage wouldn’t be possible if the power is off.
