Oh good I had that at school - BANG - pain in my arm nurse - oh - well that didn't work BANG - same again - thanks for the warning And then - for a few months - 2 holes in my arm - quite narrow and deep - that my Dad had to pour powder into twice a day to try to control the infection/reaction - or something apparently - if my Dad didn't have a surgery in the house (he was a Chiropodist) I would have had to go to the doctor before and after school every day! Hope I don't have to do THAT again!!!! Still - pain in arm v. global pandemic causing many many deaths

Now that makes perfect sense - it was probably checked by my wife - or her sister My wife has a tendency to do 2 rather 'difficult' things when giving directions a) get left and right mixed up b) point -with her hand in front of her so - when we need to turn left at a junction - she has been known - many times to point to her left with her right hand in front of her when I am - as I am driving - looking forward and say 'go right' which can be confusing the best directions - not unique - are when you come to a junction (normally at a roundabout) and she says Down or Up her sister does the same which is also confusing (in case you are wondering what on Earth (or any other known planet) they are thinking it is the first word of an instruction saying' down that one' - up that one' but they only get the first word out then stop which is rather difficult to interpret at times) so - basically - that sign makes sense to me - I am used to the concept

What about one of those where you have abttery powered door bell on the door then those plug in devices that ring when the bell is pressed we have one at home with 2 sounders but I'm sure they are available with 4-5 all you need is a mains socket - and a building that allows the signal to get through (which may be a problems???)

Bit of a necrobump but I only just spotted this thread imagine if the handle was a bit - errr - difficult - and you had to jiggle it a bit to get it to open just how wrong would that feel???

Last time I spoke to someone who did electrical safety inspection they said that temporary setups were fine as long as they were safe in all manners - including trip hazards etc there could be a problem if a temporary setup was really a permanent setup with no attention to overall loading and the use of correct fuses so extensions and such are fine as long as it is electrically safe and it does look like this requirement is basically temporary but some or all of it may be needed again at some unknown point in the future As far as I know this would be OK to use proper extensions - with fuses and surge protection etc I am pretty sure I saw someone on here saying the same sort of thing clearly the use of one 4 way socket plugged into another 4 way socket - leading to a 10 way extension - with all plugs in use - is seriously dodgy and would rightly lead to problems with any inspection as would (and this is not commonly known amongst the general population) a long cable coiled up and running several devices Anyone on here that is qualified to give proper facts and links - I am just going off what I have been told????? (as an extra - last time 'my room' at my last school was inspected it was declared a major H&S risk due to several long extension cables being coiled up together creating a major fire risk it had been inspected through the window - the site manager said he couldn't find the key and no-one had thought to do it when I was available which was a bit dumb as they were not in use and that was simply the shelf where they were stored he had no complaints about the 10 way tower which was mostly in use!)

If they are to be used mostly at home then presumably this is just a temporary thing that you need for now Hence something messy but functional would be OK Then have the bits available for other uses afterwards On that basis I would go for several small things - then redistribute them for other uses afterwards (phone charging for the IT team comes to mind!!!) BTW - how many devices do you need to charge at the moment?

I doubt it is pre 2007 - but I could be wrong and this mis represents the actual problem - it makes it sound as is the problem is that the IT dept. are carp for deploying out of date (by > 13 years) software and forcing user to use it Whereas the actual problem isdown to how the system was designed and put together which is a totally different area and a very familiar situation

TBH I wouldn't be surprised if it was done in QB45 or - worse still Basic on Level6 MOD400 (you had to be there - just be glad you were not) although that may not be fair sounds like a system that was designed to comply with a timescale - rather than a system that was designed based on requirements and the time scale based on that Almost like there was no other alternative

It looks like the actual system runs on something more reasonable They seem to have exported it for sending to the tracing and for publishing stats and at some point round there it was put into a spreadsheet - using an XLS file not XLSX which is where the problem lies i.e. a system that may - or may not - work perfectly well with an export and send system that was thought out by 'Fred - who knows about computers' basically a transfer system that uses designs that should have gone out of the door in the 1980s when proper networks started - implemented by someone who thinks they know what they are doing

Yup - business IT can be like that someone comes up with a wonderful way to create this great new system much much quicker because IT say it will take 6 months to do it so it gets implemented by Fred (who knows computers) in 3 weeks then IT have to drop everything to actually get the data to do something and change the system to make it actually do something useful then support a system held together with chewing gum and string for the next 5 years and all the time getting told how wonderful it is that such a wonderful systems could be implemented in 3 weeks - and how great Fred is and how he is working on something else now - $deity knows what but you know you will find out - normally via a phone call 5 minutes before home time on a Friday Basically just like a school but with bigger budgets - but bigger systems

Dunno about others - but if I was walking around with a VeryPC shirt/jumper etc etc then I would worry that people doubted my impartiality socks I can get away with I did work in one place (in business) where this would have been disallowed because we ordered a lot of stuff and had to be seen to be totally unbiased even accepting a diary from a supplier had to be logged (well - supposed to be logged - not sure we always remembered!)

My wife used to work in a hospital - clinical audit dept They spent most of their time analysing data and presenting the findings in order to improve the way things worked she was one of the few in the whole places that used Access - nearly every doctor would use Excel for everything

I think people on here are shcoked by this because they maybe think this sort of thing only happens in schools really - this is just because of people especially educated people - possibly with degrees - that think they know what they are doing and know about IT and are fed up with experts (remember that???) OK - some of them are teachers but - heads up people - they are EVERYWHERE

the article says it could only handle 65000 rows - not columns - which would be even more worrying so basically someone who doesn't know how to do the job and a file transfer system that has no controls this is similar to when you get a system set up by the Head of Science - who 'knows computers' we have all had one of them
