  1. OK - speed tests have consistently shown over 100M for the last few hours magically starting half an hour or so after I called them so - I have a theory Whatever the person I spoke to meant by referring it to OFCOM - it was founded in something real and he followed it through but as it was directed to OFCOM it got the attention of someone higher up who then investigated and someone fixed something at which point my speed suddenly improved As I say - it is only a theory - based on a single fact and a dogy timeline but it is still a possibility
  2. TBF to Virgin they have been brilliant over the last 5 or more years It is only recently that they seem to have gone downhill don't even mention BT to me - last time I dealt with them it took them over 3 months to admit my house existed (literally - they claimed that my house didn't exists - they were fine with numbers 1,3,4,5,6 etc etc but believed that 2 didn't exist!!) when there was a BT box nailed to the outside wall that they had installed a few weeks before - it was a new house and BT set up all the stuff before they were sold. Only managed to get them to connect it when the builders brought it up through their contact that arranged the installation!! when the engineer actually finally turned up he said it was already done - it just needed a 1 minute activation remotely You know then kids and/or parents ask the IT tech at school about their IT problems - the vast majority over the last 10 years have been BT obviously when I started in schools it was AOL - but that was another story
  3. Further info tested the speed - through 3 different sites - several times since the phone call to virgin - consistent around 30-40 M Just typed in the above moan etc just tested again - just over 100M weird - makes me wonder if someone actually did something from Virgin???
  4. Hi all looking for some information about computers, broadband and networky stuff at home - thought there may be someone on here that could help:rolleyes: Just had a nice friendly discussion with Virgin about our broadband speed - I thought 3M was a bit on the slow side as we pay for 100M Anyway - after going through their helpful fault fixing on line system - which, to my amazement, made no difference at all - I rang them as there is not way of actually saying you have a problem without doing this I was only waiting for 25 minutes to get an answer (Note - I used to work on the systems for a major call centre - the phones HAD to be answered within 5 rings at the time!!!!) Anyway - went through all the normal carp - tested over wireless (5GHz - which he interpreted as 5G mobile so we had to talk about that) and wired - funnily enough that made no difference - as always Reset the box - and restarted it twice - once after he 'sent a renew signal to the hub' speed has increased to 30M at times - but still slow ANYWAY - to the point He said that he has 'done he can from their end' so he is going to refer it as a complaint to OFCOM Whut?? not heard of that before but he was very insistent that the minimum that I should ever see is 54M - and as it is below that then OFCOM will investigate and ........ Has anyone else heard of this?? was he talking ********?? was he just plain lying - I have had absolute lies from Virgin earlier this year - they seem to have a series of problems and get desperate at times?? any ideas??
  5. https://metro.co.uk/2020/05/01/mum-drinks-sperm-smoothies-fight-off-coronavirus-12639469/ the total carp that social media can generate is a never ending source of what's the word?? amazement? frustration? horror? consternation? anyway - there you go expecting a phone call sister-in-law any minute saying she believes in it
  6. Hmmm sooo many comments occur to me probably best I keep them to myself or.........
  7. Dunno how typical this area is but I always see people in Tesco who don't have a mask - but very few. A low enough number to be people with genuine reasons - maybe Although I do sometimes see one or two that seem to have a sort of smug smile on their face as they walk around maskless - so these MAY be just deniers Personally I hate wearing a mask - makes me feel cut off from other people and sort of lonely but whatever - I do it anyway Sister-in-law got a lesson in science and reliable sources a few days ago when she mentioned to her sister (my wife) that she thinks masks are unhealthy because you are breathing in your own carbon dioxide and some other dumb stuff source - her daughter on Facebook - that well know reliable source of information this happens quite often - a few months ago all Heinz Beans tins contain worms - apparently it was 'all over Facebook'
  8. It would help if they make the policy say that everyone has to either wear a mask - or a badge/lanyard showing a pass confirming that they do not need to wear one otherwise some kids will claim they are exempt and see if they can get away with it What happens if some entitled parents claim their darling gets very anxious when wearing a mask so is exempt would this count?? I presume it would??? I also presume it could snowball
  9. just to be clear - that was deliberate other times I use the; instead of the ' - not so much - which (see what I did there) some people have commented on
  10. As far as school busses are concerned - how does the driver enforce it OK - they can refuse entry to anyone who is not wearing a mask - but what do they do after they start driving and someone's little darling takes their mask off followed by all their mates do they stop and refuse to continue until they all have their masks on? Who is responsible for checking this hasn't happened? What sanctions can be put in place? How does the driver recognise who it was? Seems like one of those regulations where it will work just fine in nice schools where the kids behave and the parents are committed to education I taught/teched in one like that for a couple of years Since then I have taught/teched in school at the other end of the scale Seems to me that people who come up with this stuff only consider the former type of school and not the latter
  11. No - seems reasonable - call it a u-turn if the message changes - no matter what the reason Still think any school will have problem with masks - 'mask shaming' will become 'a thing' kids will find it 'may cause spots' and refuse to wear them - parents will insist that the school ensures 'little Mary' wears her mask at all times but the little darling takes ot off as soon as the parents fly off in their helicopter - but it is the school's fault no matter what little Jonny came home without his mask - school should have made sure he had one after some unidentified 'bully' STOLE his mask - actually he took it off in reg and forgot it so the teacher put it in the bin (quite correctly) etc etc etc sometimes I wonder if people ever went to a school I mean - my school was hardly typical - but this would still be a difficult call even there!!! The schools I have worked in would be impossible!
  12. Once the schools reopen they will be relabelled 'Teacher recovery Aids'

  19. currently reading the whole 'Wheel of Time' by Robert Jordan - all in one massive DOC file - currently at 18% and 135 hours left to read according to Kindle but this seems like a wide ranging book to try next
  20. I think it comprises of just about everyone judging by the comments at times!! p.s. apologies to anyone annoyed by stuff I really do check and correct a lot of mistakes you should see some of the first drafts!!!!
  21. 2 points - around exam time there are always loads of stories about those kids that get totally stressed by exams and hence do really badly - or just can;t do them Those kids must be massively relieved second point if it wasn;t for all this fuss about predicted grades v moderation etc then journalists would have been looking for school where the teachers had estimated higher grades than they normally get - especially if they could find 'posh' or 'independant' school that may be trying to fiddle it Basically there is no perfect system to sort this and any system they use will have caused problems I'm just glad I'm not a teacher (anymore) that has to work out fair and impartial marks for the students It is far more complicated than it sounds!!!
  22. Shhhhhh - don;t put the new people off just as they register - let them discover 'the other stuff' later!!! (and don;t mention the punny thread or Dad Jokes thread for a while either!!!) Seriously - Welcome all new people!!
